Anyone else getting excited? The Diana trailer looks great. It's on Netflix on 15th November.

I agree OVienna. The thing I most remember about Aberfan at the time was the widely shared report of the Queen crying and the press all lowering their cameras. That isn't what happened in the Netflix version. Why not? There was a lot of made-up rubbish about the influence of the Duke of Windsor and Churchill.
My earliest memory is of Queen Mary's funeral in 1952, but I don't think it is just about remembering the events and growing up with an obsessively royalist mother.
OC, H B-C, Thatcher (and I loathe her as much now as I did then) just don't feel right. The portrayals are too coarse. Both Philips, Charles and Anne feel much more authentic.

HermioneWeasley · 15/11/2020 18:06

Watched half of it so far and enjoying it. The actress playing Diana is excellent.

GA’s voice is spot on. Didn’t realise until I heard her when I was looking away and it could have been Thatcher. Equally agree at surprised at feeling sorry for her in the Balmoral episode, but they really do believe that 1) they are better than everyone else, and 2) the country is lucky to have their service,

Absolutely ghastly anachronism.

mrscampbellblackagain · 15/11/2020 18:09

I think the actress playing Diana is fantastic. There are some extremely poignant moments.

derxa · 15/11/2020 18:14

I was fuming at the pro-IRA voiceovers. They killed plenty of Irish people too, including women and children. I agree

southeastdweller · 15/11/2020 18:15

Emma Corrin who plays Diana is on a journey to international stardom with this performance, although I think she overdid the coyness (or was badly directed) in the engagement interview scene.

Gillian Anderson has truly transformed herself as Thatcher. I find her very believable, which is amazing because the two of them look nothing alike.

mrscampbellblackagain · 15/11/2020 18:20

I thought Gillian was incredibly good, I also loved DT Smile

Thentherewasyou · 15/11/2020 18:20

@toconclude @derxa as far as I am aware that was the actual content released by the IRA so not pro IRA just historically accurate in terms of what they released when claiming responsibility for the Warrenpoint soldiers and Mountbatten.

derxa · 15/11/2020 18:21

Gillian Anderson has truly transformed herself as Thatcher. I find her very believable, which is amazing because the two of them look nothing alike. More like Faith Brown's impression of Thatcher

jeez2020 · 15/11/2020 18:26

Just starting episode 3.... did anyone else see the mouse or whatever it was running across the floor in Buckingham palace? Wtf was that about!!!!

iftherewereahorseyinthehouse · 15/11/2020 18:26

I've watched one.m but Gillian Anderson is really off putting. And I've loved her for years, I think she's wonderful. She's overdoing it.

mrscampbellblackagain · 15/11/2020 18:32

I did @jeez2020, BP is certainly not an appealing place to live

derxa · 15/11/2020 18:33

It juxtaposes the killing of Lord Mountbatten with the hunting activities of the Royal family. Highly political

notarealroyal · 15/11/2020 18:34

NC for this as otherwise it's outing.

But my DN is PW in episodes 9 and 10!

Had a great time filming and actors were all lovely in RL.

I loved Emma portrayal of Emma and Josh if Prince Charles.

Did not rate the portrayal of Thatcher.

I though Olivia Coleman was fine as queen and good actress but the character wasn't how I'd expected the queen to be.

Obviously I'm aware of that (I am old enough to remember it in real time). But the way it was used frankly seemed very pro-IRA to me, and it wouldn't be the first time American or American-targeted media has romanticised those butchers.

HilaryThorpe · 15/11/2020 18:35

Yes Faith Brown is exactly right as a description of GA's voice. 😀 There is no way Thatcher and Denis would have been as unsophisticated as that by then. (Though the bit about the shoes may be accurate).

JamminDoughnuts · 15/11/2020 18:35

that is exciting @notarealroyal

IcedPurple · 15/11/2020 18:45

@jeez2020

I've just finished episode 2 and loving it because I'm of the era that grew up with this. I don't understand people's dislike of Olivia Coleman or hbc ... why not? Also Charles, I'm feeling so sorry for him. Thatcher seems spot on to me! Maybe it's because I'm not a royalist or a Tory?

The costume are incredible and I think the actors playing Diana and Anne are brilliant

Not sure what being a royalist or Tory (I'm neither) has to do with anything.

Regarding Colman, my main issue is that she's just too easy to read. The queen is always totally inscrutable. Claire Foy captured this, but I could read Colman like a children's book. The accent is bad too.

As for Bonham Carter, well, you always know what you're going to get when you cast her. She's always fun to watch, but nowhere near as good as Vanessa Kirby. She's playing the same character she always plays, more or less.

I have only seen Anderson from the trailers but as I said above, she looks like the Spitting Image version of Thatcher. More of a caricature than a portrayal.

derxa · 15/11/2020 18:48

Gillian Anderson is Peter Morgan's partner hence the casting

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 15/11/2020 18:49

I can't get my head round Gillian Anderson apparently wearing a fat suit to play Thatcher she is TINY Baffled Confused

Watching "the ibble dibble scene"

Excruciating Shock

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 15/11/2020 18:50

although I think she overdid the coyness (or was badly directed) in the engagement interview scene.

Diana overdid the coyness in the engagement interview so this must be going some! (Not seen that episode yet)

ThistleWitch · 15/11/2020 18:55

Ep 4 - christ, they don't like Eddie as much as Charlie - first scene, looks like an utter arse

southeastdweller · 15/11/2020 18:56

@derxa

Gillian Anderson is Peter Morgan's partner hence the casting
That was a rather bitchy comment. Gillian Anderson has proved herself again and again to be a great actress and already has had rave reviews for this performance.
Thentherewasyou · 15/11/2020 19:00

@toconclude I hope you feel equally stronger about the butchers on the other side!

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 15/11/2020 19:01

Erin Doherty remains the highlight of these new series

LondonlovesLola · 15/11/2020 19:10

More like Faith Brown's impression of Thatcher

Yes! Haha! So bad!!!
