Couldn't have loved it more tonight

Toddlerteaplease · 05/01/2020 21:26

Yes, I guessed straight away about the priest being the father. I had the same thought about the previous NH being condemned.

Wonderful tonight, so moving.

Pebble21uk · 05/01/2020 21:32

Sister Julienne mentioned 1-2 years for demolition - so perhaps there will be a series 10 as a last hurrah and end with them leaving Nonnatus?

Must admit I did enjoy tonight - don't know who wrote it but there were a couple of witty one-liners too!

CaptainMyCaptain · 05/01/2020 21:45

Did anyone else guess it was the priests baby as soon as it was mentioned she worked for one?
Yes, straight away.

FredaFrogspawn · 05/01/2020 21:48

I did initially then thought it was a done deal that it was the divorced husband’s child. So the revelation was a twist for me (I’m a bit slow sometimes).

WineOrGinOrBoth · 05/01/2020 22:05

Saw who the Father was a mile off.

Would they have been that sympathetic to an unmarried mum in those days?

Rockbird · 05/01/2020 22:16

It's been commissioned for series 10 and 11. Yes Nonnatus House was demolished at the end of the series 2 Christmas special.

Tigresswoods · 05/01/2020 22:27

Less teal this series, something of a red, white & blue theme instead. Anyone else notice that?

Loved the boy so keen to do the 11+ & the handing down of Timothy's blazer. Nice touches.

Yes, I'd no idea he was at boarding school, can't work out his age.

Squigean · 05/01/2020 23:17

Couldn't figure out the Boarding school thing either. Maybe it's a sixth form thing?

According to the CtM Fandom he's 17.

Squigean · 05/01/2020 23:21

Well it says 17 (as of season 8) and if I'm honest, I don't know what number season we're on now.

Bluerussian · 05/01/2020 23:28

Timothy left the grammar to go to sixth form at a boarding school. Bless him. I expect we'll see more of him in the hols, I really like him and the other children are gorgeous.

CaptainMyCaptain · 06/01/2020 08:34

Some would have or it would still be like that. Attitudes would soften gradually. My school friend's much older sister had a baby out of wedlock at about that time. Her parents paid a private investigator to find out who the father was and made him pay maintenance but she lived at home. Women were still sometimes being forced into giving babies up for adoption into the 1970s, though. As a single mother in 1980 I was asked if I was intending to keep my baby while I was in the delivery room.

SoupDragon · 06/01/2020 08:40

Oh yes. "I was housekeeper in the presbytery" = priest's child for me :)

Moreso in the mid 60s than in previous years and they were usually tolerant then. Society as a whole might not be completely tolerant but I think the midwives are more practical (in England - I know it wasn't the case elsewhere). I imagine there is some poetic license as they can't exactly condemn them because of the modern audience. This is a "feel good" programme rather than a documentary I guess and this explains their attitude towards homosexuals too.

CaptainMyCaptain · 06/01/2020 08:42

Midwives in that area, even the nuns, would have seen it all and be less judgemental than some. There are some awful things described in the original books.

WineOrGinOrBoth · 06/01/2020 09:13

The books were fascinating I thought.

holdthefrontpage · 06/01/2020 09:58

I'm loving the new soundtrack. Beach Boys? Yes please!

Though at the rate the series is moving through time, it'll be Britpop next week.

oldmum22 · 06/01/2020 10:41

Lovely episode last night. Guessed it was the priests baby as soon as the address was given . I think the priest might have pushed more for an adoption bearing in mind the scandal potential ,should the truth come out. Loved the tights competition . The diptheria outbreak was shocking, made me so glad for our modern day vaccinations.

I wonder if the actor doesn't want to be in it because of other commitments (acting / educational) so having him at boarding school means that they need limited involvement from him.

No bad thing IMO as he is an awful actor.

Rockbird · 06/01/2020 13:49

Max Macmillan who plays Timothy is at uni now and doesn't have the same availability as he did but he wants to stay in the show as much as he can hence shipping him off to boarding school.

Pebble21uk · 06/01/2020 18:33

If all his scenes are with a telephone receiver, I'm sure they could have been done in a small room somehwere in just a day or two!

FredaFrogspawn · 06/01/2020 18:35

Has he been Timothy throughout?

Rockbird · 06/01/2020 18:42

Yes since his first appearance in the first Christmas special.
