Yes, same actor - didn't mind him as a child but his adult acting skills could do with a bit of work! I suspect he does it for the money and has no intention of doing any other acting!

FredaFrogspawn · 06/01/2020 18:51

He’s worth the continuity! I’d rather a slightly wooden Timothy as we know him than some new RADA chap who clearly ISN’T Timothy!

newnameeeforthis · 06/01/2020 19:06

They must be running short on actresses- the mother last night was the same lady as the one with the bad teeth in the first episode that we met the dentist Mr Dockeral!

holdthefrontpage · 06/01/2020 19:25

Wasn't the mother last night Boo from Fleabag?

newnameeeforthis · 06/01/2020 19:49

I meant the mum who has the priests baby. But I have looked it up and I'm mistaken ! They just look a bit similar Whoops

Ginfordinner · 06/01/2020 19:50

I loved last night's episode.

And Diphtheria- thank goodness for vaccination

This should be compulsory viewing for anti vaxxers. I was born in 1958 and was vaccinated against diphtheria so never came across this illness. It looks pretty scary.

I guessed straight away that it was the priest BTW.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 06/01/2020 19:51

I thought both mothers looked familiar. But if they have their hair and clothes done by Wardrobe in a similar manner it's bound to happen.

supersop60 · 06/01/2020 20:13

Also - the diagnosis of aspirin and a day off school for german measles.

FredaFrogspawn · 06/01/2020 20:14

I wonder when the damage of German measles on early foetuses was known?

CaptainMyCaptain · 06/01/2020 20:21

I think it was known in the 60s but there wasn't a vaccine so you just hoped girls got it young and developed the immunity. The vaccine came out in the early 70s I think. I didn't get German Measles as a child and was too old to be offered the rubella vaccine but asked for it aged 18. I had to sign a form saying I wasn't pregnant.

june2007 · 06/01/2020 20:46

German measles is general mild though (think I had it twice and yes I am vaccinated. but then it was as a tean.) It,s if you get it in pregnancy that's the prob.

Ofcourse we all knew the priest was the dad think mother mildred did too.

Ginfordinner · 06/01/2020 21:12

I had German measles when I was about 8 or 9. I didn’t feel ill, and my mum was going to take me shopping. One of her friends had been a nurse and told her that I wasn’t to go out in public in case I infected an expectant mother. My mum didn’t know about the dangers of German measles back then. This would have been 1967/68. My mum was an intelligent, well read woman, so if she didn’t realise the dangers I don’t think it was common knowledge then.

I had the rubella vaccine when I was 13 (1972), even though I had already had German measles.

ineedaholidaynow · 06/01/2020 21:20

I don't know if I have missed it on here but who was in the photo that Fred was looking at?

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 06/01/2020 21:23

First wife who died in WW2 I think

FredaFrogspawn · 06/01/2020 21:25

Betty. A bomb killed her in the blitz.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 06/01/2020 21:48

Dangers of rubella to pregnant women definitely known by 1962 as a well-known book published in that year mentions it.

Loved the episode last night. Much better than the Christmas special.

GlitteryGracie · 06/01/2020 22:01

The advice for the sick children was "a day in front of the telly" would they have said that then? I mean I know it was around but fairly new and I didn't think they sat in front of it for hours like we do now? Hmm

FredaFrogspawn · 06/01/2020 22:08

Children’s telly was Watch with Mother for 15 minutes around lunch time and then from 3.15 (playschool, followed by Jackanory, the maybe two programmes, the magic roundabout and then the 5.45 news!)

You got the testcard or crossroads otherwise if I recall correctly.

ImNotWhoYouThinkIam · 06/01/2020 22:19

@NumbersStation

I just watched that episode and I am booing. Full on ugly crying. My heart is currently beyond splintered. But those words are so beautiful. Sad

Clawdy · 06/01/2020 22:32

Yes, I remember the book published in 1962 that mentioned the harmful effects of German measles on pregnant women, it was a very famous detective novel!

NumbersStation · 06/01/2020 23:41

@ImNotWhoYouThinkIam

I cried like a seal. I let so much pain out that night. I’ll make no apologies for it but that poem and Phyllis’s kind words after it have stayed with me since. Embedded in my brain. (Though I did love when she went back to brusque Phyllis and asked for the book back within a certain time)

I know there is a price to pay for love. But would I have missed out on that love given the choice of that love and heartbreak or no love at all? I’d take the love and eventual heartbreak every time.

Those words (and Phyllis’s too) have brought me comfort. I can’t explain it but they did. I hope it comforts you.

And I hope your broken heart is not beyond repair - mine is still splintered but not so jagged and I can remember my darling with smiles as well as tears.

You are in my thoughts. Flowers

ImNotWhoYouThinkIam · 06/01/2020 23:55

@NumbersStation

Thank you. My heart has been broken before. It healed then and will heal again.

It's a very comforting poem I think
Flowers and thoughts for you.

How would slim clearance of worked for private houses, particularly church property?
I live in East London and I’ve always presumed the church buildings remained, there’s lots of old churches here like little pockets between the houses.

UpsideRound · 09/01/2020 08:00

Slum clearance 😬
