Finally got round to watching this, quite enjoying so far although I struggled with the accents initially.
However Tom Hardy who I usually like is driving me mad, he seems so hammy and channelling his Bronson character mated with the Krays a bit too much.
Does he get better?

He is very easy on the eye

BigcatLittlecat · 26/08/2019 22:14

He's just beautiful!

Haggisfish · 26/08/2019 22:16

But I only like him in this-it’s tommy I love, not cillian!

pinkunicornsparkles · 26/08/2019 22:51

Im not sure if it's just because the last series was a while ago but am I right thinking the hair cuts are harsher this series?

whenskiesaregrey · 27/08/2019 05:04

I'm loving this series up to now. In love with Tommy Shelby and his cheekbones.

So, do we think Michael is out to topple Tommy? I think that might be recurring theme throughout.

Yaflamingalah · 27/08/2019 07:08

I thought that but I have to say that as Tommy’s hair is a bit longer he looks thoroughly sexy when it’s all tousled

mrscampbellblackagain · 27/08/2019 07:12

I don't trust Michael at all and he is definitely Polly's weak spot.

How cutting was Tommy to Lizzie about how he still pays for it in his head!

Samcro · 27/08/2019 07:14

gone off Lizzie.
what did Tommy say to micheal about the baby witnessing?

pinkunicornsparkles · 27/08/2019 07:14

I don't think Michael is the 'black cat', it just seems too obvious? I'm currently wondering if it's Finn or his friend...

scarecrowhead · 27/08/2019 08:24

Don't like Michael but not sure if he's the black cat. Finn and Jeremiah were with Aberama when they went to Chinatown so would they know where he camped ? Wouldn't be Jonny dog's as he's too loyal. Don't trust Linda or Lizzy.

Yaflamingalah · 27/08/2019 08:31

I have my suspicions about Finn this series.

I also didn't understand the comment about Michael's unborn baby being witness and Michael's reaction.

scarecrowhead · 27/08/2019 08:35

I think it was something like 'swear on your baby's life' and Tommy was threatening the baby if Michael was lying.

pinkunicornsparkles · 27/08/2019 08:42

@scarecrowhead I think that but think it's also a sort of curse. So he's 'cursed' the baby incase Michael doesn't live up to his promises.

Samcro · 27/08/2019 09:32

ahh that makes sense.
never been keen on Michael

taytosandwich · 27/08/2019 10:15

All the women are annoying. Actually all the men are annoying too, except Tommy and Johnny Dogs. Tommy gave his best 'you're going to fucking pay for this audacity' face when Michaels wife was so cheeky to him! She's fucked.

mrscampbellblackagain · 27/08/2019 12:18

I like Polly and Ada but the rest - hmmm. And Michael's wife - well I agree she will pay for that 'you need to help your cousin' comment.

I also thought the comment about the unborn baby was a gypsy curse - as in, if you are telling lies then your baby will be cursed.

mrscampbellblackagain · 27/08/2019 12:19

I do love Arthur I must say

Craftycorvid · 27/08/2019 12:34

Very late to the PB party. DH has decided he likes it. I’m struggling with the characters swearing at one another through a thick fog and the unnecessarily elaborate modes for offing people (or are some of them dream sequences?!). Where did the IRA/mafia types get time to practise their team song? Is it not a bit revealing of their whereabouts and plans to have a team song? Who got to carry the cross? Confused

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 27/08/2019 12:49

OP if you think Tom Hardy was hard to watch, you're going to need to skip every episode (s4?) with Adrien Brody as Luca Changretta in.

Toe curling!

mrscampbellblackagain · 27/08/2019 12:54

The Billy Boys song is a real thing apparently. Still sung in some places today.

Thymeout · 27/08/2019 12:58

The IRA has featured before. One of the reasons I like PB is the links with contemporary history. The Irish connection started with Churchill, Home Secretary, bringing over a Belfast Protestant policeman to sort out problems in Birmingham. Lots of twists and turns but TS eventually ends up with Churchill owing him favours, which he exploits to his advantage. He also marries Grace, whose father was killed by the IRA and is acting as a Protestant agent in revenge.

But this is the first time we've met the Protestant terrorist branch. Their entrance was absolutely chilling. They still sing that song in Glasgow. My dd was once chased for wearing a green t-shirt.

Craftycorvid · 27/08/2019 14:24

Thanks for the information about the song. I assume, then, that the ‘Billy’ is King William?

Thymeout · 27/08/2019 17:35

Yes - that's what I thought, but there's been some discussion on-line about the origins of the UVF, which was founded by a man called Billy. There's an argument going on about whether Mosley used them as security at his meetings. The Blue Shirts. The Guardian online has a review with open comments today. Worth having a look.

My English dd went to Glasgow University and shared a flat with some Protestants from Belfast. This was before the GFA. She knows all the words. There's another one 'Do you want a fish supper, Bobby Sands?' (Hunger striker.) I think they originate on the football stands. Glasgow is v sectarian. Someone told me that the green cross pharmacy sign has to be a red cross in Protestant areas - but it might be an urban myth.

HiHoToffee · 27/08/2019 18:48

I have been watching from the start and series 5 is looking great.

Tommy might well turn out to be his own black cat, I can imagine Michael being used as a black cat without realising but Finn will be more like a Mosley blackshirt imo.

youngestisapsycho · 27/08/2019 19:43

the woman that called Tommy, she was holding Michael... anyone know the actress was? Can’t find anything in IMdB....
