GoT is actually disgusting, isn't it?

Miljah · 13/05/2019 20:23

In what way can it be described as 'entertainment'?

I seriously, don't understand why people happily sit down to watch the carnage, the immolation, the screaming children.

What is wrong with people?

OP posts:
browneyes77 · 14/05/2019 18:47

The, to watch GoT where the vast majority of violent acts are drawn from the realities of so, so many people, for Western entertainment

Yes because there’s loads of Dragons flying about burning people to death....Hmm

Seriously, just because YOU don’t like/agree with the tv show, doesn’t mean you have the right to be so judgemental and look down your nose at people who do enjoy watching it.

You seem to equate watching it with being some kind of disgusting deranged person?
There are many tv shows that have disturbing material in them, doesn’t make people freaks for watching them and finding them entertainment. The human mind is inquisitive and wants to understand things. It’s perfectly normal and not the terrible thing you make it out to be.

I can appreciate that some people like yourself would find these shows too disturbing to watch. Why can’t you appreciate that some people find them interesting and entertaining without being Miss Judgey Pants about it and putting your own spin and reasons on why people watch it?

Don’t ever watch Vikings then, because I think that would push you over the edge Grin

browneyes77 · 14/05/2019 18:53

Hi, my name's Madeleine, I have watched all episodes of GOT so far, it's been 1 hour since my last episode.

So far, I have not burned any ships whilst on my dragon, not raped anyone, not shagged my sibling, not stuck a sword in anyone, not killed an ice zombie king intent on killing the entire world and not beheaded any interpreters.

Aberforthsgoat · 14/05/2019 18:54

Surely it's the same as watching crime thrillers? People chose to watch that for entertainment and it's often gore, suffering and basically watching murder for entertainment. Soaps feature disturbing rape scenes, murders, abuse etc
I think your issue is with humanity as a whole and how entertainment has changed rather than Game of Thrones specifically. What about horror movies? Films like Saw?
Threads like this always bemuse me when someone has singled out a specific show when there are countless other shows or films with the same themes.

And the use of italics is weird OP, you don't need to use it constantly to make your point.

VampireSlayer19 · 14/05/2019 18:54

Hang on it’s the 8th series - have you been watching for 8 series and only just noticed 😂

Purplegecko · 14/05/2019 18:56

@LisaSimpsonsbff people who have an interest in true crime are "ghouls"? Better drop my law degree then, don't want to be thought of as "ghoulish".

Icandothisallday · 14/05/2019 18:56

Can I ask if the OP thinks emmerdale is disgusting and people watching the episodes around Victoria and her being raped should have been on.

Because honestly, while it was harrowing I walked in last night while it was on and she was talking about doing whatever ever it takes to get him, being kind of ok about being pregnant to her rapist and coming out the other side a strong women with a sense of seeking justice. Then she will probably get her day in court, he will get found guilty and in 2 years it wint get mentioned again.

I find that annoying because thats not how it if for most victims or rape. They sing feel stronger a couple of weeks later and feel comfortable telling their whole family and friends. They dont get their day in court. They dont get justice and they dont go back to normal and forget in a few years. It's not realistic, so exactly what's the value in it? When the story started, I really hoped they would follow what it's actually like. I hope they still do. But at the moment, it's not.

At least with Sansa torture and rape, you can see its changed her. In Good and bad ways. Its still mentioned years later, you can still see the impact on her and of those around her. You can see she will never be who she was before, being raped took something from her.

Despite the dragons, things like this in GOT are more realistic.

Icandothisallday · 14/05/2019 18:59

Sorry forgot to say, I done judge people watching Emmerdales completely fake rape and unrealistic view of how the aftermath plays out.

If that what you want to watch, do it.

Dotis · 14/05/2019 19:02

Watched half of the first episode that was enough for me!

Icandothisallday · 14/05/2019 19:03

I have managed to watch them and keep my dragon from killing people.

