It was predictably schmalzy but I quite enjoyed it. The pain-faced doctor (thanks PP!😂) raised hopes briefly with talk of relocation. Helen George seems to have toned down the accent at last (and I liked her nuanced discussion with the wonderful Phyllis about alcoholism).
Effie was very well acted, and like a PP, I thought she’d return to London to train with them because she clearly desperately needed a change of scene, unlike the lighthousekeeper’s wife who genuinely felt at home there having returned from the mainland. The contrast between the two young women was stark.
Mrs Dobbie was plausible and not overdone by the writers/actress.
Reggie’s disappointment about Fred’s absence was realistic and I liked the reference to Guinness World Records - that was a big thing then, and continued to be in the 1970s when I was born.
Bored of Sister MJ now. The character can’t evolve for obvious reasons but still, the repetition is annoying. Some excellent turns of phrase though.
Love Fenella Woolgar. Would have preferred her as a doctor replacing Turner rather than as a nun up against the superb Agutter and Margoyles for airtime.
