Well that was a bit shit. Overstyled and predictable. The looking into the camera thing was very cringe too

GassyAss · 19/05/2019 22:00

Yes it’s a true story shot in the real Shibden Hall in Halifax where Anne Lister lived.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 19/05/2019 22:03

The scenery is beautiful. Is that a prosthetic nose she has?

BelfortGabbz · 19/05/2019 22:06

Was looking foward to this but turned off after 30 mins. Not for me.

Crinkle77 · 19/05/2019 22:06

I couldn't warm to the character of Anne Lister. Was she just chasing after Miss Walker for her money?

Lemoneeza · 19/05/2019 22:09

Agree it is slightly underwhelming and clearly made for American audience.
Always a pleasure to see Timothy west though. Will stick with it.

TwitterQueen1 · 19/05/2019 22:10

Boring..... and there seemed to be too much info crammed into the 1st episode (though I'm a bit slow at the moment). Disjointed. She doesn't really pull it all together - I've never warmed to Suranne either, not sure why - I didn't like her in Dr Foster either. Disappointing.

Piggywaspushed · 19/05/2019 22:10

In some ways it reminded me of Vanity Fair - but less plot and not as much fun.

Paperdolly · 19/05/2019 22:11

Well I’m loving it! It’s pacey, funny and it’s not all been shot in a darkened room for a change. I’m watching next week!

Piggywaspushed · 19/05/2019 22:11

No dobby that's definitely Suranne's real nose!

Davros · 19/05/2019 22:33

The music reminded me of No Offence

lifetothefull · 19/05/2019 22:53

Loved it. Especially the song at the end.

MorrisZapp · 19/05/2019 23:17

I thought it was WONDERFUL! (channelling Tom Paulin).

Gorgeous scenery, acting and script imo. I felt some of the sets were too clean but I'll forgive.

The scene with the maids in the kitchen discussing the pregnant French girl was hilarious.

Is it just me or was the opening sequence a nod to Game of Thrones?

Travelledtheworld · 19/05/2019 23:26

I thought it was great. Sort of Jane Austin on speed.
Clever, ironic humour.
Lots of parodied characters.
And yes it's based on a true story.

inchoccyheaven · 19/05/2019 23:35

Have recently visited Shibden hall and keep saying we walked through there, we saw that etc lol. Her bedroom had to be recreated else where though as too small to get everyone in and cameras.
From what we read whilst there she was an incredible woman.
Kind of liked it but felt it was making it to obvious she was interested in Ann. It seemed as if it was for audience rather than how it would have been.
We will see how it goes.

PoorRichard · 19/05/2019 23:54

I’m with Morris, —but will have to overlook the TP reference—. I liked Suranne Jones’ performance, thought it looked beautiful, and generally found it engaging. (Though I confess to mostly lusting after her fabulous caped coats.)

Singlenotsingle · 19/05/2019 23:58

So far, so good. The sound seems a bit muffled though, or is it just me going deaf?

percheron67 · 20/05/2019 00:04

How on earth does Suranne Jones have so many parts in TV drama. She uses the same facial expressions whether she is in Corrie, being a Doctor or Lawyer. I can never believe in her characters because she always does the strange jaw drop and other gurning faces. She ruins plays for me.

drigon · 20/05/2019 00:12

I quite enjoyed it and, as I grew up near Shibden Hall, it brought back nice memories. Yes, there was a bit of " Fleabagging" going on with the remarks to camera! I also wondered how the housekeeper spoke such passable French, maybe missed something.

augustusglupe · 20/05/2019 01:04

percheron67 same here. I didn’t watch tonight because even the trailer left me cold. I enjoyed the first series of Dr Foster, but they should’ve left it there. She over acts in everything she’s in

QueenOfIce · 20/05/2019 01:32

I can't watch, the talking to the camera is so irritating and I don't find Suranne a very good actor at all.

SoupDragon · 20/05/2019 07:20

I also wondered how the housekeeper spoke such passable French, maybe missed something.

Didn't Eugenie say to the housekeeper that she had been the lady's maid before and thus knew what she got up to. I thought she had probably learnt French on their travels.

Overall I enjoyed it as a Sunday night's entertainment. I didn't look at it too deeply. I don't thinkther s too much talking to camera and I like the small looks.

TonTonMacoute · 20/05/2019 08:26

I didn't have high hopes at all, but loved it. I thought Suranne Jones was fantastic. DH enjoyed it too.

Adored her clothes, but the hairstyle was a bit (hmm)

MorrisZapp · 20/05/2019 08:33

I don't like the remarks to camera but they're few and far between. I loved the glorious setting, so interesting that it was actually filmed at Shibden.

Is her mother trying to pimp her out for money? Does her dad basically fear her? Do the locals respect her or find her grotesque? Who makes those fabulous outfits? Is the mincing doctor actually gay?

I'm fascinated!

SoupDragon · 20/05/2019 08:43

I think Suranne's over acting is just fine in this. It seems to suit the character.
