New Drama starring Richard Gere.

This better be good!

Agree with a PP Best use of flashback ever.

NoBaggyPants · 15/04/2019 10:36

I think it's a very intelligent programme, and true to real life (albeit a life that few of us live in!). Power and politics is all about scheming and control, and people on the same side will turn on each other when it suits their goals.

The political characters are particularly complex, and I've enjoyed trying to match them to real life politicians. SL is a wolf in sheep's clothing (Blair), and the PM appears to be a staunch elitist but then you see a softer side to him too (haven't matched him with anyone yet!).

WidowTwonky · 15/04/2019 23:25

😱Max is truly awful. I guess Kayden was just as bad previously but would he ever have thrown his own family under the bus like that?
And the poor PMs son

WidowTwonky · 15/04/2019 23:26

2 eps left I think

BettyBooJustDoinTheDoo · 17/04/2019 00:54

I think it’s fabulous, it’s so different from anything else, I’m fed up of women being murdered as entertainment it’s such a refreshing change, I loved it from the first episode, DH was a bit Hmm about it at first but now he’s hooked as well, more programmes like this please.

Dulra · 17/04/2019 08:01

BettyBooJustDoinTheDoo agree i nearly gave but after ep 2 but glad I stuck with it. Max is just awful I nearly screamed at the tv when he came in to their meeting with the journalist. No idea where it's going to go but if it's true to life at all max will get away with it all, they always do Sad

Charley50 · 17/04/2019 08:24

@cherrytree63 - I think they talked about the daughter and she was stillborn or a cot death. Max was trying to blame his ex and her drinking / drug taking. She defended herself saying that was after the baby died, because of her grief.

Charley50 · 17/04/2019 08:27

And me too Betty Boo.

cherrytree63 · 17/04/2019 16:22

@charley50 thanks.
I may rewatch it all when the last two episodes are available, I think I've missed a few bits.

WonderK · 17/04/2019 16:51

I think it's great too. Sounds like it is based on the real Murdoch-News of the World story, no?

beanaseireann · 17/04/2019 18:58

Billy Howle ( son ) is a fantastic actor in the series.

RedRiverShore · 17/04/2019 20:27

I also think that this is really good now, I think i am going to go back and rewatch some earlier episodes as I wasn’t paying too much attention to them

Fere · 18/04/2019 01:47

@bibbitybobbityyhat Would a newspaper mogul like the father character really have a very young (early 20s?) woman as his right hand person?

she is in her mid 30's, she has a teenager daughter

calpop · 18/04/2019 14:32

this is getting better and better i think. I couldn't help thinking about Farage and his Brexit Party. You just know people will fall for it, just like SL character in this. Really reflects how divided UK is with Brexit qs well. Interesting to see how it was all whipped up by powerful.new moguls, probably true in RL too no doubt. Were we seeing sign of regret in Maxs face at the SL rally?

HouseOfMouse · 18/04/2019 14:51

Max is very difficult to read, but I think his demeanour did change in that rally meeting and you could see he realised he may have backed the wrong horse.
He really is a monster. I was so glad when his wife left, once she could see what was laid out for her unborn son.

Fere · 19/04/2019 14:38

I watched 7 episodes and can't really complain about actors, I think dialogues should have been polished up but enjoyed the story so far and can see why this scrip has made to production, very contemporary story

Ewanthescreamsheep · 20/04/2019 16:10

HMc looked amazing in that gold dress (plus it had pockets!!!).

beanaseireann · 20/04/2019 19:25

I think HMcC is very ordinary.

beanaseireann · 20/04/2019 19:25

She's a good actress.

Charley50 · 20/04/2019 19:35

I think she's fantastic.

BoldMeDontAtMe · 20/04/2019 20:14

She's amazing, but can only work with the script she's given.

beanaseireann · 24/04/2019 23:20

Anyone watch tonight's episode ?

Charley50 · 25/04/2019 07:00

Yeah and I found it deeply shit if was the last episode.

Iwantmychairback · 25/04/2019 07:18

Left it open for MotherFatherSon 2 imo.

GeorgeTheBleeder · 25/04/2019 07:57

Oh my! Binge watched episodes 4-8. Anything sensible I had to say about it has been swept from my brain by sheer awe at Katherine’s wardrobe. That was magnificent. She had quite possibly the best clothes I’ve seen on any TV series ever. And it must have been fun contrasting those amazing outfits with the dowdy, shapeless, monotonous clothes forced on some of the other characters.

As for the rest - dreadful, obfuscatory dialogue; embarrassingly bad flashbacks, and I doubt I’ll ever forgive them for killing off the PM’s son. But goodness it was compelling. Although it did all get a bit Peaky Blinders towards the end - when it was clear they were just setting out the chess pieces for the next series. What was Katherine’s real motive - desire to protect her son, or a long buried, scheming desire for power?
