Great British Sewing Bee 2020 part 2

Hope I haven’t jumped the gun, but the old thread was getting quite full.

I’ve just been browsing the
www.bigcommunitysew.co.uk/
and trying to work out what sewing machines they were using at home. I always do that when a magazine has a feature about one if the contestants. Blush
I think Therese has the same Juki machine as I have and she’s also got the mini quilter too. Lucky lass.

Also, do you think that maybe either Therese or that slightly annoying bloke Peter might have won this year as they also have Juliet, the winner from the last series in this group?

I think the bag one is stupid but I guess it's testing their creativity. I do find it interesting seeing them come up with such a variety of things.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 21/05/2020 13:17

Actually I love her style full stop - it always makes me think that once she's finished the sewing challenge she's going to pop down and do a shift code-breaking at Bletchley Park.

Same here!

In our house she is "Bletchley Park Wumman"!

SchadenfreudePersonified · 21/05/2020 13:22

These are slightly reminiscent of Clare’s shoes, I thought

The bastards don't have my size in red, Halsall

Bastards.

BASTARDS!!!!!

I loved Lizs sleep set

Same here! My favourite.

I liked the wincyette one, but I would have worn it to a fancy dress party as a Victorian bathing suit - no way would I consider it a sleep set.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 21/05/2020 13:48

I don't want Clare to win because she's clearly one of those people who is just naturally good at everything and for whom it would be just other tick box triumph (but not necessarily mean that much). I would prefer Nicole to win or any of the others TBQH. I was very sad to see Ali go as I liked her a lot.

Halsall · 21/05/2020 13:55

Jolly well dash those utter blighters, Schaden AngryWinkGrin

GoldenRuby · 21/05/2020 15:57

I'm finding Clare infuriatingly smug. Nicole's effort was neater than Clare's in my book, although I much preferred Clare's sleep set. Sad to see Ali go.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 21/05/2020 16:17

Ali and Clare both HCP but chalk and cheese in every other way. Yes totally agree @GoldenRuby. I cannot warm to Clare at all (although I can to all the others).

SchadenfreudePersonified · 21/05/2020 16:22

I liked Ali, too - she was really down to earth.

Erictheavocado · 21/05/2020 16:47

It's probably just me, but how on earth is Peter still there? I just cannot see how he is considered better than those who've gone. Ali might not have always finished and she might have made a few errors, but at least most of her things have been wearable.
Anyway, on another note, when I was taught to follow a pattern, my teacher said the most important thing to do before anything else was to iron the pattern in order to remove the creases so that when you laid it on the fabric to cut, it was 'true'. I still do this even now, almost 45 years later. I don't notice any of the contestants doing it and wondered whether I am the only one who does?
I would love to see some tasks relating to home furnishings or bags etc. I seem to remember that in the very first series they made a bag. I'd be interested to see them turn old towels into a nappy bag, for example, or just give them a load of remnants and see what they make. I think most people who see would be more likely to want ways to use up the odds and ends that are left over from a piece of fabric.

iklboo · 21/05/2020 17:09

My idea of a sleep set is a massive baggy t shirt that comes to my knees and a large gin.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 21/05/2020 17:11

I don't think I've worn sleep attire in the best part of 25 years.... Blush

Halsall · 21/05/2020 17:12

I iron my patterns too, Eric

Marsalimay · 21/05/2020 17:12

I wish they'd swap the silly transformation challenge to a non-clothing task. Fancy-effect cushion, rucksack, soft toy etc. Perhaps they could be expected to do it without a pattern to make it different to the other tasks.

Erictheavocado · 21/05/2020 17:22

@Halsall

Glad it's not just me!

@Marsalimay

I love your idea. I'd love them to understand that sewing isn't only about making clothes.

TheSmallClangerWhistlesAgain · 21/05/2020 17:44

I still can't warm to Nicole. She pulls faces when she's being bollocked for doing things wrong and her sleep set looked horrifically uncomfortable. I like Clare but do understand how others find her smug.

Peter should have gone this week for messing up so badly in the pattern challenge then not doing very well in the made to measure. He didn't just not finish his basque due to running out of time, he did it really wrong and didn't even notice. Although Ali shot herself in the foot by not reading the pattern either.

Roussette · 21/05/2020 17:47

I didn't for about 25 years either but being an old gimmer now I do in the winter but if it's steamin' hot I'm back to nude TMI !

I think Peter is not that good actually and he's just got away with it all, hated that ghastly lace on his sleep thing

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 21/05/2020 17:49

@Roussette I am always hot in bed (ha!) so never need to resort to jimjams. I put it down to the expensive duck down duvet. Oh and the two pud cats who add their bodily warmth. Sleep with the window open in all weathers too.

Roussette · 21/05/2020 18:03

Your idea of hell would be being made to wear those wincyette thick jimjams then!

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 21/05/2020 18:55

They seemed more like Edwardian bathers than night attire! I wasn't particularly struck by any of those bedtime outfifts TBQH.

iklboo · 21/05/2020 18:59

Mine would be an easy sew. I really sleep in the nuddy. Grin

SchadenfreudePersonified · 21/05/2020 21:34

I thought that too.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 21/05/2020 22:02

They were very kind not to mention that Nicole's model had most of a cheek hanging out of those shorts.

I was thinking more nightie and negligee for the challenge, I wouldn't be very confident fitting shorts.

Drysnitchinsbitchin · 21/05/2020 23:33

When Clare asked if she could use the same material, Nicole was saying yes through gritted teeth.
When you're all making the same garment, it's not cricket to use the same material someone else is.

Roussette · 22/05/2020 07:35

I'm just surprised they can use the same material, it should be first dibs on it.
