I can't wait. Series 1 was absolutely delightful - I'm so looking forward to it and I seem to have developped a crush on Samuel West.

@purpleme12

Does Jenny call her grandad 'dad'
Richard Alderson is Jenny and Helens Dad. They are sisters. I don't remember seeing a grandad.
purpleme12 · 22/09/2021 22:43

Oh right I had it in my head she was her daughter! I really thought she was!

Peaseblossum22 · 23/09/2021 06:48

Helen and Jenny’s mother died when Helen was about Jenny’s age so Helen had to help bring up her sister and run the farm

Oblomov21 · 23/09/2021 07:01

Enjoyed episode 1.

Notonthestairs · 23/09/2021 21:19

Ah I've just realised that there is no Mrs Pumphrey Sad

Notonthestairs · 23/09/2021 22:05

Lovely episode - a bit of everything pigs, cows, dog and a bit of romance.

savagebaggagemaster · 23/09/2021 22:13

I'm old enough to remember the original bbc tv adaptations and my df got me into the books as a child. I've got the old series on dvd. I was sceptical at first about this new adaptation but I've grown to love it. The casting is superb and it's just so nostalgic and comforting. I used to live in North Yorkshire and could highly recommend visiting the museum in Thirsk which is dedicated to the real James Herriot (Alf Wight, I believe?) It also has exhibits about veterinary medicine of the era and a mock up of the TV set from the bbc series. Oh they also used to have the car driven in the opening titles.

Peaseblossum22 · 23/09/2021 23:04

I loved the books and read and reread them especially the early ones . I always remember the chapter where he had to eat the boiled ham with Helen’s family which was effectively just fat and to get it down he ate a whole jar of piccalili

Last I read they were undecided whether to recast or not.
Clawdy · 24/09/2021 08:21

Yes, the books had some hilarious moments - the bit where his trousers get soaked and he has to wear a pair of Helen's dad's, and they are much too short!

FortunesFavour · 24/09/2021 08:45

And Tricky Woo going flopbot and crackerdog in the books. Love it Grin

I could have sworn I saw a clip with Mrs Pomphrey. I thought it was Patricia Hodge, or someone that looked like her
Doomscrolling · 24/09/2021 09:41

@Bloodypunkrockers In S1 it was Diana Rigg who has since died.

I know

I thought I saw a trailer for the new series with a different Mrs Pumphrey - it's Patricia Hodge playing her now.

I thought that was with one of the farmers & his wife?
Maireas · 25/09/2021 14:45

I liked the dog owner that could be a love interest for Mrs Hall! That was sweet.

WatchWait · 25/09/2021 14:50

I'm loving it. The books were my introduction to grown up books in the late 70s, and we used to watch the original series.
I am delighted that this current series is as good, if not better.
I too have a crush on Samuel West. I love Mrs Hall's character - I think she's been fleshed out a bit, which is fantastic.

I wish it was a Sunday evening show though.

diddl · 25/09/2021 15:18

I think I misunderstood something in the first ep.

Has Tristan not passed, but he thinks that he has?

purpleme12 · 25/09/2021 15:21

Yes that's right

diddl · 25/09/2021 15:23

@purpleme12

Yes that's right
And Siegfried is the only one who knows?

So at some point he'll have to be told!

Maireas · 25/09/2021 15:38

Mrs Hall knows.
I think the casting is excellent. James is spot on and I'm loving Siegfried. It's a tv tonic!

diddl · 25/09/2021 15:50

Ah yes Mrs Hall had suspected hadn't she & then Siegfried had unwittingly confirmed.

I think that the ages of the actors might be more realistic in this.

I think that "James Herriot" was only mid 20s when he started work for Siegfried, Siegfried being about 5yrs older & Tristan the same age!

Maireas · 25/09/2021 15:53

Yes, I'm glad they cast a young Scotsman as James, and a Yorkshire woman as Helen!

Hellocatshome · 25/09/2021 15:54

I got the impression that the dog owner that may be Mrs Halls new love interest may be some sort of con man. I'm not sure why though.