However, my dragon is actually more a very timid cocker spaniel, I did try and get her to light the BBQ. But no matter how many times I said 'Dracarys' she just stared at me. And she bloody watches it with me too.

Too small to ride too. Her nickname is 'half dog' as she is tiny.

Still love her though

PinguDance · 14/05/2019 19:10

I dip in and out of GoT but stopped properly watching in S3 for much the same reasons as OP doesn’t like it - however my Mum loves it and, you know, she’s alright.

NunoGoncalves · 14/05/2019 19:13

Of course it desensitizes

Maybe it desensitises us to fictional portrayals of gore and violence? I'm not sure if there's any link between the two. Personally I can watch people being sliced up and burned alive and having their eyes gouged out on TV without flinching, but when my OH cut his finger on a tin can lid I almost fainted.

TheRollingCrone · 14/05/2019 19:16

I used to enjoy watching Kirstie & Phil - and all the food shows. I just can't now - with food banks and homelessness, I just feel wretched watching them. I understand the violence & torture may be way too much for some in GOT, I quite enjoyed the books.

Dany's gone too fucking far though this week. We all know she's on the list now Grin

browneyes77 · 14/05/2019 19:17

@Purplegecko

I love watching true crime. Not for the horrible things that happened, but because I like to know how the police solved it. How did they catch this person? What was this persons motives? I find it fascinating to see how the case unfolded and how that person was brought to justice.

CaptainBrickbeard · 14/05/2019 19:21

What about Blood Diamond, The Handmaid’s Tale, Macbeth, countless shows and films and plays and books involving rape, torture and violence? If we watch or read them, does that mean we are enjoying the rape and murder?

I’m horrified by the insidious spread of violent pornography and the terrible impact it is having, particularly on teenagers. But pornography presents acts of sexual brutality and humiliation as something real, desirable and normal when in fact it is none of those things and is instead filmed abuse.

The rape that has occurred in GoT and the burning alive of children and other shocking scenes of terrible violence haven’t been presented as desirable and I don’t think they have been portrayed as titillating either. I have cried watching them, I have been haunted by certain scenes (more from the books than the tv show). So I haven’t enjoyed them in the sense of ‘ooh, what a great rape, I hope some children get burned alive next!’ They’ve shocked and distressed me. And, most importantly, made me think and debate and analyse and learn. GoT, like many things I have read or watched, makes me grapple with the question of evil and confront moral dilemmas.

I read Classical Studies at university; I immersed myself for three years in Ancient Greek mythology and drama. There was a lot of rape and violence in the stories. I think of the works of literature I have loved and a lot of them are dark, blood-soaked and full of horror - Frankenstein, Dracula, the shows/books I listed at the start of my post... all of them are compelling stories which provoke thought and discussion.

I’d never watch Saw or Hostel or pornography - as far as I know, they just present rape and murder and torture with no moral dimension and very little in the way of any kind of story. I don’t see any value in them and I believe they can be harmful. I do think GoT is very different.

Miljah · 14/05/2019 19:38

Well, well, well! What a rich seam I have mined!

What anger I have unleashed!

What odd justifications have I read!

There's quite a lot of anger I'm reading. Who knew?

However, I want to make it clear, I did not name change in order to go on posting into the evening. I needed to go to bed because I am not so over-invested in my need to go on defending my viewing choices, while questioning yours, that I'd bother to stay up to do so; that was another poster who feels the same way as me; alongside many others.

OP posts:
CharDeeMacDennis · 14/05/2019 19:40

I also loved Rome which an earlier poster described as wank fodder for teens

I think that comment might have been referring to Spartacus: Blood and Sand rather than Rome, though I might be wrong, of course. Spartacus was actually rather good, despite its trashy look and gallons of cartoonish blood.

