MY MUM HAD THAT! 😂😂

Saucery · 20/01/2020 13:28

We had a tablecloth out of the material Trixie’s dress was made of!

😀

What was the point of that storyline about the adopted woman who didn't want to leave the hospital ?

SoupDragon · 20/01/2020 14:26

I think it was the expectation that her mother would be able to help her when in she was actually just as much of a newbie as the new mother. It was highlighting the issues with continuity of care maybe - the hospital midwife knew but the community one afterwards wouldn't have necessarily known she had no experienced mother to help her (which would have been the expectation). Didn't Lucille say something about how she had only known because she'd seen her in hospital?

Mrsjayy · 20/01/2020 14:47

Yes Lucille said as much to Sister J

FredaFrogspawn · 20/01/2020 16:55

Did people really speak in that clipped way all the time in the 50s? It's so twee and polite.

YouTube clips on life in 50s London, interviews with people and watch the film ‘Passport to Pimlico* - it’s all clipped - cockney and ‘upper class’ - and very funny these days!

Toddlerteaplease · 20/01/2020 19:37

Why didn't they call in the lady from a previous series who spoke Seleti?

Had to laugh at the discharge letters In triplicate. We did that till only a few years ago, and still do use the on occasion. The bottom copy is usually illegible!

Just wanted to say I still love Phyllis. Adore her. Want to be like her. Everything.

Don’t love dr turnip. Dislike him. Want him to emigrate. Byeee.

Do not wish ever for call dr Turner.

I would love a Better Call Phyllis.

Love Lucille too. Just not as much as I love Phyllis.

woodhill · 20/01/2020 21:33

Where's the 60s music.

They always used to have a pop song of the era playing

StillWeRise · 20/01/2020 23:01

Absolutely, and for a real challenge they could replace the appalling incidental music with appropriate contemporary music in the popular idiom. Beat music I think it's referred to as.

CoolCarrie · 20/01/2020 23:06

The actress who plays Phylis would be great as an older Queen in later series of The Crown, I would like to see her in it.

BeyondFlubeInclusionaryRF · 20/01/2020 23:07

Btw, I can’t wait for phylis and the receptionist to decide to move in together. I think they make a brilliant couple

Bluerussian · 20/01/2020 23:30

No, they both like their own space. At the moment Phyllis doesn't have it, she's part of a team at Nonnatus but when he is near retirement she'll sort out a place for herself and thoroughly enjoy an independent life.

She and the lady who runs Dr Turner's show are great.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 20/01/2020 23:42

I'd have thought Phyllis was very capable of assessing her herself without Dr Turner sitting outside chiming in!

They did used to use loads of era-appropriate music, which I miss.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 20/01/2020 23:42

They all had their legs out the other week too, for that tights competition. Grin

Squigean · 21/01/2020 06:46

Do you know what struck me when I watched it; it appears that it's absolutely impossible to have a program about women with just women as the leading characters.

There we have Dr Turner leading them and directing them despite them being capable. Really hiit home when Phyliss was explaining what might be wrong with the weewee lady and Dr Turner was also 'explaining' by repeating what phyllis had said.

Squigean · 21/01/2020 06:48

Did make me chuckle when people walked out in disgusted because of the mini-dresses.

enchantedspleen · 21/01/2020 07:00

I want Phyllis to be my midwife! I love watching her and how blooming amazing she is as a nurse and a person.

I was absolutely loving the fashion show, Trixie's dress was absolutely brilliant but I'm confused why she put a teacosy on her head... Grin

Snugglepiggy · 21/01/2020 07:51

Squigean -actually Dr Turner drives me nuts too but that's precisely why CTM is so evocative of that era because doctors would swoop in and everyone deferred to them. Even the most experienced competent midwife or nurse would stand to one a side at doctors rounds whilst they delivered their diagnosis or words of wisdom. Then after they left would crack on with reassuring and explaining -often necessary with the particularly pompous ones !

FredaFrogspawn · 21/01/2020 07:52

She’s right - even in the eighties that happened.

Squigean · 21/01/2020 07:57

Oh I know that Snugglepiggy. But it wasn't portrayed as him being a pompous knob. The whole having to write Turner into the storyline every fecking week is so awesome. Can't it just be about the midwives and district nursing!!

Squigean · 21/01/2020 07:59

Yawnsome. Not awesome!!

Gah that's some change the meaning auto predict!!!

DobbyLovesSocks · 21/01/2020 08:19

I caught up with CTM last night. I LOVE Phylis - such a great actress. And the scene between her and the receptionist regarding the boys records - hilarious.
Good wholesome family viewing - there's nowt else like it
