What is going on with Mother Mildreds make up?

I too was hoping Dr Miseryguts would banish himself to some far off rock.
It completely put me off watching it in future too, beyond implausible!

I still enjoyed it I have to say @Northernsoullover, just lack the usual pleasant schmaltz.

Not going to easily get over my disappointment of not getting rid of the doctor.

he child getting burned when her nightie caught fire was alarming, but back in the 60s when many people had open coal fires that kind of thing did happen. I can remember campaigns in the 70s and 80s to pressure manufacturers to make children's nightwear and soft furnishings from fire retardant fabric.
Yep, grew up in the 1970s (in polyester nighties) and remember public info films about this, my grandparents had open fires still and they were always very nervous about this with children around.

I thought Dr T would stay, and Effie would go back to London. Maybe they were sewing the seeds for the next series.,

I enjoyed it but I can see why people turned it off. My ds was saying 'mummy this is not a happy thing to watch'.

That Effie would leave her cousin after being instrumental in her getting burned was unbelievable.

The whole exodus to the Highlands was so stupid.

How they could be replaced by one district nurse when they had dealt with back to back disasters was ridiculous. How Poplar managed without them when they are always portrayed as so busy and hard-working.

The whole premise was madness and a point the programme - I have loved it for years but I think it’s had it’s day now.

@custardT no it tends to just be wet and windy. Not much snow on the coast.
The light was all wrong though, no winter skys.
It was on earlier this year though wasn't it?
I have family who live and work on the islands, one as a midwife. It was realistic even now about the lack of doctor and the distance to hospital. The maternity unit in Oban on the main land is midwifery led they have to travel 2 hours for a doctor.

We have the Presbyterian church (church of Scotland, the Kirk) The Reformed Presbyterian Church and the Free Presbyterian Church
They would all refer to themselves as the Presbyterian church.

Watched every single CTM episode and Christmas special and this one was just meh in my opinion .

However, when Dr (smug) Turner mentioned a wish to be the islands Doctor I was and am all for it . Haha . Not Shelagh and the kids though, just Dr Turner.

I love CTM but like Downton it's really had it's day. Besides, the order it's based on pulled out of the east end in the late 60's or 70's.

The light was glaringly obviously wrong in the scene at the end when they got back to Poplar. They film the Christmas special in summer and boy did it show last night.

I quite enjoyed it, but it wasn't vintage CTM.

Effie had wonderful hair.

The bit where they were all sat about trying to peel potatoes was painful to watch. Good thing they are all medically trained because it was definitely going to end in tears!

It was predictably schmalzy but I quite enjoyed it. The pain-faced doctor (thanks PP!😂) raised hopes briefly with talk of relocation. Helen George seems to have toned down the accent at last (and I liked her nuanced discussion with the wonderful Phyllis about alcoholism).

Effie was very well acted, and like a PP, I thought she’d return to London to train with them because she clearly desperately needed a change of scene, unlike the lighthousekeeper’s wife who genuinely felt at home there having returned from the mainland. The contrast between the two young women was stark.

Mrs Dobbie was plausible and not overdone by the writers/actress.

Reggie’s disappointment about Fred’s absence was realistic and I liked the reference to Guinness World Records - that was a big thing then, and continued to be in the 1970s when I was born.

Bored of Sister MJ now. The character can’t evolve for obvious reasons but still, the repetition is annoying. Some excellent turns of phrase though.

Love Fenella Woolgar. Would have preferred her as a doctor replacing Turner rather than as a nun up against the superb Agutter and Margoyles for airtime.

I gave up a long time ago. Simply can't stand the doctor and sickly sweet Sheilagh ! It was on in the background and my spirits soared when he was trying to convince Sheilagh to stay ...But they were then cruelly dashed apparently though we had turned off by then !

Disappointing, boring, implausible. I agree that it’s probably had its day.
