Thank you for posting that @ GotToGoMyOwnWay. I have been reading about Anne Lister since the series and that article was interesting.

Will still look forward to a second series though.

@GotToGoMyOwnWay
Thank you so much for the article. Much appreciated Flowers
Oh, and I know I need glasses, but you had said there were spoilers and the links did not show immediate spoilery unless you decided to skim read them so not sure why you came in for any criticism. It was clear what they were going to be. Flowers

Thank you Rage

I wish Marian hadn't been so pleased to get the tiniest recognition when Anne got home - a pat on the head!
I thought she looked exasperated when she looked to camera, not pleased.

I think Washington might not keep quiet precisely BECAUSE his daughter has now married into the Sowden family. It wasn't a unanimously happy agreement – Mrs Washington had to be talked into it and I think Mr W had his doubts about the son (what's his name?) too – and I think he will start to feel even less enthusiastic about the match now it means a potential scandal.

The mum made a big mistake adding unnecessary detail to the lie about her husbands whereabouts. In a way, yes, but if she'd just said he'd gone to America Mr W would probably have asked how they knew anyway.

CheckingOutTheQuantocks · 15/07/2019 14:49

Yes, I wish the Sowdens had just said they didn't know where shouty drunk guy had gone, and left it at that. I suppose they wanted to lend the lie some authenticity and stop people from asking whether they'd heard from him, but involving another person in it who couldn't be relied upon to play along was a very odd thing to do! If this brother was the dead man's twin, surely they couldn't expect that he would never show up and ask difficult questions.

DarlingNikita · 15/07/2019 16:23

From the look on the lad's face when he turned up, I'd say they didn't much like the brother and certainly hadn't expected to see him. I'd imagine for someone in that time of that class, casual visiting wasn't really a thing, even if they did like each other. It was a pretty serious set of circumstances that led him to have to come and look them up.

In their defence, when they came up with the lie they were under pressure and had probably had enough of people asking if there was any news. It was a disastrous decision though, fairly obviously!

CheckingOutTheQuantocks · 15/07/2019 17:34

If nothing else, they should have kept the story simple because the pair of them were such terrible liars. You could see the panic working its way across their faces when they had to think on the hoof! Great acting.

I must admit, when the son was butchering a pig just as the brother turned up, I was half expecting a single metal button or something to roll out of the pig's stomach and come to rest between them. I was a bit disappointed that it didn't happen!

@gottogomyownway

Thanks for taking the time to upload the screenshots, it’s interesting to hear what happened for them (though i hope they make the tv series less depressing!)

Thoroughly enjoyed the series, like the fact it was a romp!
