I haven’t yet reached the relevant bit in the book (and don’t know whether it’s a RL incident or a bit of script embroidery - hopefully that will become clear) but if it is true to life I’d be inclined to feel that Anne wanted to consult Steph because a) he was Mariana’s brother and she (Anne) has known him for a long time, and
b) in the past, Steph had provided a prescription for the venereal infection Anne had contracted from Mariana (M had caught it from her husband, who had no compunction about being unfaithful). So Anne trusted Steph.

I can quite imagine wanting a second opinion on someone who seems to be suffering some sort of malaise, especially someone who doesn't know all the business of you and your family and everyone else in the district.

There was talk of a depression of the spirits in the 17th century, but it wasn't really used as a medical term till the mid 19th, century. There were also plenty of dodgy treatments for hysteria in women.

But if you can see the change in someone after being with another person and now how the other person seemed to thrive on travelling, I'd be tempted to recommend the same to the person currently suffering a depression, melancholia, whatever.

Really good episode. Not sure about SJ- she seems to (over)play all her characters IMO.

Great acting from actress playing Ann - you could really hear her pain.

Is the story about the violent dad & his death based on an actual person?

MorrisZapp · 11/06/2019 15:18

Loved this episode but the thwarted servant who never got to marry the French maid acted like he'd dropped one of his maltesers rather than had his heart broken.

Thought Anne was veering into histrionics in the final moments, it all got a bit much imo.

The opening scene was bloody hilarious though.

I’ve binge watched all 4 today as I’m laid up off sick. I quite like it but donfeel it is just like a Vic Wood parody

CantspellWontspell · 12/06/2019 18:48

I thought convalescence by the sea or in the countryside was something doctors did prescribe for malaise. I’m sure I’ve read that somewhere.

I’m enjoying it. Not normally a fan of Suranné Jones but I think Anne Lister was a larger than life character and so the overacting is fine for the role. I’m enjoying the humor and the sets the most.

Second series green lighted!!

WhatAGreatDay · 13/06/2019 21:11

Just an historical question. In the scenes with Ann L in her underwear, she has shaved legs and underarms. Did women in general shave in those days? Did wealthy women shave? Does anyone know? I was a bit distracted by this question in these scenes.

It reminded me of Elizabeth in the first season of Poldark. She was a "lady", but wore a ton of make-up. She looked like she should be standing on a stage or on a street corner.

Pebble21uk · 13/06/2019 22:05

There was a scene with Anne L in the bath (I think), where she most definitely has underarm hair. I read somewhere about Suranne Jones not shaving under her arms for the full 8 months of filming.

Whoopstheregomyinsides · 14/06/2019 23:51

Yes I deffo saw armpit hair but no leg hair

EBearhug · 15/06/2019 00:57

I haven't shaved or waxed my legs for a couple of years, and you have to be pretty close-up to tell. I'm just not very hairy, and what hair there is, is mostly fine and pale.

woodhill · 16/06/2019 21:47

Those hideous fashions, walking frilly walking lampshades, so unflattering

BitOfFun · 16/06/2019 21:52

I'm a little bit in love with Miss Anne Lister myself after that marriage proposal.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 16/06/2019 22:00

Oh, wow. Who sent him? That was unexpected.

Sewrainbow · 16/06/2019 22:06

Who was he? One of Miss Walker' s servants?

Pebble21uk · 16/06/2019 22:16

Think he was sent by the Rawsons... or the one brother anyway... he mentioned about her wanting to play with the big boys she'd find out what it's really like (or words to that effect!)

DobbyTheHouseElk · 16/06/2019 22:16

I think he was someone from the cousins.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 16/06/2019 22:17

Oh yes, The Rawsons. The nicer brother did say his brother wasn’t a nice man.

Magmatic80 · 16/06/2019 22:22

Ah, I was shouting ‘who’s he?!’ Forgot about the grotty rawsons.

Toddlerteaplease · 16/06/2019 22:29

I want Al's cloak!

Sewrainbow · 16/06/2019 22:49

The Rawson's - that makes sense! Thanks

BitOfFun · 16/06/2019 22:57

What a horrible bastard!

Fresta · 16/06/2019 23:08

Loving it! I live in Halifax and am enjoying spotting the local area, although there is lots of CGI so some locations are tricky to pick out! I've been to Shibden lots of times and read bout Anne Lister- great to see her brought to life. I love the tongue in cheek humour of the series and feel it's a bit different to other Sally Wainright productions. Suranne is doing a great job of not taking it too seriously and preventing it from being a stuffy period drama, although of course it never could be , could it? Wink

DobbyTheHouseElk · 16/06/2019 23:12

I really thought he was going to rape her. I wonder if that was what the warning was for at the start?
