I can't wait. Series 1 was absolutely delightful - I'm so looking forward to it and I seem to have developped a crush on Samuel West.

Yes, she's perfect for that role. Those last minutes tonight on the roof had me in tears.

LubaLuca · 30/09/2021 22:27

This is our Sunday night harmless viewing. It is pure loveliness.

A kiss at last! Smile
woodhill · 01/10/2021 11:23

Loving this series especially Tricky and liked the roof moment. It's all so charming

JaneJeffer · 01/10/2021 11:27

I wonder if Amy Nuttall's character is going to be a regular. I want to know how she gets on.

I loved Mrs Pumphries' gardener in the original series, I think he was called Hodges. He hated the dog but had to walk it and look after it. The actor playing Hodges got the part spot on as per the books, but also added a lot to the character too.

Maireas · 03/10/2021 09:07

The last scene was lovely.

Robin233 · 03/10/2021 20:21

Saving Thursdays episode for tonight.
I loved the films. I loved the books. And I loved the first series so was a bit dubious of the new series but it's perfect. They were right ti do it.
They got the characters just right.
(Poldark is another 'reboot' that worked well too)

Maireas · 03/10/2021 20:27

I agree about Poldark. That remake was excellent.

rosy71 · 03/10/2021 21:14

How is Tristan supposed to ever qualify as a vet if he doesn’t know he failed? Did he not notice that he didn’t have a graduation ceremony? This is an utterly ridiculous storyline.

I am loving it but totally agree with this. Surely at some point Siegfried will need to tell him?

Maireas · 03/10/2021 22:46

I want Mrs Hall to come and look after me.

Bipbopbee · 03/10/2021 22:58

Absolutely love it. Helen is so beautiful with her dimples and straightforward way and I want to live in Skeldale House with Mrs Hall Grin

Disappointed with the "first date" at the Renistone. Nothing at all like the disaster story in the book. It was a complete damp squib, and completely pointless without everything going wrong for Jim.

In the old series he forgot his wallet I think?
Clawdy · 04/10/2021 12:02

And there was a hilarious description of him looking so funny in her dad's short little trousers and dancing shoes! With Helen trying not to laugh.

user1497207191 · 04/10/2021 13:25

I seem to remember he got a puncture on the way which is why his shoes/trousers were wet. Then there was confusion that he hadn't booked and that he misunderstood when the maitre'd asked if he was "staying" or not, i.e. with a room or just a walk in, James told Helen it was a dinner dance, but got the days wrong and there was no band. It was just one foul up after another. The wet shoes from a puddle of water just didn't do the proper story line justice.

Maireas · 04/10/2021 13:31

I wonder if they changed it because that scene was done in the film and the original tv series? Maybe keeping the spirit without repeating the same story?

But still calling it by the same name. I like this series but I wish they had stuck to the stories in the book (apart from the shocking drunk driving stories - presumably OK at the time).

So why keep the same posh hotel name and keep the wet shoes but leave out the funnier bits?

I know they'll want to try to make differences, but I don't think they're doing the "differences" very well at all, such as the ludicrous story line of Siegfried lying to Tristram about passing his exams.

Maireas · 04/10/2021 16:26

I know what you both mean!
I think it's a really funny part of the book, and gives you an idea of how gauche and self conscious James was. I don't know why they made that choice.

Bloodypunkrockers · 05/10/2021 11:01

I coming at this series without knowledge of the books and with only vague memories of the last series

I'm enjoying it because of that.

Robin233 · 05/10/2021 12:19

I think that’s the best way @Bloodypunkrockers
I read the books over 45 years ago and the series ended over 30 years ago.
It was time for a remake and I’m loving it.

Cattenberg · 05/10/2021 12:45

Tricky Woo looks like a bigger version of my (late) long-haired guinea-pig.

One chapter I liked from the books is when James insisted on “hospitalising” Tricky for two weeks, and actually let let him live in the barn with the farm dogs and run around with them. He lost weight and got fit and Mrs Pumphrey was delighted, but she would’ve been horrified if she’d known how James did it. I’m not sure they covered that properly in the TV series.

And mine too, we called her Piggywoo at times inspired by the original Tricky and she used to sit with us to watch the new series but sadly died in lock down
Notonthestairs · 05/10/2021 16:15

I read the books a long time ago and have bought the new editions recently for my 13 year old.
The books are brilliant fun but were obviously not written with tv series in mind - I think they are quite episodic - so I'm not surprised there has been some tinkering with them to create a bit more character development & a story arch in line with a modern tv series. The Wright family seem to approve. I'm sure the series will further bolster book sales and new generations will come to enjoy them.

I'm really enjoying the new series - it's very well cast, the photography (cinematography?) is beautiful, I'm fond of all of the characters and nothing awful happens.

I have no idea how they will resolve Tristram's lack of qualifications but I'm prepared to overlook it - which is obviously very big of me Grin
