I too am confused. But then I find it hard to concentrate on.
And that's because the writing seems to be some sort of cliched representation of the "modern" woman. Juggling job and families, and I hate to say it the stupitidy of the shoes. I very much doubt a serious female Barrister would wear shoes like that. Its dumb enough to be pressurised into thinking it is glamourous for a night out.
In fact it makes her look totally lacking in autonomy. Society says I should wear silly shoes. Advertising tells me I should swill large glasses of wine. I musn't come over as too professional and competent as that would alienate men. So I play the silly woman on the verge of hysteria, but doing it all for the children.
Maybe the plot and the script are computer generated based on media inspired tick points.
