old one

OP posts:

I actually think OG moderators get it right much more than any other board I've been on, tbh. They are good at seeing off personal attacks and they don't seem to lock a thread unless it's really neccessary. And if you start a thread on a topic already under discussion they point you to where when they lock the thread.

Plus they don't mind the Squee Squad posting endless photo's of DT in everything-he's-ever-been-in

serenity · 10/07/2007 12:02

OK I've registered (just have to wait for the email before I can wade in) I'm put out though as I couldn't be 'serenity' on there - I'm serenity on everything

SueBaroo · 10/07/2007 12:24

oo, oo..

serenity · 10/07/2007 12:37

Don't hold your breath - I'm now waiting for my second email, from a moderator, before I'm allowed in. I'm out for the afternoon, so I'll have to check it out tonight.

UnquietDad · 10/07/2007 12:55

SueBaroo - broadly you are right, and I think the OG moderators are very good at "cleaning up mess" - locking duplicate threads with pointers to the existing one, merging where necessary, stepping into heated arguments to remind people of the Code of Conduct and so on. That's not to say that certain mods don't have agendas, though - they are human and are not always totally impartial.

One thing I don't like about OG, especially in the Tenth Planet - and I'll be interested to know if you and serenity pick up on this too - is that there is sometimes quite a bit of parent-bashing and sneering at kids. (And if you thought our Madeleine McCann threads were hostile, people, you should see theirs!!) People are not always hauled up for it, whereas they are for the slightest hint of an "agenda" against other groups.

For various reasons, parents are in the minority on OG and I sometimes have to bite my virtual tongue and remind myself that I am arguing with someone who hasn't grown up yet, and is in fact nearer to their own childhood than to where I am.

SueBaroo · 10/07/2007 13:38

I'd agree with you about the parents thing, UQD - when the schedule was changed, I know it left some children of members broken-hearted because they would miss the last episode because of other commitments, and there was a lot of sneering about that.

ow82 · 10/07/2007 13:42

don't know if this is new/old news to you all, but I hear 3 things,

kylie is deffo in the xmas ep. catherine tate is the new companion althou freema is coming back in series 4and this is the worst bit (yes worse than catherine tate) after this series dr who will NOT be doing another series, but rather individual episodes throughout the year

how will I cope without DT on a sat night?

UnquietDad · 10/07/2007 14:15

ow82 - the first three things you mention are all true (Kylie, Catherine, Freema), but the last (one-offs) is unsubstantiated rumour.

ow82 · 10/07/2007 14:57

ah it was printed in erm the sun?? I think - that would explain a lot! lol.

so now I have a love of DT on one hand (and the dr, but a serious lothe of CT on teh other )

serenity · 10/07/2007 16:20

Anything in the Sun (whether DW related or not) should be taken with half a bucket of salt IMHO.

Well, I'm in but have absolutely no idea where to start, it's huge (bigger on the inside? sorry, couldn't resist) Total coincidence but I had a quick look at the Leisure Hive ([hmm) and first thread I clicked on was a 'why does anyone wants kids' thread I think I'll have to go and explore for a while once the DCs are in bed and DH is on kitchen duties.

UnquietDad · 11/07/2007 11:11

serenity - some of the Ask The Author threads are very friendly. The Keith Topping one is a riot - if you can keep up with all the in-jokes.

butterbeer · 11/07/2007 11:15

Am on OG, but have never posted. Or read much, to be honest. I go on to check out particular topics then scurry away like a startled cockroach.

UnquietDad · 11/07/2007 15:49

Opening two minutes of this clip have to be somewhere in my All-Time Top 5 Doctor Who Moments. From the final "old" story. It's so powerful and well-directed! (Some people don't like it, but I think it's one of the best of the late 80s stories.)

SueBaroo · 11/07/2007 16:15

lol @ comments -

"Note to self, when chased by a cheetah on a horse, have a go on the slide"

made me remember being a kid and pretending I was Ace in local playgrounds. I was a solitary child...

SueBaroo · 11/07/2007 16:16

btw, seen the pics of Kylie and the Doctor today? here

foxinsocks · 11/07/2007 16:19

how funny that they sneer on OG

it is, after all, essentially a children's programme (with the emphasis on family viewing)

UnquietDad · 11/07/2007 16:35

Nice BOOTS, Kylie!!

I'm going to enjoy it, I can tell already...

UnquietDad · 11/07/2007 16:35

UnquietDad · 11/07/2007 16:35

Is there an echo in here??

UnquietDad · 11/07/2007 16:44

Ooh, and she is called ASTRID...

How very interesting...

fox - the sneerage is mostly in the non-Who topics, to be fair.

SueBaroo · 11/07/2007 16:50

And sneerage like that is fairly common online, tbh. We only escape it here because you'd have to be mildly masochistic to attempt to sneer at parents on a parenting site with next to no moderation...

foxinsocks · 11/07/2007 16:55

Astrid = tardis n'est ce pas

I only read digital spy (wrt TV) in addition to this so have no experience of OG.

serenity · 11/07/2007 17:21

Very cool boots, but.......not sure what else I can say really - would discussing the picture be a spoiler?

serenity · 11/07/2007 17:24

and atm I'm sticking to the S4 thread on OG (the one where lots of people in Cardiff stalk the filmsets and post pictures )

I'm so tempted to pack the DCs up on the first day of the holidays and take them for a nice day trip to cardiff. I think that would qualify as hugely slack parenting on my part

SueBaroo · 11/07/2007 17:25

The Doctor doesn't look like he's wearing regulation pinstripes to me. Is it another DJ-squee opportunity, I wonder?
