Here we go, our Sunday night trip to Halifax, to see Celia, Alan, Caroline (aka Lady Muck) and the amazing Gillian. And Calamity Jane of course. Hope we enjoy it as much as we are looking forward to it!
See you on t'other side. Grin

Sorry, not for me! Not sure I like any of them!

LuluJakey1 · 23/02/2020 22:08

Well!
Celia was just so mean to everyone!
I don't know why Caroline has to keep finding partners at work - it would bad really frowned upon for a Head to behave like this, and it is not good judgement. I don't think the woman she is interested in is trustworthy; just a feeling about her.
Caroline has aged badly.
Alan is a sweetie still, so is Harry.
The boy shoplifting was a little star- hope he reappears.
Raph and his girlfriend/wife have grown up so much!
I don't find Judith believable at all.

I loved it.

Cary2012 · 23/02/2020 22:12

Love that Raff is a teacher, Calamity a potty mouth and Alan as torn between Celia and his daughter as before. Loved bemused and drippy John.

Celia's snippy, that side of her is more obvious, and not nice.
And Nicola Walker's Gillian stole the show, as per usual. Amazing actress.
Caroline, a bit flat I though.
What did you think?

OP posts:
Cary2012 · 23/02/2020 22:16

When Celia said about the signs of dementia, I wondered if she was spotting them in Alan?

Sarcelle · 23/02/2020 22:17

Nicola Walker steals the scene in every show she is in. Even when she does nothing she has that indefinable something.

Sarah Lancashire's character annoys me, smug. I get that Sarah is a good actress (Happy Valley etc) but I can't warm to her. (Her character is creepily predatory.)

Reid and Jacobi do their usual stellar performances.

Out of all the beautiful properties on the programme, I would like to move into the farm, woodworm and all.

Welcome back LTTH. Much missed!

Susiesoap7 · 23/02/2020 22:17

Just love it! Makes me homesick boo hoo

mum2jakie · 23/02/2020 22:22

God, I'd completely forgotten how much had happened in the last couple of series!! I'd forgotten about Flora and Celia and Alan buying their own place. Can someone remind me what Calamity's real name is please?

LuluJakey1 · 23/02/2020 22:26

It was Emily Jane I think and Alan misheard it over the phone as Calamity Jane- iirc.

ExpletiveDelighted · 23/02/2020 22:30

Celia was a bit too snobby and nasty for me, I get that she is meant to be a bit that way, but we really only saw the bad side of her tonight. Alan deserves better.

I agree that Caroline should stop pursuing her staff members and also think that she doesn't seem to have to do much work.

Apart from that, absolutely brilliant. John out of his depth as a kept man. Raph and his wife so grown up. The very articulate shoplifter. Amazing acting all round, fabulous scenery, the view from Alan and Celia's conservatory, just lovely.

Cary2012 · 23/02/2020 22:36

The shoplifter was great, "I like words, they don't cost anything"
Agree about Caroline, yes predatory is the right word, unsettling and unprofessional.
Love the farm.
Want Robbie to come back, sort the woodworm and love Gillian.

ExpletiveDelighted · 23/02/2020 22:38

Yes, missing Robbie.

viques · 23/02/2020 22:39

The only thing I didn't like was realising this is probably the last series and it isn't many episodes. Spit.

It's like watching a masterclass of acting skills. Plus witty intelligent script, fabulous settings, so great to catch up on old characters and to wonder how the new ones will fit it. Perfect Sunday evening watching.

APatchyTomCat · 23/02/2020 22:45

I’m born and raised in Halifax and now live in Hebden. My PIL live in the same road as Alan & Celia.

We have to watch each episode twice just to get past the ‘oooh that’s so and so...’ Grin and actually concentrate on the story.

DamnYouAutocucumber · 23/02/2020 22:46

I watched tonight, but it made me realise how much of the plot I've forgotten. Spent a lot of the time wondering who people were and trying to remember where they fitted into it all!

LuluJakey1 · 23/02/2020 22:48

DH comes from not far from where it is set and PIL lived near Sowerby Bridge for a number of years. It's a lovely area and I love the accent.

Chienloup · 23/02/2020 23:55

Ahhh, that was like a lovely pair of comfy slippers. Everyone just be the same as before. The characters are so fully-fleshed out and believable, I just love it.

ScapaFlo · 24/02/2020 00:24

Celia is awful! I wondered if she is the one staring with dementia given the phone call to Caroline from her kitchen.

And that kitchen REALLY needs replacing Grin

I love this programme and am delighted it's back

BeaLola · 24/02/2020 01:23

Saw this tonight for first time - was it always a BBC programme ? Trying to figure out how I had missed it ?

I get that somehow Ruby was Caroline's daughter but not biological but whose daughter was the other granddaughter in the back of the Lexus ?

I thought the scenery was just beautiful and Alan and Celia very well written of an much older couple with baggage of all types inc views on money etc who get together in later life. May have to see the rest somehow

RAOK · 24/02/2020 01:29

I love this programme! So happy it’s back!

MaxPaddyandHarry · 24/02/2020 06:29

I thought the children were brilliant.

dogsdinnerlady · 24/02/2020 08:28

Glad it's not just me who found Caroline's behaviour unsettling and predatory. In that shot as the stared after the teacher as she walked away, she was almost leering. Too many yorkshire puddings too.
Agree Judith an unlikely star children's author.
Was Celia's kitchen old and dingy or was it supposed to be ultra mod?
NW brilliant as usual.

PelicanPie · 24/02/2020 08:45

I was actually really disappointed and bored with it. Long dull conversations about nothing. The characters are just caricatures now. Caroline’s behaviour is completely unprofessional and I agree predatory. No on who has worked in a school would believe a Headteacher could behave like she is and it be acceptable.
It’s just really dull now and I don’t know if I will watch the rest of it. Shame, I was really looking forward to it.

ScapaFlo · 24/02/2020 08:57

BeaLola Flora is Caroline's adopted daughter, her mum Kate was married to Caroline but died. Flora's dad was a friend of Kate's who obliged with a sperm donation so Caroline and Kate could have a child.

Calamity is Raff and Mrs Raff's daughter, Gillian's granddaughter. The couple were very young when they got together and it's lovely to see them together and happy seven years later. Sorry I can't remember Mrs Raff's name. Raff is Gillian's son.

dogsdinnerlady · 24/02/2020 09:23

Agree, long rambling speeches about nothing, especially from Alan. I wondered, when his friend changed the subject, whether it is Alan who is showing early signs of dementia. Also Celia's comment about 'Earth to Alan' and him 'staring into space'.
