New dram series starts tonight on bbc 1

With only hours left to deliver a draft of a book to her publishers , writer Arabella is tempted into a night out with a friend ........

the series is set in London and centers around the story of a young woman who must rebuild her life after her drink is spiked with a date rape drug

I took it that she was goading him - occasionally dropping hints that she was aware he had raped her, to fuck him up essentially.
Dry humping someone against their consent is also sexual assault, penetration or not. The fact that they'd just had consensual sex (I think the other guy did in the end agree to using a condom) is one of the interesting facets. Policeman almost disregards Kwame's assault, because he had previously consented. Perhaps Kwame is also a bit confused- was it assault? Why was it so traumatic, given that it was originally a consensual Grindr hook-up? Again, exploring the line between consent & rape, brilliantly.

louise5754 · 28/06/2020 23:14

I rewatched all the episodes.

This time I noticed Arabella ask the police if it was rape to take off the condom.

Do people think it's right to publicly call him a rapist?

famousforwrongreason · 29/06/2020 00:46

@louise5754 why not? Maybe not 'socially acceptable' to publicly call him a rapist. But the beauty of the moment is in the fact that he's clearly partaken in predatory behaviour more than once with different women.
In the programme she is dealing with the trauma of the drug rape and then the next guy she sleeps with commits a sexual offence as well.
It's a fantastic moment and it makes me so sad about the countless times where men and boys have taken advantage either violently or by stealth and we've collectively said nothing.

famousforwrongreason · 29/06/2020 00:47

I read earlier that episode 7 is airing 20th July. Does anyone know any different? Hoping not to wait that long.

Ulysses · 29/06/2020 07:40

Episodes 7 and 8 are available on iPlayer now @famousforwrongreason and looks like you can watch on normal TV tonight at 1045.

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 29/06/2020 10:47

I wouldn't have the guts to do what she did. But she knows it is true, and given her experience of going down the 'reporting to the police' route (i,e how long it takes), perhaps thinks this is a better way of protecting other women and achieving justice.
I think she's probably right.

PerditaProvokesEnmity · 29/06/2020 11:15

I rewatched all the episodes.

Impressive dedication louise!

I wouldn't have the guts to do what she did.

You might if you were her Ihaventgottime. We've seen that Arabella is someone whose life is lived primarily through socialising and social media. Unlike MC, Bella isn't actually particularly reflective - her first book was created from Twitter snippets, and I'm certain the reason she was struggling (even before the assault) with the second is because it's not being written 'in public'. I'd imagine accusing him through a 'verbal tweet', even while standing on a podium, would be much easier for her than interminable wrangling with police and counsellors.

famousforwrongreason · 29/06/2020 12:14

Oh yay. Thanks @Ulysses

Lottapianos · 29/06/2020 16:43

Watched episode 7 and 8 today. My god it's good. I rewatched her monologue from the start of episode 8 several times. Brilliant writing.

CheshireChav · 29/06/2020 19:04

Me too @Lottapianos .. I want to discuss it , but don't want to spoil it for others so can everyone else hurry up and watch it please!

PerditaProvokesEnmity · 29/06/2020 19:10

Don't mind me - I can avoid the thread till I've watched them ... (Itunes rather than iplay, here.)

NewNewt · 29/06/2020 19:29

episode 8 ending what happened?!

Ellabella222 · 29/06/2020 22:59

Italian BF sadly let me down. Will say no more.

buildingbridge · 29/06/2020 23:27

I don't understand....what happened with Biago?

KitchenDancefloor · 29/06/2020 23:54

I wanted Biagio to redeem himself... gah
I shall say no more as I don't want to give any spoilers. GAH!

megletthesecond · 30/06/2020 00:44

If my kids weren't in the house I'd have been yelling at the tv at 7 & 8.

Babymamamama · 30/06/2020 01:01

When are we allowed to discuss? So many questions about Biagio that's all I'm saying.

PerditaProvokesEnmity · 30/06/2020 01:13

Oh wow - I think Ep 7 may be the darkest yet. No assaults, no bad sex, just some masks very carefully peeled off.

And once again I worried for them - the core three anyway - because Bella seems to be the glue that holds them together and she seems to be, if not actually falling apart, ricocheting from one impulse to the next and not checking exactly whom she should trust.

I hated her retrospective conversation with Theo. How did Bella end up as the bad guy?

Feel all unsettled now ...

(Hope Ep 8 will cheer me up.)

Confused It won't
dorthopa · 30/06/2020 06:42

Spoilers below..

Oh I hated biagio's victim blaming but I actually think his reaction was fair enough. She hasn't seen him for months and yet lets herself in his house??

CheshireChav · 30/06/2020 07:01

♦️Im discussing episode 8 ..... spoilers ♦️

I got the impression that Biagio does care but something else was going on, is he with someone else? Has he got further involved in drug trouble and didn't want her involved ... or just didn't want the drama?

So Simon's a good guy? He only left Bella that night because Terri insisted, and he's keeping away, and not disclosing this to protect Terri and Bella's friendship?

Theo gives me the creeps.

Kwame ... bloody hell.

CrowdedHouseinQuarantine · 30/06/2020 07:10

Can I say, I would have taken the pizza Sad

poor Arabella
and also hated retrospective discussion with Theo

megletthesecond · 30/06/2020 07:17

I was like "TAKE THE PIZZA!". Although, not going in the first place would have been a better idea.

Kwame needs to delete the hook up apps on his phone.

dorthopa · 30/06/2020 07:49

Biagio looked genuinely freaked out and scared.

ageingdisgracefully · 30/06/2020 08:15

Yay! 7 and 8 on iPlayer.

I must admit I haven't the foggiest what's going on, but I'm finding it horribly fascinating.
