Always hated the way Trixie says "hart" and ""warth " instead of "hurt" and "worth". It sounds so over-the-top posh.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 01/01/2020 08:45

Trixie is very pragmatic as a midwife, in ways that belie her monied (if troubled) roots. However, taking a cocktail frock up to the Outer Hebrides seems just beyond out-of-touch with reality. It makes her look really frivolous. And even if one is a fashionista, would one really take such 'on-trend' items somewhere really cold, in the middle of winter, to the land that fashion has almost forgotten?

DoesntLeftoverTurkeySoupDragOn · 01/01/2020 09:09

I imagine one might if one had no idea what the Hebrides were like!

Mrsjayy · 01/01/2020 09:38

I agree Trixie has been ruined she is not that silly she knew she was going to work.

PlomBear · 01/01/2020 12:00

Chummy and Trixie are apparently based on real life people if you read the books. In the books, Trixie married a diplomat. Obviously the series has veered away from that!

Although nobody has come forward to say they are the Chummy or Trixie, perhaps they are amalgamations of several people.

www.radiotimes.com/news/2012-02-19/did-call-the-midwifes-chummy-exist/amp/

The East End in the books is a much darker and grittier place too.

ConfCall · 01/01/2020 14:47

Jenny Worth apparently wanted Miranda Hart for the Chummy role, because she reminded her of the real-life one.

Something Phyllis Crane said gave me some comfort when my heart was broken beyond repair.

I know CTM can be twee, and I’m terribly cynical and battle worn but I’ve clung to what she quoted in some of my darkest days.

I think she is played beautifully.

FlamingoAndJohn · 01/01/2020 19:04

CTM is as twee as all fuck but I cry from beginning to end as it’s all about women helping women as they have done since the beginning of time. There is a link going back to before recorded history.

Mrsjayy · 01/01/2020 19:04

Ah @Numbersstation that is lovely Phyllis is a legend and I think she is supposed to "touch us" I love her too ☺

Bluerussian · 01/01/2020 19:22

I agree about Phyllis, she is a really good character, one of my favourites. I'm glad you found comfort in what she quoted.

Most of the series (all series) have been insightful and it's good from a historical perspective too. I'm just seventy and was a child in the 1950s, remember a lot of what is covered in CTM.

It's a shame so many are cynical about Trixie! I think she is delightful and I knew girls like her when I was young - like most of them actually. She has more depth than one would imagine on first acquaintance and that has been portrayed well. I'm looking forward to the new series to see how her character is developed. Helen George is lovely.

NumbersStation · 01/01/2020 19:23

Thank you @Mrsjayy

She quoted this poem by Federico Garcia Lorca

It's True

Ay, the pain it costs me
to love you as I love you!

For love of you, the air, it hurts,
and my heart,
and my hat, they hurt me.

Who would buy it from me,
this ribbon I am holding,
and this sadness of cotton,
white, for making hankerchiefs with?

Ay, the pain it costs me
to love you as I love you!

After, she said ‘and if I may, the pain it costs, to love, I believe it is always worth it’

I will never forget that. When my heart starts to splinter again, it is all relative to the beautiful and unconditional love I knew.

And I know I can love really. I might not manage it again but I did love. I really did.

flapjackfairy · 01/01/2020 20:24

Blimey @NumbersStation l am welling up ! Sorry for your pain x

Toddlerteaplease · 02/01/2020 15:32

Going against the grain here, I am
Not a huge fan of Phyllis. Would like to see more of Sr Julienne instead as she's supposed to be in charge.

It's difficult to see more of everyone :o

I like Phyllis. She can be brusque and i sdeeply practical but also very caring and wise. Like the conversation she had with Effie about being illegitimate. She is probably exactly the right person to have around you in a crisis. Trixie is the same, although she is flighty and shallow rather than brusque. She is still very good in a crisis.

Robin2323 · 05/01/2020 10:02

Saw this yesterday thought it was lovely.

Pebble21uk · 05/01/2020 11:32

New series starts tonight!
I still watch for the nostalgia, but end up just picking holes in everything. I think it's definitely had its day now.
This is series 9 I think... does anybody know if it's already had a series 10 comissioned?
The viewing figures for the Christmas episode were probably dissappointing for them. It's usually in the top 5 Christmas Day programmes - it was Number 6 this year with 5.2 million viewers as opposed to 5.5 last year and over 6 the year before that (yes, I did check - been ill... too much time on my hands!!!)

Mrsjayy · 05/01/2020 12:06

Yes I'm looking forward to the new series .

WineOrGinOrBoth · 05/01/2020 13:34

I remember the nightie adverts - both in the 60’s. It was a very real threat. We weren’t allowed into the living room if the fire was lit without an adult.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 05/01/2020 13:53

I would have thought that they'd want to reach the ten seasons milestone, wouldn't you?

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 05/01/2020 21:17

SPOILER alert for tonight's episode

I thought they moved Nonnatus House in one of the early seasons after it was condemned

And secondly... Did anyone else guess it was the priests baby as soon as it was mentioned she worked for one?

And Diphtheria- thank goodness for vaccination.

FlamingoAndJohn · 05/01/2020 21:21

I bloody loved tonight’s episode.
It all went on.
