Finally watching episode 1 of this. What I don't understand is, do the contestants know they are on a stage and that the mirrors might open? I thought they didn't know, but none of them seem shocked that there's an audience there when they open

I'm watching it now just watched Ellie it's the first one I've enjoyed

It really is rubbish but keep watching

Loved oti's wet mermaid look

SoupDragon · 10/02/2019 11:54

I think what they said about Ellie is right - she's just 14 and the only solo dancer but she still fills the stage.

SoupDragon · 10/02/2019 11:55

I loved the dance with Years and Years. I think the concept with that cube would have been better for Harry and Eleiyah's "four walls" dance.

emilybrontescorsett · 10/02/2019 16:40

I love this.
My favourites so far are Harry and Elliyah and Ellie.
I think they are all good.
I think the group who got the toy theme were short changed by the choreography. So much they could have done but girls as dolls and boys as soldiers,Nooooooo.

emilybrontescorsett · 10/02/2019 16:41

Also I know it shouldn't be relevant but who the hell chose Alicias outfut?
What were they thinking?

SparkofJoy · 10/02/2019 19:58

I hope Sasha doesn't lead every week.

I'm really surprised that James and Oliver and Frobacks stayed over Matthew's two groups.

Five left.
H&E
Ellie
Frobacks
Danes Bates Collective
KLA

Oblomov19 · 10/02/2019 20:05

Can't really bare to watch anymore. It's too weak. A programme. Becoming painful. Not the dancing itself. The rest of the stuff.

Italiangreyhound · 10/02/2019 20:46

SparkofJoy me too I'm really surprised that James and Oliver and Frobacks stayed over Matthew's two groups"

Six left
H&E
Ellie
Frobacks
Danes Bates Collective
KLA
And James and Oliver

Italiangreyhound · 10/02/2019 20:47

Just love it.

xsquared · 10/02/2019 21:02

James and Oliver are Matthew's too.

I thought Matthew had the strongest group but having two leave in one night must have been devastating for him.

I think having two very large groups was a mistake as it can lose focus and impact, depending on the choreography.

Ellie is a solo act and I thought she'd struggle to fill the stage but she is mesmerising to watch and her movements are well shaped and defined.

charliebear78 · 10/02/2019 21:25

How come two left???

SparkofJoy · 10/02/2019 22:58

Of course 6, I'd forgotten James and Oliver already. BlushGrin

SparkofJoy · 10/02/2019 22:59

They said last week there would be two leaving this week.

OBface · 11/02/2019 17:03

Is it just me who doesn't rate the dancers on this?

Contemporary is not the contemporary I know - just seems to be tricks and poor transitions.

And I've seen much tighter street/commercial.

I get the feeling Matthew's not that impressed either...

So looked forward to a decent dancing programme for once - so disappointed.

toomanyofthemnow · 13/02/2019 18:54

No, it's not just you.
Contemporary is not the contemporary I know
Nor me, the real deal is practically never seen on tv.
And I've seen much tighter street/commercial
Yep. I'm severely unimpressed, and if each person danced individually instead of part of a big group, then the technique shortcomings would be... how can I say this? Evident? (The kids latin group an exception, they're all well trained).
I get the feeling Matthew's not that impressed either...
He's looked like he wishes he were somewhere else from the start, hasn't he?
So looked forward to a decent dancing programme for once
BBC Young Dancer 2019 will be on BBC4 some time soonish I think - and some proper contemporary on that for you Grin

OBface · 13/02/2019 23:45

So it's.not just me Toomany Smile We've actually got tickets to the Young Dancer final in May! Think the category finals will be on BBC4 sometime in April...

If anyone is interested in watching some 'authentic' contemporary check out the Prix de Lausanne competition which was held last week - really good coverage on their Youtube page.

toomanyofthemnow · 14/02/2019 01:00

Lucky you OB - my dd trained with a couple of the dancers who were in it last time.

OBface · 14/02/2019 09:12

Oh wow where does/did your daughter train Toomany? Just starting out on the associate audition path with mine...

toomanyofthemnow · 14/02/2019 13:52

OB I will PM you.

SoupDragon · 16/02/2019 20:10

Why do the Frobacks only have 3 seconds of each song? It's shit. And what's with the gratuitous stripping?

xsquared · 16/02/2019 20:16

I agree soupsragon. There seems to be no variation in anything they do and they haven't really grown through the competition.
Harry and Eleiyah were brilliant.

emilybrontescorsett · 16/02/2019 20:29

I agree about the Frobacks.
Every week they rip off their shirts like a cheap Chipendales tribute act.
Ellie and Harry and Elieyah are still my favourites with Dane Bates Collective a close third.

LIZS · 16/02/2019 20:37

Not seen this for a few weeks and tbh think the standard is not that great. Too many props and distractions, not enough crispness and synchronicity. Several performances were just rather messy.

Comefromaway · 16/02/2019 20:42

I watched the first episode saw how ridiculous it was (fantastic ballet dancer didn’t get through but Cheryl fan did) and gave up

Then I found out that someone who bullied dd is on it so I won’t watch it now.

It had the potential to be a great series but the BBC’s went about it the wrong way.

SoupDragon · 16/02/2019 20:48

James and Oliver should have gone home. They are consistently average I think.
