I think Derek and Anne do a fab job. They don't have Yorkshire accents (he is from London!) but they're pretty convincing, and they are both in their early 80s!

CaptainMyCaptain · 26/02/2020 13:45

Just started watching episode 1 series 1.

WhatKatyDidNot · 26/02/2020 15:50

Jacobi's side eye at Mrs Daily Mail was a slice of TV beauty in this episode.

CaptainMyCaptain · 26/02/2020 16:31

Celia certainly seemed much nicer in series 1.

LuluJakey1 · 26/02/2020 17:51

The thing about Caroline is she is the Head Teacher. She puts herself in a very vulnerable situation by having relationships with her staff- male or female. She is open to all kinds of allegations and accusations. These days Heads really should not be involved with their staff- there should be professional boundaries in place. It shows poor judgement.

I have a friend who had a relationship with the Head Teacher at the school where she taught - he had appointed her as a teacher, they quickly became involved. They were both married and left their husband/wife, he then promoted her to Head of Department. They both claimed it was all properly done but there were two complaints to the Chair of Govs from people who did not get the job. The Head went off on the sick, it was investigated and he resigned.

It was in the local papers for months and the Daily Fail at the time and even last year, when he worked for an Academy Trust it was still an issue. She was appointed as a Deputy Head in that Academy Trust and it all blew up again. He was not involved in the appointment but there were complaints that she had been favoured. She left the job because of the stress and he was 'moved on'. They moved down south to start again.
Caroline should know better. It would only take her approaching the wrong person and she would be accused of sexual harassment or worse and could lose her job.

Oh I love this!!

Blackie - how exciting. That’s incredible.

Celia is getting worse. But I know from my dad & mil that dementia is making them more difficult- I wonder if it’s that?

Not keen either on Caroline going after staff but only because it’s already been done when she met Kate.

The80sweregreat · 26/02/2020 18:28

Lulu, that's awful! I don't remember it being in the fail but it goes to show how people think that nepotism can go 'under the radar 'but it doesn't! (However , it still goes on at the school where I work with ' who you know' still being more important than what you know!) A lot of public service jobs seem to be this way.
Caroline in this should know better really.

EnidBlyton · 27/02/2020 20:00

They were talkign on the radio, I might ahve to start watching

Nonnymum · 27/02/2020 20:14

The acting is a joy to watch. Have to say I prefer the gurct series though. It was lovely to see Celia and Alan's relationship rekindling. Celia was quite nice then. She is horrible now.

CaptainMyCaptain · 27/02/2020 20:51

I'm on episode 4 of series 2 now. Why can't they all shut shut up and not keep blabbing each others secrets all the time? Celia was quite fun and adventurous although she was showing her malicious side at times even then. The acting is excellent from everyone.

southeastdweller · 27/02/2020 21:21

Celia has always been an obnoxious old bag (her disgusting comments in the last episode of series 1 about Caroline and Kate, and her refusal to go to their wedding in series 3).

CaptainMyCaptain · 27/02/2020 21:45

She sort of explained that in episode 1 saying she was afraid it was her fault she'd made her that way. She definitely always had a nasty streak though and Caroline is just as bad in many ways - judgemental and snobbish.

EnidBlyton · 27/02/2020 22:38

just seen episode 1 from series 1, i did watch it before but will give it more of a chance this time

CaptainMyCaptain · 28/02/2020 06:56

Also, I keep saying 'Oh Gillian.... No!'

Squigean · 28/02/2020 18:17

Me to.

I managed to completely and utterly forget she'd killed her husband's brother. Memory like a sieve.

CaptainMyCaptain · 28/02/2020 19:13

Actually I could understand how that happened. I was thinking of falling into bed with all the men.

Funkycats · 28/02/2020 20:38

Ewwww I would not want to fall in bed with John. The others were OK though. Robbie gets my vote any day of the week.

CaptainMyCaptain · 28/02/2020 20:54

Don't fancy Robbie or John both vile in different ways. The John actor played almost exactly the same character in Fresh Meat.

Magicpaintbrush · 28/02/2020 22:50

Noticed that Raff has mentionitis about his female work colleague (whose name I forget) - I wondered if they are setting the scene for some innappropriate stuff behind the back of his pregnant wife. Hope not.

The80sweregreat · 29/02/2020 09:45

John is odd. Robbie was ok!

WhatKatyDidNot · 29/02/2020 10:07

If I'm remembering the earlier series correctly, Celia and Alan have a couple of scenes in which they discuss political differences but the show is saying that the twilight years love and fear of loneliness/lack of intimacy can transcend them. And it's quite moving - as it would be with such accomplished actors.

It seems this series might be exploring the notion that love isn't enough after all - which is truthful in many cases.

I'm actually looking forward to seeing how the show deals with it. Marriage between Alan and Celia becoming rocky - but will there be/can there be a happy ending by series close?

The80sweregreat · 29/02/2020 10:11

She said to Alan ' your left leaning tendencies' !
Celia wouldn't do well on Mumsnet.

CaptainMyCaptain · 29/02/2020 11:23

Robbie was ok! I thought he was a scary thug albeit useful on a farm compared to John.

BlackieBooBoo · 29/02/2020 13:51

Very beak and cold.

Love the nosey hens @BlackieBooBoo! Smile I'd imagine you need to be made of stern stuff to live on your DF's farm!
