Anyone else getting excited? The Diana trailer looks great. It's on Netflix on 15th November.

Getting into the Diana years is difficult I think. It’s too recent, the people involved are still alive, and their children, so it all becomes a bit tabloid and trashy.

There are some dreadful Diana films. So far this is right up there with them. Other than the wonderful sets it’s not great (on episode 3) very dull so far. 😓😓😓😓😓

WotWouldCJDo · 15/11/2020 12:04

I like the ambiguity of Diana in episode 1. I didn’t know Charles had dated her sister.

KurriKawari · 15/11/2020 12:05

Hope the Crown propels Josh O'Connor to all the awards and stardom. He was sublime in God's Country.

I watched season 3 my skipping all the scenes he wasn't in because OC was awful as I expected (so over rated) wish they'd just aged her up.

LondonlovesLola · 15/11/2020 12:08

‘Ibble dibble dibble ibbles tippititop...’
Oh dear. As if that happened.

LondonlovesLola · 15/11/2020 12:09

Agree OC is not as good as CF.

500 pages to organise his funeral?? (Mountbatten)

LondonlovesLola · 15/11/2020 12:14

So much about episode 2 and 3 to dislike but I’ll wait until others have watched before I go into a full on rant.
I’m so disappointed! 😭

Thentherewasyou · 15/11/2020 12:29

I don’t know why Charles is upset about his portrayal. I know there’s poetic licence and it’s a fictional show but the main facts are there

  • he was having an affair with Camilla when she was married
  • he gave Camilla a personalised bracelet in the run up to the his wedding
  • he continued having an affair with Camilla when he was married.
  • Camilla continued the affair with him when she knew he was married and his wife was pregnant

All of which make them both very unsavoury people with poor morals and definitely not deserving of the honour of their roles. But again this is an issue with the monarchy in general - they do not seem to be nice people - dysfunctional, poor moral outlooks, not intelligent etc.

That bad huh?

I agree with others that programmes like this seem a bit tawdrier the closer they get to the present day. Anyone under the age of 50 or so won't remember any of the events in series 1 and 2, and even those old enough to have been around will only have distant memories. But as the events pass from the 'historic' to the 'contemporary' it begins to seem more like gossip than historical drama. Must also be harder on the actors to portray people most of us have been watching all our lives in real life, rather than those we only know from black and white news reels.

@Thepilotlightsgoneout

Season 3 was disappointing, I didn’t like the cast change and I thought quite a few episodes were really boring.

Might just rewatch the classy and elegant seasons 1 and 2.

i agree, i hadnt in fact planned to watch as it became closer to now, a risk of being trashy.
LondonlovesLola · 15/11/2020 12:37

Iced purple: But as the events pass from the 'historic' to the 'contemporary' it begins to seem more like gossip than historical drama.

Definitely!

Good portrayal so far: Charles
Bad: Thatcher, Anne... everyone else. Script.

Loving the set and ‘production’ though.

LondonlovesLola · 15/11/2020 12:39

Have the scriptwriters changed (from seasons1/2) as well as the actors?

southeastdweller · 15/11/2020 12:44

It's disappointing that the wedding of Charles and Diana wasn't featured.

I've only seen the trailers for series 4 thus far, but Gillian Anderson as Thatcher looks terrible. Her performance seems theatrical and she looks like an old lady, but Maggie was only in her early 50s at the time. I thought the actress playing Ann was good in the 3rd series, though they didn't give her much to do except be 'sassy'. Josh O'Conner is great I agree. As is Tobias Menzies.
Sabrina124 · 15/11/2020 12:49

I am enjoying it. However I was born in the 90s so this era is still 'historical' to me so that could be why. I don't think Charles has been depicted as badly as he could have been tbh.

FelicityPike · 15/11/2020 12:53

Yeah he really thought he was something that one! Andrew is very like him (according to “the real reason” the IRA blew him away!)

Exactly my thoughts.
GA is doing a very bad impression of her at best.

I agree! The Queen is portrayed dreadfully though! If anyone should be fuming it should be her...! 😂

IcedPurple · 15/11/2020 13:08

Yes - in the late 1970s Thatcher was about the same age as Anderson is now, so why the need for the 'ageing' make up? I get that won't have been Anderson's decision, but it looks ridiculous.

WotWouldCJDo · 15/11/2020 13:18

I think the costumes are great.

I wonder if Andrew and Edward will ever get a mention, let alone screen time.

MadamBatty · 15/11/2020 14:31

I’m likingGA as Thatcher...I know they’ve ‘aged’ her but that was Thatcher. The very set prim hair & suits & makeup. I even think she has her walk.

HilaryThorpe · 15/11/2020 14:38

I disliked series 3 - I was an adult by the late sixties and could see how much they were changing what actually happened, for dramatic effect. Just watched the first two of the new series and agree the Thatcher portrayal is dreadful.
It looks beautiful and the costumes are good, but episode two with the stag stuff took an awful lot from the film The Queen. I don't like Olivia Colman or H B-C, but the others are good.

CherryCherries · 15/11/2020 14:49

GA sounds like Thatcher but I'm finding her voice portrayal too exaggerated. MT was actually quite a charming woman and wouldn't have been so stuck up, especially to the royal family in the beginning

Faffandahalf · 15/11/2020 14:50

Whoever said above they didn’t find the ibble dibble stuff realistic, I think these are just the kinds of parlour games the upper class play. Confused they all come across as horrible snobs because that’s what they are.
Cannot actually believe I was on Thatchers side in that ep. Totally felt her utter bafflement at all the mad Balmoral stuff. Bloody hell!
She’s the working underclass in those scenes and we sympathise with her. Ha!

LondonlovesLola · 15/11/2020 14:53

I think GA is portraying MT in a very withering way. It’s annoying.
She was domineering, ruthless, abrupt and quite mad.
