Old thread

Ten points to DarlingNikita who spotted my deliberate mistake - I meant, of course, "cutting the judges' comments to make it LOOK as though they are sending home the wrong people." Ahem.

Dire not sure

highheelsandwitcheshats · 30/10/2019 11:06

David MADE his tablecloth. That's the attention to detail.

thecatsthecats · 30/10/2019 12:34

Multiple second places in the technical isn't something to be ignored. First place changed all the time, he was always there at the top.

Yes! His technicals may never have won, but to always pretty much nail the brief showed a very broad range of ability.

It's such a shame that accepting criticism, working on his errors, a high degree of consistency and having a calm demeanour is so underrated on this thread!

Limer · 30/10/2019 12:41

David thoroughly deserved his win. He was head and shoulders above the other two by the end.

DarlingNikita · 30/10/2019 13:06

Poor Steff just had a bad day. I think she had a tough time, as her mum hinted, beyond just not knowing what to do with her life; her emotions often seemed very close to the surface. Noel was very kind to her.

I didn't like smug David but I have to say he played a blinder on the day.

Alice's parents were fucking weird.

CaptainMyCaptain · 30/10/2019 13:11

I don't think David was smug, I'd say he was calm and level headed.

missyB1 · 30/10/2019 13:12

I didn’t think David was ever smug. He was just quietly confident and very focused. He didn’t get emotional because he knew it was only bloody baking! When I was a nurse he would have been exactly the kind of colleague I loved working with, calm, professional and unflappable in a crisis. I truly believe those qualities helped him win the bake off.

Acciocats · 30/10/2019 13:23

‘It's such a shame that accepting criticism, working on his errors, a high degree of consistency and having a calm demeanour is so underrated on this thread!’

Completely agree with the above

It’s a shame that so many tv shows involving the public are dominated by the fame hungry, or those with a sob story or who are baring their emotions every 2 minutes.

I couldn’t see anything smug about David- he was just very focused and unflappable. He took criticism without sighing, crying or looking like a kicked puppy. It felt like he actually acted on feedback, rather than smiling smugly when he did well and dissolving into tears whenever he was criticised. He just got on with the job.
Back in the real world those are the sort of qualities you want from someone, particularly someone in a demanding profession. Good to see a TV show where ultimately those qualities won through rather than the most histrionic contestant getting the accolades

highheelsandwitcheshats · 30/10/2019 13:28

Basically all of @acciocats post.

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 30/10/2019 13:30

I liked Steff. I didn't particularly warm to Alice (she reminded me a bit of a capable head girl, and made me feel a bit inadequate!) But her showstopper was ace. David was consistent and I am pleased he won, once I realised Steff had blown it.

Lunde · 30/10/2019 13:35

We have seen many times in the past that the "favourite" doesn't produce their best work under the pressure of thefinal,

In series 5 - Richard with the pencil was the huge favourite having been star baker 5 times but didn't win.

Ian (series 6) and Ruby (series 4), James (series 3), Steven (series 8) were all 3 time star bakers that didn't win!

slipperywhensparticus · 30/10/2019 13:37

He blew everyone out of the water in the final I think he deserved to win I'm glad they showed them hugging the girls when they got upset it makes it feel more human? Confused

WheresThatCatGoneNow · 30/10/2019 13:52

David's boyfriend looks nice, doesn't he? They seem very well matched, I think.

Hope they are very happy now they've moved in together 🤗

highheelsandwitcheshats · 30/10/2019 16:00

I'm still bitter about Steven not winning. I think he was better overall and on the day.

Ginfordinner · 30/10/2019 16:38

I didn’t think David was ever smug

Neither did I

DarlingNikita · 30/10/2019 17:14

I thought his face and manner were very smug

wowfudge · 30/10/2019 18:05

Not smug at all. Just not a drama queen and not given as much airtime as some of the others.

Acciocats · 30/10/2019 19:08

Today 18:05 wowfudge

Not smug at all. Just not a drama queen and not given as much airtime as some of the others.

Precisely. I think the viewing public have become used to the over emotional responses, with some contestants being unable to accept positive feedback without displaying self effacing faux modesty and unable to accept negative feedback without dissolving into tears.

David just seemed refreshingly honest , not going all coy when he was praised, but just accepting the positives, and not looking like a kicked puppy when he was criticised, but just acknowledging and acting on it.

DarlingNikita · 30/10/2019 19:09

again. What can I say? It was my personal perception of him.

WeshMaGueule · 30/10/2019 19:15

The man trained third-world midwives. He is a fucking HERO.

wowfudge · 30/10/2019 20:06

Well, if I may be so bold, your perception was off.

CaptainMyCaptain · 30/10/2019 22:55

So he's not with Michael then. Shame, that was a lovely photo.

highheelsandweathercocks · 31/10/2019 00:37

What a lovely, well written article.

Rhubarbisevil · 31/10/2019 06:34

Henry is adorable!
