old one

OP posts:
WideWebWitch · 25/12/2007 20:10

Wasn't that fantastic? I was all tingly when he did his "I am The Doctor, I am 903 years old" etc speech

theUrbanDryAdventCalendar · 25/12/2007 20:12

just posted this on the other thread, but is it wrong that i was more excited about Dr Who than Christmas?

edam · 25/12/2007 20:21

It was fab but I wish Russell T could pull back on the schmaltz a tiny bit. I know it's Christmas and all, but did he really have to turn Astrid into a shooting star? It's supposed to be Dr Who, not bloody Disney!

Liked the line about the snow not being real, though.

Fubsyinapeartree · 25/12/2007 22:29

DD wasnt so keen on this one, she got upset that so many people died.

She got all the sonics for Xmas - a new screwdriver from my bro, the masters laser from me, and SJS's lipstick from santa.

She's written Bad Wolf on her bedroom wall in UV pen!

sphil · 26/12/2007 13:20

Same here - asked DS1 if he enjoyed it and he said
"Not really. Too much death".
l loved the Poseidon Adventure references!

Nymphadora · 26/12/2007 14:52

My kids weren't very happy at all the death too, not sure it was worse than some of the others though

sphil · 26/12/2007 16:57

I think the difference was that it was characters we had 'got to know'.
Still like 'Christmas Invasion' best of the Xmas specials - now that's an upbeat episode!

MerryXMoss · 27/12/2007 09:13

Well I did enjoy it; I have to say it surprised me who died and who survived. Not sure about Astrid being turned into stardust. I had wondered about the anagram thing and whether she would become some integral part of the TARDIS. I enjoyed the new season trailer at the end, too!

Rustybear it made me think of Robots of Death, too.

And of course we got to see DT in a DJ once more... Mmmm!

Oh I got Hand of Fear for Christmas from dh so if I ever get a moment to myself I'll be watching that (have seen it already but quite liked it).

moyasmum · 27/12/2007 09:36

Some good lines but disappointing .Kylie looked and acted unimpressive. She was a better actor in neighbours. (mind you I dont get the kylie as singer thing either!)

edam · 27/12/2007 09:39

Ds has been talking a lot about the naughty angels, as if he needs to process it. He's only four so maybe a bit young for this... but he is interested in Dr Who and we couldn't resist!

UnquietDad · 27/12/2007 16:45

I like the new bass-heavy theme tune (although the new "flash-by" end titles will take some getting used to). And I want "The Stowaway" on mp3 asap!

It had a plot, and didn't sag in the last half - and the characters weren't black-and-white, even the intergalactic yuppie swine who survived. Lots of nods to past stories - the hull breach and a character being sucked out from "The Mutants", merging spaceships from "Nightmare of Eden" (although resolved rather more easily here), and of course the Hosts being strongly reminiscent of the Voc robots, down to the "kill, kill kill" with outstretched arms. And the hand-in-the-door sequence, of course - too close to be anything other than deliberate homage. Max Capricorn ended up channelling Davros through the "Frontios" mining-machine (and just for a millisecond led me to believe, as he trundled into view, that we were about to see John Lumic again). And of course the teleport bracelets were "Blake's Seven", while a "reconstitution" like that of Astrid was first, I believe, attempted by Mr Scott in "Star Trek".

Didn't like the "I'm the Doctor, I'm a Time Lord" speech though... I thought the "noble self-sacrifices" could have been spread out a bit beyond the one location, and I did wonder what the fork-lift truck was doing there - plus there's the inconsistency over the money (if we take the Doctor's valuation of Mr Copper's card to be correct, the Van Hoffs' phone-bill would be about a hundred quid, which may be steep but not exactly disastrous). But they were my only real niggles.

DD sobbed uncontrollably at Astrid's demise. She is such a highly-strung young lady!

Enjoyed the season 4 trailer too and I've re-watched it a good few times today - I see it is up on YouTube already... here if people want to see it

JackieNoel · 27/12/2007 22:58

The fork lift truck was there because someone brought several of the 'broken' Host down on it near the beginning of the episode.

Hated the bit with the Queen waving etc. Liked the rest of it, but a bit schmalzy.

ReverseThePolarity · 30/12/2007 20:13

Nice summary UnquietDad! JackieNoel yes I wasn't sure about the bit with the Queen in but I'm not the most ardent royalist anyway so I wouldn't be, would I?

('Tis Mossy btw, this is my new name; I'm sure you lot will appreciate it!)

JackieNo · 30/12/2007 23:00

Like it, RtP

ninewurlysdancing · 30/12/2007 23:04

anyone know when the new series starts, I cant wait.

Joash · 30/12/2007 23:17

I was very disappointed and I'm a fan. Cannot for the life of me understand why they had to have Kylie, she's even more wooden in her acting than she is in her singing and let's be honest, she is looking a bit like an old trout lately - rough as a bears backside (as my DH put it), she looked even worse than she did on the X-factor, and I would have thought that was impossible to do. It's really put me off and I can only hope that the series gets back on track straight away - otherwise this is one family that won't be watching future episodes.

RustyBear · 01/03/2008 22:50

DD has just got back from a Dr Who convention in Dagenham - she got Tom Baker's autograph and also saw Anneke Wills, Jean Marsh and Sophie Aldred, though Sylvester McCoy pulled out.
DD's boyfriend took her for her 18th birthday, which was nice of him, as he was bored stiff - though he did get kissed by Sheridan Smith (who did the radio series with Paul McGann)

Nice to see DH and I have bred another geek!

serenity · 02/03/2008 01:19

It's fun when you can get the DCs into the same stuff as you are

serenity · 01/04/2008 23:42

So...........anyone excited? (and should we start a NEW NEW Doctor Who Geeks thread?)

mygirllollipop · 02/04/2008 10:33

I was thinking about posing that Q yesterday but got destracted by other threads,
Our lot are excited, even the 16 month old gets excited when she sees "do'tor".

serenity · 02/04/2008 10:52

I was watching the interview with RTD on the BBC this morning - there was a nice big clip of Saturdays episode which made the DCs very happy, plus an interview with DT on the BBC news webpage. It's like a flood at the end of a long, long drought

Chamomile · 02/04/2008 19:24

My DC's were rolling on the floor at the first sight of the new aliens

serenity · 02/04/2008 19:39

DT and Donna are on Jonathon Ross on Friday night if anyone's interested (See! Great big Who flavoured flood!)

SueBaroo · 02/04/2008 21:05

Takes deep breath

OOOOOOhhh yes. It is time to unleash the squee. Have you seen that bit in the trailer with Tennant doing some of his very best devastated-face acting? I'm thinking that, despite Russell T's protestations to the contrary, he is so going to kill off a companion this series...

serenity · 03/04/2008 00:59

Well......the only one it definitely can't be is Sarah Jane. If it's in the finale (which I think if he does do this, that is where it will be 'cos of comments I've heard about it) it's unlikely to be Rose as she'll hopefully be back in her alternate dimension by then, plus she's already gone once. So Martha or Donna. CT has only signed up for 1 season afaik so my money's on her

Oh, and of course I meant DT and CT (rather than 'Donna') are on JR.

I don't need to unleash the squee I'm afraid. I still in a state of squeeness after seeing DT in his pants tied to a bed on Friday Night Project
