So happy Badison was moved near the start.

Morello’s baby and Red’s dementia was so sad but Doggett dying was just awful. I cried and then proper cried when Taystee saw her certificate for passing the exam Sad

The whole ICE shitty situation. Just awful.

God that was a hard series to watch, it was so heartbreaking at so many points.

I can’t remember who asked but Lorna is in for putting an explosive device under that guy’s girlfriend’s car, she was obsessed with him. I had a feeling her mental health would fall apart in the last series, particularly when moved to max.

Karla storyline was devastating, and the lady who had been raped trying to get into the US. Red didn’t deserve dementia. Doggett was tragic. The courtroom full of kids made me gasp out loud Sad

I’m so glad they did use their platform to highlight the current state of things in the US re ICE- but I’m also glad there was a softer ending! So many inmates in Ohio, and Pornstache raising Daya’s baby even though he knew she wasn’t his.

Yeah I thought it was strange that lorna was told in such a uncaring way her baby died, but maybe that’s a flaw of the system. They don’t care about these women. That’s how I looked at it.

RuffleCrow · 01/08/2019 14:44

I've found my people.

Just in floods of tears watching the final episode.

I think the things that got me the most were the whole ICE storyline (the children/ Carla especially) Taystee's injustice/ heartbreak/ redemption, Pennsatucky's sudden death, seeing beautiful Poussey again in flashback. Sad

Other things thay struck me: how many characters just shouldn't have been there - at least not for that length of time. Maria did some very petty counterfeit sales and not only lost out on her baby's first year of life but took such a brutal nosedive in prison just to survive and it nearly killed her. Blanca started the show with this almost demonic reputation and persona but it turns out that was just what she had to construct to survive taking the flack for someone else's crime. What did Cindy even do to end up there?

As for Nicky, who i also love most of all, Star it actually broke my heart a little to see her settling in to that Red role. What had she even done to be given time in the first place? Some petty drug dealing and prostitution? Was there some criminal damage too? Either way it just seemed like she was just resigned by the end - maybe because there was nobody for her on the outside or the inside. Seeing Natasha Lyonne in tears in the outtakes at the end just did me in. She puts so much of herself into her roles, it seems. Sad

Xyzzzzz · 01/08/2019 14:57

I never liked Maria. Hard to believe that her daughter might not even be her partners!

Cindy I think was in for theft. When she worked for TSA she used to steal things

SallyCinnamon3009 · 01/08/2019 15:23

Can anyone remember why Daya was there in the first place? Was it something to do with drugs and her mum? I feel like I really need to rewatch from the beginning

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 01/08/2019 15:36

The show really changed through the seasons. There was a lot of nudity and sex at the beginning, that was gone in the last seasons.

How many years did they represent? One of the seasons was just the few days of the riot, but how long was the whole period they covered?

HeyAssbutt · 01/08/2019 15:57

I felt sorry for Maria at the start but then she turned really nasty. Think I will rewatch from the start now it's all finished.

Pipers sentence was 18 months altogether I think so seasons 1-6 was only that long. Such a mind fuck when I first watched it because I'm used to seasons being a year long.

RuffleCrow · 01/08/2019 16:05

I think that's what i mean about Maria - she could well have ended up being someone who left prison 50 times worse than she entered it. I think her unlikeability stems from a hardness she had to construct to survive in the beginning. Yes she cheated on her daughter's dad, and sold fake clothes before she went inside but that's hardly comparable to what she turned into by season 6. You could see she was really trying to change by s7 though.

RuffleCrow · 01/08/2019 17:02

Forgot to say I thought Aleida's back story, when it finally came out, was one of the most heart-wrenching, yet sadly also one of the most realistic. I think the sudden unexpected admission of her being 37 at the end was deliberate too - i had also assumed she was in her late forties until that point. It's not so much that the actress looks much older than her years - i think it's a combination of dated clothes, hair and makeup and having a daughter in her mid twenties. I felt quite distraught when i realised that Daya would have been born when Aleida was maybe 13 - as a result of CSE. And my next thought was "and that's exactly the kind of appalling start in life which makes women end up in prison - why am i shocked?" And then the realisation that by her own standards, despite everything she put Daya through, she was actually being a pretty good mother Sad

themouldneverbotheredmeanyway · 01/08/2019 17:22

how many characters just shouldn't have been there

A criticism I read in reviews of season 1 was that lots of the characters were in for violent crime, whereas in reality a high proportion of women in US prisons are there for nonviolent crimes. So I think they tried to redress this in later seasons.

