I can't wait. Series 1 was absolutely delightful - I'm so looking forward to it and I seem to have developped a crush on Samuel West.

Would Tristan be able to carry on treating animals if he wasn't fully qualified?

Would Tristan be able to carry on treating animals if he wasn't fully qualified?
I wouldn't have thought so-at least not without supervision!

I think that is why Siegfried is making him tag along with him.

Maireas · 25/09/2021 16:10

Yes, Siegfried will only let him work under supervision, that's why he can't do the surgery load with James.

CaptainMyCaptain · 25/09/2021 16:13

@Notonthestairs

Ah I've just realised that there is no Mrs Pumphrey Sad
Patricia Hodge is taking over the role.

@WatchWait

I'm loving it. The books were my introduction to grown up books in the late 70s, and we used to watch the original series. I am delighted that this current series is as good, if not better. I too have a crush on Samuel West. I love Mrs Hall's character - I think she's been fleshed out a bit, which is fantastic. I wish it was a Sunday evening show though.
i agree with everything you said,everything
WatchWait · 26/09/2021 07:59

@whatsthestory123 did you read the Joyce Stranger books as well? Loved those too!

FlatteredFool · 26/09/2021 09:34

I'm a little bit in love with Siegfried. Dd and I love this show and save it for Friday nights. I love the humour of it and Mrs Hall is fantastic. They are all fantastic. James just makes me smile because he is so smiley. I hope there are many seasons to come.

Clawdy · 26/09/2021 11:34

I like the way Helen is portrayed as a down-to-earth farmer's daughter, no glam hairstyles and make up. I always remember the film version from years ago, with Helen played by a glamorous and rather posh actress - it really didn't work.

Maireas · 26/09/2021 12:02

I agree, @Clawdy. The two film versions featured a rather stuck up Helen, always in pearls and a floral dress. In the books James notes that she strode about the farm wearing trousers and how he was impressed with how practical she was. I thought that was lacking in the old tv series too, she wasn't written well.

Notonthestairs · 26/09/2021 12:12

Yes I thought the film version of Helen was all wrong and lacking in warmth. There really needs to be a close understanding and appreciation between James and Helen and this series gets that spot on.

The new James is so smiley- it's lovely!

I'm very pleased to read that Mrs Pumphrey is still there. I think Patricia Hodge will do an excellent job.

I liked the bit when Helen said that if she hadn’t had to stay on the farm to help her Dad, she’d have gone to secretarial college.

In the books, Helen was a farmer’s daughter. However Alf Wright’s real-life wife was a secretary.

Cattenberg · 26/09/2021 23:08

*Alf Wight, sorry. James Herriot was his pen-name.

How is Tristan supposed to ever qualify as a vet if he doesn’t know he failed? Did he not notice that he didn’t have a graduation ceremony? This is an utterly ridiculous storyline.

I thought he knew, hid it from Siegfried and then S found out.
TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 27/09/2021 08:49

No, that was last time. This time Siegfried told him he graduated but refused to let Mrs Hall give him a bag with MRCVS on it, because he hasn’t really.

Having read all the books years ago, I thought the original Helen in the original series was much better, i.e. Carol Drinkwater - much more down to Earth and "normal". I never really liked Linda Bellingham at all - she played the part with a kind of arrogance which wasn't true to the books at all.

Agree, and not true to the books at all.

OK. It is a ridiculous storyline. A lot of this series seems to involve things not in the book - the jilting at the altar, James's mother accepting a different job for him, Mrs Hall's bigger part and her possible man with dog love interest and so on. In the case of Mrs Hall I do understand the need to create more women's parts though.

@Clawdy

Would Tristan be able to carry on treating animals if he wasn't fully qualified?
In the time periods when the books were set, yes, he would. It was later laws that prohibited people other than qualified vets from treating animals. In the books, there were several stories about unqualified "vets" and do-gooders offering treatments, diagnoses, etc. The point of being qualified was respect and trustworthiness, hence attracting more/better clients. Siegried wouldn't want Tristam doing too much in the medical sphere in case of mistakes that would risk his firm's reputation. And, of course, like most professions, passing the exams is only the start, and you need real life practical/supervised experience to actually "do the job".

Same with humans really. It's surprisingly recent (early 20th Century) when "doctors" were required to be properly qualified/trained to treat humans.

It's why we have the term "quacks". All kinds of people used to ply their "quack" remedies/treatments.

Cattenberg · 28/09/2021 00:24

The exam results storyline is getting on my nerves. The first part, where Tristan misled Siegfried, made sense. But now, Siegfried is trying to mislead Tristan indefinitely and that makes no sense.

Also, has Diana replaced Dorothy as Siegfried’s love interest? I must have missed the bit where that was explained.

diddl · 28/09/2021 08:12

I liked Carol Drinkwater.

Have a feeling that there were compliants about her wearing trousers when the first series aired, so "Helen" didn't after that!

JaneJeffer · 30/09/2021 22:04

New Mrs. Pumphrey does not seem glamorous enough.

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 30/09/2021 22:09

I really like the actress who plays Helen in this. She has such a pretty and characterful face.
