Old thread

Ten points to DarlingNikita who spotted my deliberate mistake - I meant, of course, "cutting the judges' comments to make it LOOK as though they are sending home the wrong people." Ahem.

That is a totally shit result.
Rosie did NOT deserve to go - it should have been Micheal.
Grrrr.

CaptainMyCaptain · 22/10/2019 21:19

Michael has already gone. You mean David. I think David or Alice should have gone.

FawnDrench · 22/10/2019 21:22

Sorry - yes I meant David - am so pissed off I'm getting them all mixed up!
Double grrr.

SanFranBear · 22/10/2019 21:23

I'm confused as to how Alice won Star Baker but perhaps, as they were a little shite, that was the best choice? But she was 4th in the technical and Rosie, who was first, went home? Imo, the technical is where you find out whether they can bake or not... it all seems about the Showstopper now - the other two rounds seem to mean nothing.

Boo - and I am starting to really dislike Noel, he's probably lovely but I don't think he suits the show at all. Like Sandi though...

I am away next week so not sure if I'll be able to watch but if I can, I will... it a surely Steff for the win though!

OkayGoooouuuuuullllll · 22/10/2019 21:24

It’s a shame isn’t it because Rosie did well in the first task, then won the technical. Alice had some not nice things said about her tarts, burnt her caramel and had other things wrong, and her showstopper was good but the glass wasn’t see through.

NigesFakeWalkingStick · 22/10/2019 21:32

Okay so didn't see it after technical but how TF did Alice win star baker?! Rosie going home seems mystifying as well, did she have a rotten showstopper?

Lessthanzero · 22/10/2019 21:38

Does anyone know if the bakers get help. It seems like the stuff they are doing is so complex and niech, they must get a training class and some ideas given to them.

I mean that glass thing, they must have been shown how to do that. There was another week, can't remember what it was but they were asked to make something really weird and they all made variations of two things.

Also do they get given money to buy ingredients to practise?

OkayGoooouuuuuullllll · 22/10/2019 21:41

Nige - I didn’t think it was that bad but then I didn’t taste it. She did several different types of patisserie and they said they were a bit boring and it wasn’t very showstopper like. She had tried to do a few different patisserie bits and it looked very tasty to me - the rest did big cakes essentially.

OkayGoooouuuuuullllll · 22/10/2019 21:43

Lessthan I would love to know this too. I’ve been disappointed this series with how many times we’ve heard ‘I’ve never made ’

TragicallyUnbeyachted · 22/10/2019 23:04

Lessthan I suspect they all Google and get much the same results (also isomalt isn't hard to work with and is far far easier than actual sugar. I have successfully made things out of isomalt and believe me that's a pretty low bar).

Rosie's showstopper was all beige and allegedly didn't taste of anything. I think of they'd liked the taste of Rosie's then David would have gone on the grounds of lack of ambition.

I am easygoing and like everyone but I would like to see Henry's hypothetical spinoff show more than anyone else's.

I'm surprised Rosie went I was betting on Alice. Glad Steff is through to the final

HeddaGarbled · 22/10/2019 23:12

I think there was probably an element of not wanting to give Steff star baker every week, though if she doesn’t win the final, I will be very surprised. I did think Alice’s cake looked beautiful.

ittooshallpass · 22/10/2019 23:14

Can anyone else not understand a word Rosie says? I have to rewind her bits so many times... and I still can’t catch what she says 🤷‍♀️

Mner2019 · 23/10/2019 00:05

I realised at the start that Rosie was the only one left who i liked. She was bound to go... Not bothered who wins now...

Getting bored of the jokes. Yes we know sandi is short. Paul is an arse, prue has eclectic necklaces... They are totally underusing Sandi.

Graphista · 23/10/2019 00:39

I am SO behind. Been very sick with a virus so didn’t feel up to even new episodes of bake off as concentration poor and kept dozing off!

So now I’m playing catch-up...

Ok almost caught up.

I liked Henry and was sad to see him go I was also sad to see Phil go but generally speaking there’s been a real lack of personality this year and I agree with many pps that is down to a lack of diversity in age and background, when there’s more diversity in the contestants the individual personalities come out more I think.

