New Drama starring Richard Gere.

This better be good!

I hate it when they use American vocab for the US audience. I fell asleep.

Moanranger · 06/03/2019 22:51

Odd, vapid dialog, and the characterisation of Gere’s character - WTAF? I kept thinking, ok, this is Murdoch, but would Murdoch do any of this? And the thing about an American not knowing what shortbread was- really?
Who wrote this?

Zog14 · 06/03/2019 23:15

I quite liked it. I just kept thinking about how many different ways parents can fuck up their offspring. He looked totally suffocated and emasculated by their differing expectations. I think in this context, the sex scene, although unpleasant in parts made sense.

Anyone know how many episodes?

southeastdweller · 06/03/2019 23:17

Seven more episodes after this.

bibbitybobbityyhat · 07/03/2019 06:17

I thought it was hugely overdone. About as subtle as a sledgehammer. A very self consciously "big production" with the lavish settings and designer details. Even the homeless guy's flat had a chic little cabinet in it. And that scene between him and Helen Mc when he said he wanted to kiss her - came right out of the Richard Curtis school of writing. Seems so unfair to dump that number of thematic cliches on the shoulders of one actor (the son) in just a handful of scenes - no wonder he's hamming it up and over-acting his little socks off. Would a newspaper mogul like the father character really have a very young (early 20s?) woman as his right hand person? Would parents actually be allowed to watch brain surgery being performed on their son from a viewing gallery?

hopeishere · 07/03/2019 06:49

Why would you think it was set in America?! Confused

He met the Prime Minister - big clue!!

I thought Sarah Lancaster was awful. So unbelievable!!

bibbitybobbityyhat · 07/03/2019 06:55

Just read the review in the Independent and I see that the reviewer agrees with me Wink - it is overblown, unnatural, inauthentic and weirdly flat. Lets hope it improves. It's a shame as I really loved The Killing of Gianni Versace.

purpleme12 · 07/03/2019 07:12

Ok I get it I was stupid to think it might have been in America. I did explain my reasoning but it doesn't matter

SavageBeauty73 · 07/03/2019 12:48

I enjoyed it. Thought Richard Gere still has the same body language he had in The Officer and a Gentleman. Teenage crush of mine.

I met Sarah Lancashire at a party and she's absolutely LOVELY!

Will definitely watch the next episode although the sex scene was cringe!

humblesims · 07/03/2019 15:36

Love Sarah L and Helen Mc and Richard Gere but found the whole thing...pretty shit. Just goes to show it doesnt matter how good an actor you are if the writing is shit then you cant do nought with it. I'll watch again next week but dont hold out much hope

UrsulaPandress · 07/03/2019 17:34

Sarah L is bloody fabulous and I love her in everything. But dear god she was totally wasted in this.

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 07/03/2019 17:36

I thought it was a load of old fanny. But I'll give it a second chance next week to see if it picks up.

Clawdy · 07/03/2019 21:57

purpleme12 DH said exactly the same as you! And the whole thing had an American feel. Won't be watching the next.

purpleme12 · 07/03/2019 22:02

Oh I'm not the only one then lol

unique1986 · 07/03/2019 22:19

I'm sure Sarah Lancashire will be in it more as the weeks go on.
But when it's and at the end it's always smaller role.

unique1986 · 07/03/2019 22:20

I think like the actors in this she thought or would be amazing...

OP posts:
unique1986 · 07/03/2019 22:21

It..
Everyone said the script wowed them.
I'll have to get over the American few words.

OP posts:
oldowlgirl · 07/03/2019 22:22

I'm hoping it gets better as that was a pile of shite but I love Richard Gere & Sarah Lancashire so will stick with it for a while.

TwitterQueen1 · 07/03/2019 22:29

I thought the script included a heavy amount of meaningless drivel. I couldn't make sense of a lot of it (though my brain isn't working at its best...). Stellar cast, BUT the best characterisation and acting came from the amazing Sinead Cusack (Maggie) and the other investigative journo Paul Ready.

Choccywoccyhooha · 08/03/2019 00:37

Oh my! I love a bit of pretentious bollocks, but this out-pretentioned me!
The sex scene...wth? The brain!? Too much.

For the love of Sarah Lancashire I will watch next week, but that's the last chance it gets from me.

UrsulaPandress · 08/03/2019 01:54

She is making a new series of Happy Valley and Last Tango apparently.

SalliSunbeem · 08/03/2019 08:25

I've heard there is a full frontal at the end, dare I hope it's RG 😀😀

oldowlgirl · 08/03/2019 09:29

Yes, there was a full frontal but not RG.

OKBobble · 08/03/2019 10:37

RG is 71 now so thankfully it wasn't him!!

unique1986 · 08/03/2019 10:55

He is 69