Capt Brickbeard above has made all the points I would have made, really, as have other posters, so I'll not comment further. It does baffle me a bit when people say GoT is "gory". I mean, it's not really, is it? It depicts violence and horrific acts, but actual gore is quite sparing, given the large number of episodes. Oberyn's death was gory. Viserys, maybe, although that shot was quite fleeting. The Shireen episode was horrendous and upsetting but not gory.

There isn't all that much sex, either, tbf.

HPLikecraft · 14/05/2019 19:43

Just a little aside here... could we stop hinting at what has happened last episode, or at least put a spoiler warning?
Some if us haven't seen it yet. Many thanks!

As you were....

MonkeyToesOfDoom · 14/05/2019 19:43

The MN Hivemind is bonkers.

Porn: work of the devil himself.
Video games: Satan's personal wank bank.
Grand Theft Auto V: literally breaks into your house, puts pink panties on the Labrador and fucks it.
Game Of Thrones: not real so it's fine entertainment.

Prequelle · 14/05/2019 19:43

The GoT fans have gotten a bit defensive maybe because people have tried to insinuate they're either a bit thick to enjoy such lowly entertainment, a prebube boy wanting to get his jollies from it, or some sort of violence loving fetishist.

I loved the books, I watched the show. It's that simple. My favourite genre of film is Horror, GoT isn't horror but it has some themes meant to horrify. Different people like different things.

I don't particular understand why people enjoy twee romance films but I don't slag them off for it.

CaptainBrickbeard · 14/05/2019 19:49

OP, I’m not angry and I think there is an interesting discussion to be had. But not if your responses are just mocking and superficial. Same with posters being scathing about the MN ‘hivemind’ which isn’t actually a thing.

Pornography is certainly different to fiction. The harm done to the participants is vast and extreme. The actors playing the GoT victims are not genuinely tortured, injured, humiliated and coerced as people in pornography frequently are.

Video games - I do wonder if there is a difference in being the perpetrator of the violence, even when it is not real, to watching it. Something like GTA to me is more akin to Saw/Hostel which I think do glorify hideous violence in a way that I would say shows like GoT would not.

I think we all draw a line somewhere and it would be interesting and informative if this thread explored where the lines are and why we put them in different places, but if it’s just for people to scorn and pour derision and judgement rather than engage and explain then o definitely cba and might just go watch GoT reruns instead!

twattymctwatterson · 14/05/2019 19:52

I'm wondering what else op would rather be banned? Sorry "shouldn't be allowed on public access tv" (it's not).

Op do you realise GOT isn't the most violent program on tv? Oh and the fantasy series of books it's based on contains more violence and depictions of rape (used as a tool of war), the tv show has toned it down quite a bit tbh.

Should people not be freely able to buy violent literature either? Because let's face it, that includes a LOT of the classics... how about people who enjoy depictions of violent scenes in paintings? I take it those works of art shouldn't be hung in galleries? God knows what they could cause people to do.

Figgygal · 14/05/2019 19:53

Thrones hasn't been about tits for years when was the last time some of you watched it?? It's a very layered saga about family and power shouldn't be dismissed as a wank fantasy

This week was hard to watch sure it was showing you the grim reality of war and boy was it grim and uncomfortable but why should that be shyed away from or deny that such horrible things happen in war (dragon immolation aside)

Pepperdino · 14/05/2019 19:53

MN is massive so the hivemind thing is nonsense unless you're polling the very same people on each issue.

Lifeofalchemy · 14/05/2019 19:56

CaptainBrickbeard just wanted to say I really liked your brilliant and intelligent post.
I have found this thread very disturbing actually: adults putting down other adults because they watch a particular TV Show! As you point out, there are other genres that portray sex and violence in a titillating and one dimensional way which can be damaging. In contrast GoT is meant to be shocking and thought provoking to give it’s main political storyline, sub-plots and character development credibility.

Pepperdino · 14/05/2019 19:56

Swerving threads pertaining to the thing you're avoiding would seem the easiest way to dodge spoilers.
