Best ever Eurovision song?

SinkGirl · 27/04/2019 18:35

Okay, I’m a huge Eurovision fan (went to the semi finals a few years ago in Stockholm, bloody wonderful) and have managed to convert DH.

We are arguing about which is the best Eurovision entry of all time, or at least of the last 12 years or so which is as long as he’s been watching.

What do other fans think?

Bold and Olly- some of my faves there. The Anne Marie David one was the first I ever bought.

RageAgainstTheVendingMachine · 27/04/2019 22:34

See you all on here on the 14th? Glitterball
There are some excellent entries this year actually.
Conchita will be singing Heroes, Mans Fuego, Verka Toy as a song swap entertainment in the first round. I am way too excited already.

AgentCooper · 27/04/2019 22:37

Euphoria is still an absolute belter.

Tarrarra · 27/04/2019 22:49

I can't believe noone has put forward Bobbysocks "La det swinge" as a top song... Pure joy 😂!

Tarrarra · 27/04/2019 22:50

But I agree with Euphoria for recent songs!

mathanxiety · 27/04/2019 22:54

Hey Math! Wondered when you'd show up when the Eurovision klsxon sounded! (Have nsmechange since we last talked ESC)
Treno de Tozeur also on my Spotify list.

RageAgainstTheVendingMachine · 27/04/2019 22:57

SPOILER 2019

Funny preview for those who are not waiting to be surprised at the semis.

mathanxiety · 27/04/2019 22:59

I suspect I am in a minority of one, but I liked these though they were obvious no-hopers.

Greece 1976. Spain 1983

Bonjour to my people!

I've name changed in honour of this thread and am joining in the Sebastian Tellier love. Divine is absolutely one of the greatest entries ever - I remember it being featured on a car advert a few years later; I literally jumped up and squealed at the TV!

I'd also like to put forward City Lights by Blanche. Excellent song.

SwedishEdith · 27/04/2019 23:09

Oh, glad someone else remembers the Luxembourg winners. Vicky Leandros must be the first year I watched it. This is still a great song and on my Eurovision playlist.

Douzepoints · 27/04/2019 23:10

Also, OP, I'm so jealous - actually attending Eurovision is the top of my bucket list. It's so expensive though.

DrBuckles · 27/04/2019 23:11

Oh I came on to say Sebastian Tellier! I put it on my playlist every May in homage to its greatness.

mathanxiety · 27/04/2019 23:12

Among more recent entries:

Belgium 2017, Blanche 'City Lights'

And Loic Nottet, Belgium 2015 'Rhythm Inside' was also very good.

to TheCanterburyWhales !

mathanxiety · 27/04/2019 23:23

Finland's 'Blackbird' never made it out of the semi finals in 2017 Sad. It's on my favourites playlist.

RiaOverTheRainbow · 27/04/2019 23:29

Hippopotas · 27/04/2019 23:30

Love Sebastian Tellier but my fav is in my dreams by Wig Wam followed by Vizlat Nya from last year and Eyes that never lie from Belarus quite few years ago.

Tomboytown · 27/04/2019 23:44

Diggy loo diggy lay

RedRiverShore · 28/04/2019 05:49

The one I remember most and sang a lot as a child was Congratulations, apparently it came second by one point at the end, though I don't remember the voting only the song and singing it at school. No such excitement now for the UK in the voting now sadly

SinkGirl · 28/04/2019 06:52

DouzePoints it is expensive, although the semi finals much less so and were still great fun. We hadn’t realised when we booked that they were putting on a live screening of the final in a nearby concert hall, and selling tickets cheap. We’d already flown back by then but a semi final plus that would have been brilliant.

We booked the cheapest hotel we could which was fine - I think the biggest expense was just spending a week in Stockholm but we didn’t have to do that.

Apparently this year a ticket to both semis and the final is 900€ 😳

My sister and BIL were at the final last year. Very jealous. This year we are making do with a party :)

This is NOT my favourite song, but this thread has made me think of this cringey UK entry from the 90's

m.youtube.com/watch?v=YBOyS6OV4Kc

I think at the time it was considered brave to have a 'rap' song as an entry. "It's like a voodoo, y'know what I'm saying? Baby girl, I ain't playing" Grin

Cringe. Definitely one for David Brent's playlist.

SinkGirl · 28/04/2019 06:54

What’s everyone’s thoughts on Netta?

I wasn’t a fan in the live show, but while listening to some Eurovision classics on YouTube, the studio version came on and I think it’s actually pretty good! Normally I listen to the album first but I didn’t last year. This year I’m going in unspoiled :)

I was just thinking of Love City Groove last night - classic!

Do you remember the year when the way we picked the U.K. entry was giving Frances Ruffelle tons of songs to sings and then picking one? 😂

I do still miss Terry, Norton just isn’t the same. Although i do love Mel. In fact when we were in Stockholm we stopped off for a drink after dinner one night in a very random hipster bar and she was sat next to us. We were very excited but left her alone as I’m sure she’d had her fill of Eurovision nutters by then 😂

So many I can't pick a favourite.

Herreys - Diggi-Loo, Diggi-Ley
Nicole - A Little Peace
Jonny Logan - What's Another Year and Hold Me Now
And of course Bucks Fizz!
