Is anyone planning on watching this?

I read the books and found them compelling but in a trashy kind of way Twilight meets Fifty Shades via witchcraft.

Not sure about the casting but I'm absolutely giving it a go tonight

Seen 1&3. Does it get better

Unobtainable · 06/10/2018 15:31

That kiss at the end of E3

They are excellent together and I’m loving the whole romantic, soft-focus theme, including the outstanding cinematography for Oxford, Venice and now France.

The dancing was brilliant but I did have to go back and check what Matthew was marvelling at as I didnt notice what was happening to Diana’s skin.

I cant believe some people are saying that Diana is plain either; I think she’s luminous and beautiful. Oh yes, and Matthew good’s voice is outstanding. He should do audio books and voice overs!

Unobtainable · 06/10/2018 20:04

It’s never bothered me when a film or TV adaptation doesn’t follow the book. I just see it as another version, another telling, to enjoy again through different eyes.

sparklelike · 07/10/2018 08:02

The real question consuming me today is where did they get those lovely drop earrings Diana wears in the tango scene? I’m still on the fence about Goode’s attack face, it’s properly sinister I’ll give it that.

Ysabeau was always going to be a tough cast, matchlessly elegant and chic - Lindsay Duncan doesn’t look in her 30s but she does have the elegance - lovely outfits, liked the furry lined dress!

MynameisJune · 07/10/2018 08:10

I was hugely unimpressed with Ysabeau’s casting I’m afraid. She is young in the book because she is a vampire. They don’t age and get wrinkles. It’s fantasy and as such I’d like it to at least follow that premise!

IFeelSorryForMillie · 07/10/2018 08:32

also no French accent? there must be tons of unknown french atresses out there that could have pulled off the elegance of Ysabeau with a beautiful accent to go along with it.

Unobtainable I agree and normally I can do both book and film/TV adaptations. My mistake was picking the book up mid series, because I was impatient for the next episode.

Unobtainable · 07/10/2018 09:41

Ifeelsorryformillie Yes, the lack of French accents was jarring for me too but it’s easily overlooked.

I thought the castle was outstanding. I’m assuming that it’s CGI.

EmmaJR1 · 07/10/2018 14:14

@MynameisJune just watching Fridays episode and I absolutely concur! I'm so disappointed in that casting decision- she's not at all what I thought Ysabea would be like.

cushioncovers · 07/10/2018 22:36

I'm enjoying it.

MistressDeeCee · 07/10/2018 23:18

I like it.

Apart from finding Diana utterly charisma-free, and being ever so slightly irritated that Matthew says 'hmm' a lot, in response to being asked or told something.

I will stick with it. Hope there's some more action beyond the Love Story thing though, I want to see more magic

TheThirdOfHerName · 10/10/2018 07:35

I'm not fussed about the lack of French accent. The DeClermonts have been speaking English for centuries, have all spent time in England and are experts at blending in.

weaving5688 · 10/10/2018 09:52

yes it's possible that Ysabeau has a perfect English accent - it's mostly the age that feels off, she's supposed to look in her 30s and much as I love lindsay duncan and beautiful as she is (and that's why i'm not upset about the casting), it'd be a stretch to imagine that she looks like she's in her 30s. I suppose it's good that it's a good role for an older actress though, one way the TV adaptation is better perhaps?

NigellasGuest · 10/10/2018 10:00

Ooh I think Eva Green should have had the Lindsey Duncan role. Anyone see her in Penny Dreadful? Amazing!

Cataline · 10/10/2018 17:10

Has anyone spotted that episode 5 is not due to air until January?
Or at least that's what it says on NowTV. I don't know if Sky is any different.

I really really hope this isn't the case as it's only just started to get going!

Pooleschoolschoice · 10/10/2018 17:19

Nooooo. Ill cancel my nowtv for a bit if so!

NotANotMan · 10/10/2018 17:21

Don't panic, it says 1st January every week! No idea why

Pooleschoolschoice · 10/10/2018 17:26

Hmm wikipedia says every week til jan but now tv says 4 episodes up til 4th december....

PawneeParksDept · 12/10/2018 21:58

Gillian lived. Damn shame

I agree Ysabeau is all wrong.

Weird sex scene, did they actually do it? In the books it takes them ages to have sex though - I'm half way through second and given up now as the second book is really boring - and they've still not done it.

I think I'm over invested.

VforVienetta · 13/10/2018 10:31

I actually looked up 'bundling'...

cushioncovers · 13/10/2018 11:24

Me too. Grin

Somerville · 13/10/2018 11:55

did they actually do it?

Not that we saw.
Despite Matthew being a vampire rather than a witch, he clearly has magic fingers however. Grin

cushioncovers · 13/10/2018 12:46

Magic fingers indeed, that can work it's magic through denim jeans😂

DurtySarf · 13/10/2018 15:56

Maybe it's not his fingers that are magic. I mean, she's the one with the magic powers. Wink

ShinyElena · 13/10/2018 18:45

They have done the deed yet. If they broke the covenant right at the beginning, it would be all-out war straight away and they would not be able tease it out forever.

I have read all three books, but I prefer the tv programme. The books could have done with some editing.
