It was quite a bitty episode this week, but Phyllis makes it all for me. It feels like Sister Julienne had taken a bit of a step back. I would still like more emphasis on the midwives and life in Poplar and less time spent on Dr Turner.

Winterfishing · 21/01/2020 15:51

I cannot wait for the episode when Dr Turner is found to have been dipping into his own Prozac and is struck off the medical register.

Simpering wifey had also secretly been injecting morphine and all their children and bunny rabbits are removed to a better home.

Timothy is found with a stash of illicit nun videos he took with his cine camera last series.

Late night special that one so it can include the Turners big reveal of the sex dungeon under the Turners house (the as of yet unrevealed reason they bought the house).

Turners sex dungeon Shock

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 21/01/2020 17:40

Phyllis is amazing.

All continuing rewatching series 1 and the contrast is huge. It was so much better. Warmer but harder hitting, the way the stories wove into each other. Jenny's evident awareness of being a fish out of water and learning how privileged she is. It was brilliant. I just watched when Peggy and Frank died today. Heartbreaking. The way Sister J got on with it. Now they seem to have to have Sister J and company condoning things as well as being non judgemental. Back then they were able to step back and give the loving care that needed regardless of the situation. Now it has to be all "look at us being all liberal and accepting".

Am laughing at the thought of the Turners on drugs. Mrs T is much nicer as a nun.

FlamingoAndJohn · 21/01/2020 18:06

•I'd have thought Phyllis was very capable of assessing her herself without Dr Turner sitting outside chiming in!

I thought that as well.
I suspect the might have needed a doctor to refer her for surgery but Phyllis was more than capable of examining and diagnosing the problem.

I love Phyllis.
You know how now that you are an adult something serious happens and you look for a more adulty adult who really knows what is going on, rather than you who is just winging it? Phyllis is the adulty adult.

The Turners' sex dungeon is of course teal.

They call it The Teal Room and it has teal spanking paddles.

Mrsjayy · 21/01/2020 18:23

Drippy wife: Och, Dr Turner, this reminds me of my misspent youth in the convent!

Dr Turner: Let me mansplain Catholicism to you whilst spanking you with this teal paddle.

I remember being in hospital when pregnant with dc1 - over 20 years ago. It was like God had arrived on the wards when it was consultant day.

NumbersStation · 21/01/2020 20:16

Brace yourself Turner...

NumbersStation · 21/01/2020 21:08

It may be a wow.

But it is teal and therefore allowed in Turner’s pit of shame. Wink

For some reason my app never lets me post pictures. I found some beautiful latex nun outfits though. Sadly not in teal.

TwoHeadedYellowBelliedHoleDig · 21/01/2020 21:29

They should lose Violet and Fred for the soap factor, and Dr Turner for the gurning know it all - except he's not - these days he'd be that GP that googles during a consult. Why can't there be a programme that simply depends on strong female characters?

Grin. I would say I’m helpless but I don’t want dr Turner rushing to my assistance...

😮Jesus I only went out for the evening and this thread took a turn. Grin

june2007 · 21/01/2020 23:28

No they shouldn,t loose Fred as he was based on an actual person and is in Jennifer Worths book.

Squigean · 22/01/2020 07:52

Don't think anyone wants to lose Fred. He's a support character really there for a bit of humour.

I just thought, does CtMW fail the (opposite of) Bechdel test? (Ok so such a test doesn't exist, I dont think, there's the required. But it's fascinating, like @TwoHeadedYellowBelliedHoleDig said, that we just can't seem to have a program that depends on strong female characters.)