It absolutely seemed very easy to get time added to your sentence once you were there, for doing things to get by in prison. So an initially short sentence could be extended and extended.

SallyCinnamon3009 · 01/08/2019 17:25

Yeah I found that bit sad too when she was with her mother in the bar. It made my skin crawl

Xyzzzzz · 01/08/2019 17:35

I’ve posted that Aleida and her kids are stuck in a cycle and it’s sad...but it’s quite common unfortunately.

From looking at her flashback she never stood a chance and I think she was a product of her environment and never gave Daya a chance. But now she’s realised and let’s be honest it’s far too late. Her kids are too far gone.

SallyCinnamon3009 · 01/08/2019 20:13

Just started rewatching 😃

Andylion · 01/08/2019 20:21

I wonder if some of the blame can go to Vinnie. He doesn't seem to be the swiftest canoe on river.

Xyzzzzz · 01/08/2019 21:28

Yeah it was all very rush rush their wedding

Namechange3007 · 01/08/2019 21:49

On episode 11. Gutted for Cindy.

RuffleCrow · 01/08/2019 22:13

I think Vinnie's reasonably intelligent and emotionally aware. Just not quite Nicky-level IQ or EQ which is what you really need to deal with someone that complex and fragile. Maybe he just wanted to tell Lorna in person rather than having it come from one of the godawful guards.

On the subject of Lorna - found a clip of Yael Stone speaking in her natural Aussie accent. Totally surreal - she just looks so much more New Jersey than Australian somehow and her Nu Joisy accent is flawless. So many amazingly talented actresses in one show - I feel so glad to have come across it when i did - it's seen me through 5 of the toughest years of my life.

colourlessgreenidea · 02/08/2019 11:53

On episode 11. Gutted for Cindy.

I honestly can’t feel any sympathy for Cindy at all. What she did to Taystee was unforgivable Sad. She could have received a death penalty!

Xyzzzzz · 02/08/2019 13:54

I love Taystee and was gutted when she lost her appeal last season, more so cause we as a viewer know she is innocent.

I’m glad she ended with a way of helping people even thought she won’t be free. She was very smart and actually wanted a job and to rejoin society as a functioning member. Such a shame, again she was a victim of her circumstances.

Namechange3007 · 02/08/2019 14:20

I know!! It was awful! But still felt gutted for her!

themouldneverbotheredmeanyway · 02/08/2019 16:27

Cindy at all. What she did to Taystee was unforgivable

Can someone remind me what Cindy said at Taystee's trial and why? I can't remember and the recap didn't cover it very well.

Did the guards shoot Piscatella on purpose or by accident? What happened to those guards?

CaptainHammer · 02/08/2019 16:36

I think Cindy said she only had the gun briefly after she took it from T. She then has to either save her self or say it was Taystee. She knows they won’t believe it was the police guy that really killed

The nervous new police guy shot Piscatella by accident and they covered it up. Nothing happened to them as Taystee was blamed.

OP posts:
HeyAssbutt · 02/08/2019 17:20

Didn't Cindy say something like she saw taystee holding a gun to piscatella's head (which she did)

CaptainHammer · 02/08/2019 21:47

Yea something like that. She tried to say she wasn’t there at all at first but then her prints were discovered on the gun so had to say something. She had that bad back pain throughout the series because of the guilt. Oh and she did go to tell Taystee but then told her she had a daughter instead. She then asked her lawyer to change her statement as she felt so awful about it but he said they wouldn’t believe her now and she’d end up with loads more time on her sentence instead.
It’s all coming back to me now!
