GoT is actually disgusting, isn't it?

In what way can it be described as 'entertainment'?

I seriously, don't understand why people happily sit down to watch the carnage, the immolation, the screaming children.

What is wrong with people?

Of course you are going to unleash a lot of anger, you have called at least half the population disgusting because of what we choose to watch. I have watched horror films all my life and guess what I have never killed anyone, funny that isn't it. I also don't like to see anybody get hurt in rl. I actually really squeamish in to, but can watch Got, The Walking Dead and other gory horror films no stop. I mean I am a massive fan of the Saw films. The thing is I know the difference between what is real and what isn't. The people on the screen are actors playing a role, people in rl aren't. It has nothing to do with the actual exposure, more the age they are exposed.
I would never let my kids watch any of the programmes I watch, as they are too young and still don't fully grasp the difference between real and fake.

CaptainBrickbeard · 14/05/2019 19:57

Thanks life! I think there is a fun and also very important discussion to be had here, but the OP doesn’t seem to have posted in good faith.

CostanzaG · 14/05/2019 19:59

OP what is your opinion on people reading violent fiction? We know your opinion on TV and computer games and those that watch/play them ..... What about those of us who are avid readers and chose to read books which depict violence?

Pepperdino · 14/05/2019 20:05

The OP seems as strange as her random use of italicisation, and the lion's share of anger has come from her as well as the other person who took over once OP retired to her bed. Most of the responses from GoT fans seem to have been pretty thoughtful. And I suspect the OP is peeved by this hence her return simply to needle.

An odd fish.

NunoGoncalves · 14/05/2019 20:06

Just a little aside here... could we stop hinting at what has happened last episode, or at least put a spoiler warning?
Some if us haven't seen it yet. Many thanks

I saw this thread in the trending box yesterday before I had watched the latest episode, and funnily enough I just didn't read until after I had. Common sense!

Isaididont · 14/05/2019 20:07

People have become desensitised - just watch what was labelled an 18 in the 1980s or 1990s - they now look so incredibly tame.
Tv has become a lot darker and more violent in general over time. There’s more and more stuff I can’t bear to watch. (I know I’m making myself sound really old. I’m late 30s) I’ve never understood how stuff like GoT could be entertaining. I would find it totally traumatic. I don’t mind a little violence in context - but programmes like GoT take it to such an extreme.
I am friends with a lot of doctors and they see so much suffering and horrific injury and pain in real life, none of them watch GoT.

Iris1654 · 14/05/2019 20:09

OP I’d recommend the handmaids tale. You will love it.

Seriously are you crazy? Its drama, yes it’s often uncomfortable to watch, but it layers the story...do you think women were not raped years ago? That prisoners were tortured? People died?

It’s a hugely complex plot, well cast with amazing attention to detail and I have fucking loved it!

CostanzaG · 14/05/2019 20:10

Where as I know doctors and other HCP who do watch GoT .....I don't think you can make such generalisations.

NunoGoncalves · 14/05/2019 20:11

Well, well, well! What a rich seam I have mined!

What anger I have unleashed!

What odd justifications have I read!

There's quite a lot of anger I'm reading. Who knew?

You could swap the "GoT" in your thread title to almost any show, hobby, anything, and get the same reaction because you were rude, confrontational and antagonising about a large group of people. Getting an angry response to that is not exactly meaningful or shocking in any way, is it?

Look:

Sewing is actually disgusting, isn't it?

In what way can it be described as 'entertainment'?

I seriously, don't understand why people happily sit down to waste their time away clacking two bits of plastic together to make stupid shapes out of wool.

What is wrong with people?

mollysshadow · 14/05/2019 20:13

I know lots of people who work in hospitals and medical care who watch GOT, what a silly comment.

LaurieMarlow · 14/05/2019 20:29

I call total bullshit on this. I remember a WWII drama on TV in the 80s where they lined people up and shot them all in the goriest if detail. I’ll never forget that.

LaurieMarlow · 14/05/2019 20:31

Medical people don’t watch GOT is hands down one of the dumbest things I’ve ever read on mumsnet (and Lord knows that takes some doing).

RedRiverShore · 14/05/2019 20:33

OP never did clarify the living arrangements which meant that she had to watch it anyway.

Prequelle · 14/05/2019 20:33

Hahahahaha what the hell

I'm a HCP and let me tell you, we (including doctors) talk about GoT. If they don't watch GoT it's nothing to do with the violence. There's hardly any gore at all anyway Confused

CaptainBrickbeard · 14/05/2019 20:33

What about Schindler’s List? I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything more horrifying in my life. I’m glad I watched it though and I think it’s important that it was made. One thing it definitely didn’t do was to desensitise me!

mollysshadow · 14/05/2019 20:33

Threads from the 80's was bloody horrible and based on something far more realistic and possible than a dragon attack

LaurieMarlow · 14/05/2019 20:36

‘That’ scene in Sophie’s Choice is still the worst thing I’ve ever watched, bar nothing. That’s 80s/90s

Not gory, but disturbing on levels that I can’t begin to process.

A bit of Dracarys is absolutely nothing in comparison.

browneyes77 · 14/05/2019 20:38

Being obnoxious is only going to get you more of the same.

People aren’t pissed that you dislike the show. You’re entitled to have your opinion of it.

People are annoyed at the way you’ve been so condescending and rude about the fact that they watch the show. That’s why you’ve “unleashed anger” as you put it.

You’re disgusted that some of us find this show entertaining. We’re disgusted at your obnoxious, judgmental and facetious attitude.

So we’re even.

CaptainBrickbeard · 14/05/2019 20:40

Laurie I could never watch Sophie’s Choice. I can’t let that scenario into my head. I certainly don’t judge the people who have seen it as being depraved or immoral though and I don’t mind sitting next to them on the bus!

EmperorBallpitine · 14/05/2019 20:40

My husband and I both love it, and our friends do too. Mostly doctors, teachers, nice people. There's lots of gore and sex and also lots of politics and history. I'm a big fan, read the books and the side books so a teensy bit offended by accusation that I must be a wanking teenage boy.
Fwiw I don't enjoy horror films really but I do like a visceral history/fantasy show, like vikings or lotr

Prequelle · 14/05/2019 20:41

Hands down the most disturbing scene I've ever watched was the rape scene in This Is England, can't remember which season. It was horrific, like any rape scene would be but it captured it in such a reality.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 14/05/2019 20:41

Iwan Rheon, who plays Ramsay Bolton, has some sound advice for you, OP. He said this when being interviewed about one of the more controversial scenes in the show, where his character rapes his new wife on their wedding night which caused much frothing at the mouth on social media:

"I think maybe if people put more effort into the charities that help women in the world today deal with the horror of rape, and put less effort into social media about a fantasy show, then maybe things could change."

LaurieMarlow · 14/05/2019 20:44

Laurie I could never watch Sophie’s Choice. I can’t let that scenario into my head.

Best not to, I think it’s (among) the most horrifying things a human can contemplate.

squidgimon · 14/05/2019 20:45

Yes that was so horribly real @Prequelle , it has really stayed with me Sad

ChariotsofFish · 14/05/2019 20:47

I don’t particularly like the violent bits of GoT and tbh have difficulty following battle scenes. But if you think that’s all it is you haven’t seen it. And you’re missing out on something which, at its best, is genuinely brilliant.