I liked Rosie well enough but technically she was struggling. I’ve not liked Alice or David from the beginning both too smug and anything they’ve said along self deprecating lines just doesn’t seem sincere.

Steff I’ve liked from the beginning I disagree she’s no humour she’s a very dark, dry humour and I believe her self deprecation. Some of you saying she must know she’s good but I wonder if she has someone in her life away from bake off who’s EXTREMELY good possibly even professional who she’s comparing herself to in her head? I think that might be where it’s coming from and a few weeks doing well on bake off won’t necessarily undo lifelong under confidence.

I know of 2 sisters who both bake, one is a professional and produces stunning creations but the other while not at the same level still produces wonderful cakes for family and friends, and is praised for doing so, but is in her head not that good because they’re not at the level of her sister - but the sister has had training and does it all day every day so loads of practice too.

Just my ha’porth anyway. Can’t believe it’s the final nearly!

TragicallyUnbeyachted · 23/10/2019 07:46

Also do they get given money to buy ingredients to practise?

No. Someone from Season 2 used to have a blog and was very explicit about that. The stuff you use on camera they provide (if it's a standard ingredient) or pay for (if it's more unusual) but anything for practice bakes is your responsibility.

OkayGoooouuuuuullllll · 23/10/2019 08:05

Possibly Graphista. I have chronic low self esteem so whenever someone says I've done something good I sort of laugh and say oh no.

I was brought up by a dad who called me stupid and compared me to my (very academic) siblings when I was artistic instead. I struggle in my head to accept anything I do could be good.

That said, I wouldn't have the balls to apply to bake off or a similar programme like portrait artist etc. It wouldn't even occur to me to do that so she must have a bit of confidence :)

ittooshallpass · 23/10/2019 09:04

I really thought they were editing it to make Rosie look bad... and then save her at the end. I was really surprised she went. I guess her showstopper was just too bad for her to get through. It didn’t look or taste good. If she’d got the taste right she would have gone through. David’s wasn’t right but it tasted good.

As a pp said; the diversity of competitors just wasn’t there this year. It’s been a very mediocre series.

ittooshallpass · 23/10/2019 09:07

I’m on team Steff. IMHO David shouldn’t be in the final and I really don’t want Alice and her flicky hair to win (I wouldn’t want to eat anything she makes as I’m sure it’ll have hair in it Confused)

Limer · 23/10/2019 09:08

I like Sandi & Noel, I like Prue, I like Paul (but also hate him in a pantomime villain sort of way).

Why does Steph wear a necklace saying Steffi (although she didn't have it on this week)? Have they spelt her name wrong and she's never mentioned it?

ppeatfruit · 23/10/2019 09:15

Did anyone hear PH saying that Prue's technical was diabetes on a plate !!! He can't talk.

I missed the end, so Rosie went and Alice got SB !!!! Really????

Lessthanzero · 23/10/2019 09:48

No. Someone from Season 2 used to have a blog and was very explicit about that. The stuff you use on camera they provide (if it's a standard ingredient) or pay for (if it's more unusual) but anything for practice bakes is your responsibility.

Surely that means the less well off the bakers are at a disadvantage to the more well off bakers. Some wouldn't be able to afford to buy lots of tools and ingredients to do the more technical stuff.

Like the girl that did the starfish she's just bought a mold and filled it with chocolate. But it looked good. How much money must they have spent buying chocolate practising the mirror glaze.

ppeatfruit · 23/10/2019 10:01

Yes they'd have to be quite wealthy ,unless they still live with their parents who aren't poor and are cooks I suppose.

DarlingNikita · 23/10/2019 10:03

David get criticized för his layer cake being .. well.. cakey - while Steff gets praised for her layer cake
Yeah, weird Confused The only difference I could see was that Steff made some macarons to go on it.

I'm sad Rosie's gone and baffled about Alice getting star baker when her sugar window was so opaque and rickety and her technical such a mess.

I want Steff to win now.

ppeatfruit · 23/10/2019 10:20

Yes Nikita and she used a chocolate mirror icing, twas pretty with it's glass frame though. I live near quite a few real Fr. patisseries they sell cakes !!!!!!!
