Great British Sewing Bee 2020 part 2

Hope I haven’t jumped the gun, but the old thread was getting quite full.

I’ve just been browsing the
www.bigcommunitysew.co.uk/
and trying to work out what sewing machines they were using at home. I always do that when a magazine has a feature about one if the contestants. Blush
I think Therese has the same Juki machine as I have and she’s also got the mini quilter too. Lucky lass.

Also, do you think that maybe either Therese or that slightly annoying bloke Peter might have won this year as they also have Juliet, the winner from the last series in this group?

I did feel that was rather unsporting of Clare, and yes, Nicole's politeness was impeccable but her annoyance radiated from every pore.

Roussette · 22/05/2020 08:35

Yes, it was.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 22/05/2020 08:43

Behind her prim and proper exterior there is clearly a ruthless streak to Clare. It's just not cricket to do what she did!!

SchadenfreudePersonified · 22/05/2020 08:43

It was rude.

I wish Nicole had said "Well - I'd rather you didn't"

People have used the same fabric occasion in the past, though - but I'd rather they didn't TBH. I find it hard enough keeping tabs on who's done what to start with.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 22/05/2020 08:46

It was when Clare said "Nicole always makes such good fabric choices" or words to that effect, that a little bit of me thought :Cheating".

Even though I love her style (and shoes).

CaptainMyCaptain · 22/05/2020 08:46

Do we know who actually set eyes on it first, though. Maybe Clare saw it first and was being super polite, like when you apologise to someone who has bumped into you.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 22/05/2020 09:00

I got the decided impression that Clare knew Nicole had already chosen the fabric (maybe it was a subliminal challenge to her?)

CaptainMyCaptain · 22/05/2020 09:04

The whole thing is heavily edited so we'll never know. Nicole and Clare are such diametrically opposite personalities. Nicole has a very expressive face but Clare is more buttoned up. I wonder what they think if they are reading this thread.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 22/05/2020 09:46

Must admit, I like both of them (I didn't like Nicole at first, but now I do - very much, and she's a super seamstress), but I just thought it was a little "off" to go for the sam material.

I've been watching the Spanish version of the Sewing Bee, made by the same company but with a lot of differences. It's much longer - each episode is 2.5 hours. Much more emphasis on fashion and creativity than on the quality of the sewing. And they really ramp up the drama - they're only allowed into the haberdashery once and if you forger to pick up patterns or thread, tough shit. Team challenges to whip up competitivity between the contestants, ridiculously short time to do things - 90 minutes for a tailored jacket or ball gown. All a bit silly.

On the flip side though, the three judges are excellent and ever episode one of them does the challenge along with the contestants. Great to see how a professional would approach it. They have a VERY strong emphasis on waste, reuse, being conscious of the cost of things and not cutting out a pattern three times because you cocked it up first two times. Their version of the "transformation challenge" always reuses old clothes, second hand or weird and wacky things. They also in the past have made bags and shoes as well as clothing.

Shame it's only available in Spanish, if you don't speak it to a reasonable level you wouldn't really follow it. I have expanded my vocabulary considerably with words like overlocker, seams, drape, bias, neckline, hem...

SoupDragon · 22/05/2020 10:08

ever episode one of them does the challenge along with the contestants

That would be amazing!

Halsall · 22/05/2020 10:15

It's really interesting how other countries change their approach to well-known British TV show formats. I got very into the German version of 'Come Dine With Me' when I had a few days working over there, and they were marked on things like table presentation, with competitors spending serious money on making it look good.

They also took the cooking element incredibly seriously, for the most part. It was still a jokey format, but blimey, those people were out to win.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 22/05/2020 10:47

@Halsall I always get the feeling that the Germans are a very competitive race. I should know as I once undertook weeks of travel with a German friend and two English friends. The games of Uno became impossibly competitive between DGF and one DEF (but who has German ancestry quite recently in her family tree!).

Halsall · 22/05/2020 10:56

That's funny, NewModel Grin

Am I imagining it or was there discussion about a French version of Sewing Bee on previous threads? I'd like to see the Spanish one now too!

SockYarn · 22/05/2020 13:04

The Spanish one is called "Maestros de la Costura" and is very much high-fashion focused. The three judges (Palomo Spain, Lorenzo Caprile and Maria Escote) are all well-known designers in Spain.

The presenter is also ridiculously glam and changes into a new designer frock for each challenge.

I'm sure there are links on Youtube. The Spanish version of iPlayer is RTVE. www.rtve.es/television/maestros-costura-3/

SockYarn · 22/05/2020 13:06

According to Wikipedia there are several international versions:

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Great_British_Sewing_Bee#International_broadcast

My French might just about cope with watching, definitely don't speak enough German, Dutch or Danish!

TreeTopTim · 22/05/2020 16:10

Twice now I think Liz has been robbed of garment of the week two weeks in a row. Her tennis dress was beautiful and her sleep set was very well done.

Frenchfancy · 22/05/2020 16:16

The French version was called Cousu Main. It hasn't been on for ages though.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 22/05/2020 21:53

I agree TreeTop

I loved Ali's tennis dress, but Liz's had the edge, and this week her sleep suit totally outshone Theresa's.

I like Theresa, but I don't think she's fulfilled her early promise.

I speak as someone who has stapled hems up before, so I know what I'm talking about when it comes to skillsets.

opinionatedfreak · 22/05/2020 22:13

I don't understand why Theresa hadn't practiced some lingeries.

The previous challenges would strongly suggest you should!

AravisTarkheena · 23/05/2020 00:14

I caught up tonight and I can’t say I felt the fabric swipe was too egregious. It was very nice fabric and very appropriate! Do what you’ve got to do! I also wanted to put in a vote for the Winceyette which I loved. It was bizarre but great. I like all of the participants really and no one is standing out as significantly better than anyone else which I like, seems even.

Also I feel like I only come on here to talk about Patrick but him winking at being called sexy pants set me off like a giggling school girl. I also loved the image of the wee willy winky hat at boarding school which coupled with last weeks mention of roller disco in Tollcross + rugby has now escalated my crush on him into beatlemania territory.

SoupDragon · 23/05/2020 08:37

I didn't like Liz's tennis outfit much. It wasn't really made to measure as it wasn't fitted anywhere. Was it All who won that? Anyway hers was far better and more complicated I thought. I think Therese would have been "robbed" of garment of the week as her sleep wear was lovely too.

I guess they can see more close up that we don't when they are judging it.

I've just Had to look at my Crib sheet (screen shot of photos froM the BBC website)to see who Liz was and came to the conclusion that Clare and Mark could be brother and sister. It might just be the round glasses though!

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 23/05/2020 08:48

On a slightly different tack (!), I absolutely loved the dress Esme was wearing in the most recent episode.

LadyEloise · 23/05/2020 09:37

Fiona and Ali looked very alike to me Blush

CaptainMyCaptain · 23/05/2020 11:24

To me too @LadyEloise. The three men still all look the same.
