Old thread

Ten points to DarlingNikita who spotted my deliberate mistake - I meant, of course, "cutting the judges' comments to make it LOOK as though they are sending home the wrong people." Ahem.

I've been very sad to see Michael and now Henry go. Loved both of them and their very sweet group huggy friendship with David. I'm not too bothered about the women - the vet has a very weird voice and Alice is like a startled deer (though quite sweet really). I'd rather Steff didnt win star baker all the time or win the series - I like it when you're kept guessing up to the end as it could be anyone of a few of them. This year only David is giving Steff any real competition. Plus I agree Steff is not interesting TV at all.

I agree about Noel. Was not convinced at all about him when they announced him as a presenter but actually he's great and has some lovely moments with the bakers - genuinely funny, warm and supportive. Loved his goth-off with Helena. I find Sandi painful and the set pieces with her and Noel aren't good either. And as others have said I'm sorry there isn't more balance between Paul and Prue - I wish she was more authoritive in her judgements. But I do like how they constantly take the piss out of Paul. He deserves it, the old sleaze bag.

wowfudge · 17/10/2019 07:36

No - I mean accusing her of false modesty was unfair and unkind.

willywillywillywilly · 17/10/2019 12:58

@Whitney168 I agree - Paul just looks like a total twat lurking around glaring.

I love Steff and also David. I hope they both win somehow, like the Booker Prize. Also I would like a dragon shaped pie please.

willywillywillywilly · 17/10/2019 13:00

Yes, I love Noel but he and Sandi have absolutely shit banter. I'd love Jo Brand to be there instead of her (or Mel).

Bouledeneige · 17/10/2019 20:54

I also liked Mel G way more than Sue Perkins. Warm and funny.

Wolfcub · 17/10/2019 21:41

Noooo Sue is the best

ageingdisgracefully · 18/10/2019 06:49

Can't bear Sue Perkins.

ppeatfruit · 18/10/2019 07:54

I like them both, especially because they told the director \producers to not film the contestants crying in front of the cameras . I notice that the people in Channel 4 don't have the same sensitivity.

DarlingNikita · 18/10/2019 14:15

I liked Mel and Sue together. I really enjoy Sue's more recent travel shows, but I do think Mel was particularly warm and funny with Bake Off people.

ArseDarkly · 18/10/2019 14:34

When do they have the Professionals show? I like that much more these days - really love Benoit and Cherish and always dramatic to see how even the most accomplished bakers can have a 'mare under the right/wrong circumstances

BooseysMom · 18/10/2019 14:35

Funny you should say this as i have almost guiltily been thinking the same lately. Sandi is a great natural comedian, as is Noel, but there are times when the clips are almost forced funny. Noel is fantastic just being Noel. Him and Sandi together?..not so sure Hmm

DarlingNikita · 18/10/2019 15:30

I think they're both good when they're spontaneous, but the scripted 'comedy' bits don't do either of them any favours.

ppeatfruit · 19/10/2019 08:42

Arse It's on (or has been , I don't know if it's just finished) I don't like it much it's just soooo fantastical and the contestants are so stressed they make the B.O look like a picnic!!

MrsGrindah · 19/10/2019 12:35

I don’t think it’s unkind to say I think Steph is being falsely modest. She knows she’s doing well.

ppeatfruit · 19/10/2019 12:43

It's true Mrs She's an odd mixture; her body language shows a lack of confidence, but her cooking is assured (beyond her years) apart from the strange 'brick' pastry! She's very good with flavours.

GeneHuntLover · 19/10/2019 13:44

I miss Mary, Mel and Sue, I miss the little history segments, I miss the nice mix of bakers, I miss Sue saying "bake" in silly voices each time, I miss the Mel & Sue sandwich at the end of each episode, I miss the Mirandas, the Brendans, the Nancys and the Richards.

Not liking the new format, Noel and Sandie or Prue, the contestants or the so-called bakes, and the ad breaks

Me too!!!

ArseDarkly · 19/10/2019 14:02

Whaat? I missed it ppeat? How the hell did I manage that Confused. It is stressful but I like that concentration and respect for the food - I don't get much sense of that from bake-off anymore, it's too trivial, too arbitrary and a lot of the stuff they're asked to do looks pretty inedible.

ArseDarkly · 19/10/2019 14:05

Also I like Liam and Tom far more than Noel and Sandi. Actually, Liam would probably make a good judge for non-professional bake-off, he's got a really nice way about him and is a graduate of the school!

DontLettuceBrexitLettuceRomain · 19/10/2019 16:41

I don't understand how Rosie is still here. No way should she have survived over Henry, or Michael - barely even over Priya!

Starksforthewin · 20/10/2019 02:34

Oh I hated Mel and Sue! Both so annoying. Standing too close to the contestants and Mel always trying to steal some of the ingredients. I found their double entendres to be sad and pathetic, especially when they were accompanied by Mel’s ‘knowing’ looks to camera.

I think Noel and Sandi have a much more chilled, unobtrusive way of presenting. Hollywood’s ego is out of control and it’s a pity he is still on the show. I like Prue.

This year’s contestants haven’t really caught my interest. I hope next year they go back to a more diverse mixture of ages and traditional home bakers. The show wasn’t really set up for the Instagram generation, in my view.

ageingdisgracefully · 20/10/2019 08:15

I too really disliked Mel and Sue-particularly Sue. I dislike her on other things too, not just GBBO.

Sandi and Noel are both excellent comedians in their own right. But somehow, I don't think it's working with most of the contestants.

Henry was funny, Rosie is funny and a couple of the others maybe, but Steph and Alice don't seem to have a sense of humour at all.

Tom Allen in that tent would be an absolute scream however....

CaptainMyCaptain · 20/10/2019 09:49

Tom Allen in that tent would be an absolute scream however....
Please C4, do that.

ppeatfruit · 20/10/2019 11:07

No he's funny for short stretches in ITT but not ALL of the BO, he's too sarky and rude.

FreeBedForFlys · 20/10/2019 11:13

Steph is a good baker but has absolutely no discernible personality whatsoever.
