Head of English: whadda beatch!

unique1986 · 01/03/2020 22:20

So she just wanted to drink loads to avoid going home?

Cary2012 · 01/03/2020 22:30

Ruth (Head of English) is obviously very unhappy at home and loved the idea of a night away from her husband. This is what I love about this writer, she makes you feel uncomfortable. Caroline did want more, regardless of whether it's right or wrong, she saw the evening as a date. Ruth's reaction, and what she does now at work, could turn Caroline's world upside down.
Alan's not happy, is he?

Caroline is in a new school this series. A "difficult" school which I take to mean she's moved from private to state. Head of Eng is right to be pissed off, but obvs turns nasty and personal. Caroline has really broken the code of conduct and will probably be in a lot of trouble.

thenightsky · 01/03/2020 22:39

Blackie Is the Banksy style giraffe still there?

notchickenagain · 01/03/2020 22:51

She didn't want to explain to Ruth why the dog was called Ruth. I can't remember, was it named after her?

ExpletiveDelighted · 01/03/2020 22:53

That barn wall isn't white in Blackie's photo, was it all done by CGI? Seems a bit of a far fetched storyline.

I hadn't realised from Ep1 that Ruth didn't know Caroline was gay, I hadn't twigged that it was a different school, but it makes sense now that Caroline is living closer to Gillian.

Re woodworm, I was wondering about ownership of the farm, didn't Alan live there before he married Celia? I always assumed he owned it jointly with Gillian.

BlackieBooBoo · 01/03/2020 22:57

The giraffe is not there now no.
Dad said two women on a scaffold did it in the rain.

It's not CGI but I'll ask Dad how it was done as that wall end has two doors in it in real life.

I felt that I’d missed a big chunk out somewhere.
I’m sure I watched series 4
It seems a lot darker this time round

Cary2012 · 02/03/2020 06:49

From what I can recall: Alan had his own place before he met Celia which he was letting out to tenants because he had moved into farm to support Gillian following her husband's death, Eddie was her husband IIRC. Farm is Gillian's, Alan had invested in it over the years.
Ruth the dog was named by Flora after a character in Judith's bestselling novel series.
In series 4 Caroline was pushed out of her job at public school because they felt she was underperforming due to her grief over Kate. She had a fling with a woman who owned a wine business and she encouraged her to work in a state school where she could make a difference, so she relocated to where the new school is.

Didn't Caroline get into trouble at her last school over her relationship with a teacher or am I losing the plot? I Ruth obvs has a bit of an issue with booze. Having to plan to leave your car when you've just been invited for a meal shows she planned to get pissed. She may turn nasty.

dogsdinnerlady · 02/03/2020 06:55

Cary...you are right.

CaptainMyCaptain · 02/03/2020 07:16

Same here, there seemed to be gaps. I didn't know she even had a dog or why it was called Ruth. Also what is Raff doing now, was that explained? Was Judith becoming successful and getting that house properly explained or was the just introduced last week?

Surely Caroline didn't do anything inappropriate. She invited the colleague to discuss Judith's visit, talked about that, talked about other things and got drunk. She didn't jump on her or anything but the colleague got funny merely on finding out she was gay. Is she not allowed any female friends?

ExpletiveDelighted · 02/03/2020 07:22

That's how I feel too, as if I've missed chunks when I know I haven't.

Dowser · 02/03/2020 08:07

I don’t remember Caroline’s fling with a woman who owned a wine business
Argh..I’ll have to rewatch series 4 again
We are still fighting our way through OITNB

StSaulOfSnacks · 02/03/2020 08:08

She's sexually interested in her. Invited her to her house after hours and got drunk. It was a ruse to be on her own with her. She's her boss. So yes, Caroline did a lot wrong, and her "oh shit" shows she knows this.

CaptainMyCaptain · 02/03/2020 08:26

She's sexually interested in her.
Yes, but she didn't touch her or make any moves on her. I have had evenings like that with female colleagues (I'm not gay and neither were they). They were sitting on opposite sofas until she showed her the photo of Kate. Caroline knew she wasn't gay, she told Gillian that.

DICarter1 · 02/03/2020 08:33

The wine lady was briefly in Series 5. Having just watched the whole lot not much was explained from series 4. Raff becoming a teacher etc. It feels like we’ve missed a lot of years.

CaptainMyCaptain · 02/03/2020 08:43

Series 4 seemed to be a stand alone thing with the ouija board nonsense that amounted to nothing, the ghost in the barn (why did nobody want to talk to Calamity about the man she'd seen - he might have been real) and the AmDram farce.

StSaulOfSnacks · 02/03/2020 10:05

She made moves by inviting her to stay the night and opening lots of wine. And she's her boss.

Cary2012 · 02/03/2020 10:05

Series 4 was a couple of poor Christmas episodes that culminated with Caroline getting the new job. Prior to that, wine woman had driven into the back of her car, they got friendly and ended up having a fling. Caroline broke up with her then moved to the house near the new job. Wine woman turned up with wine over Christmas and spent the evening with them all, then we never saw her again.
Lots of daft am dram and ouja board stuff.
Main point was Gillian, consumed by guilt told Robbie the truth about Eddie and he went off travelling.
I think Caroline's in the wrong, but Ruth has over reacted and is bigoted against Caroline's sexuality.
The Ruth name was mentioned last week, as was Raff's decision to teach, his wife said he should have taken Gary's offer of training as an accountant which links back to series 3.

We have moved on about 4 years, hence Flora's age. She was about one in the Christmas special which they called series 4.

I predict Ruth's horrible husband at home in the spare room will surface & be a lovely reasonable person & Ruth will be unveiled as a crazy alcoholic homophob. Who will also cause Caroline to leave her job & start looking for partners NOT AT WORK

StSaulOfSnacks · 02/03/2020 11:23

Was dodgy that Ruth walked into her boss's house and instantly said she planned to drink so much she'd need a taxi home. Made me suspicious from then on.

CaptainMyCaptain · 02/03/2020 12:15

I don't like Caroline all that much but I think Ruth over reacted and will turn nasty. She turned up expecting to get drunk and agreed to stay over. She reacted badly because Caroline mentioned she was gay not because she made a proposition. Up until then she was fine with everything.

Doggyperson · 02/03/2020 12:22

I was a bit shocked at Ruths reaction to Caroline saying she was gay, she didn't make a pass at her. Perhaps Ruth will blackmail her to get a promotion.
She's definitely up to something.
