The film is excellent but I'm not impressed with this series so far.

I've read the book and seen the film, and don't recall all the homo-erotic hints. Most of the characters and back stories are not in the book, anyway. Mrs Appleyard is just a strict but not cruel head teacher. Really hope the little girl is reunited with her brother but can't somehow see a happy ending.

icelolly99 · 08/08/2018 21:51

Whaaat?!.....5 episodes in and I don't really know what's happening and how it will end. I hope there's a 'proper' ending and resolution.

MrStarkIDontFeelSoGood · 08/08/2018 22:01

Well !

That episode was incredibly odd in every way and without resolution.

Think Mrs Appleyard has murdered Sarah, hence the maggots on shoe Sad

Is it possible that Miranda was killed and Marion and the teacher she was in love with ran away?

Irma knows something.

LighthouseSouth · 08/08/2018 22:17

I like that they call Irma "Irmalette" Smile

I have a feeling they are going to change the ending...such as it was, with the "missing" last chapter etc.

I don't know if the film did the "missing" last chapter either, does anyone know?

it seems like most posters on the thread are interpreting Mrs Appleyard and Sarah very differently than I am, which also makes me think that a different ending to the book is coming.

Blondeshavemorefun · 10/08/2018 14:09

Sighs

I’ve invested so many hours I will watch the end - think next week?

But how can a film prob 1.5/2hrs long get made into a series of 6hrs

Seems a lot of woffle

ellenanora5 · 10/08/2018 16:14

Miss Appleyard is clearly losing the plot, it seems she was taken out of an orphanage when she was a child and used for god knows what, so I'm wondering if her hatred for Sarah was because she was similar but also jealous of her because she got a much better deal when she got out of her orphanage i.e. a good guardian and a chance of an education.

The doctor is in love with her so she could just go off with him and start again like he suggested.

Is she on her own now in the college, have all the others gone.

CaramelAngel · 10/08/2018 17:16

At one point Miranda said to Irma. "You know who you remind me of..Mrs Appleyard." I assumed Mrs A was sexually abused after being taken out of the orphanage and there's a link with Irma in that her stepdad tried it on with her and the mother blamed her and sent her away. Mademoiselle said to Irma "A mother always puts her children before her husband" and she looked doubtful.

Dora Lumley looks different in real life

Anyone watching Picnic at Hanging Rock?
PickwickThePlockingDodo · 10/08/2018 18:17

Blimey, she does look different Shock

LighthouseSouth · 11/08/2018 00:55

Ive probably missed something important Blush

Why do some posters think Miss Appleyard "hates" Sarah?

Blondeshavemorefun · 11/08/2018 08:05

Because she stopped her from going on trip

Clawdy · 11/08/2018 08:08

And slapped her across the face. Although there was a scene where they were both singing a song together, I think.

Blondeshavemorefun · 11/08/2018 08:12

Plus she stole her tin when gettin drunk when the other girl got hands whipped

Tho not sure she knows she took her tin

Maybe be jealousy due to childhood and no nice guardian

LeafcutterAnt · 11/08/2018 09:40

Was the letter Mlle De Poitiers helped Bertie write to do with looking for Sara? If so surely it would have contained her name so Mlle De Poitiers would have been able to tell him she was in the college.

MrStarkIDontFeelSoGood · 11/08/2018 11:27

No it was a thank you to the rich boy he worked for. I was hoping it was for Sarah

LighthouseSouth · 11/08/2018 12:26

I think she stopped her from going on the trip because she didn't want her out of her sight

and the slap, not good, but keeping up appearances among other girls

the tin contains something that presumably might lead to Sarah's freedom when Mrs Appleyard doesn't want her to go away. Now Sarah has gone away, Mrs A has fallen apart.

could Mrs Appleyard be Sarah's mum, or just be deeply fond of her?

I don't remember the book at all really so not guessing from there.

LighthouseSouth · 11/08/2018 12:28

the letter Mlle helped with was to arrange meeting the rich man Bertie worked for and I thought there was an angle of helping them to meet so they could get together properly.

Dragonlight · 11/08/2018 12:49

No there's no lesbianism in the original but there are references to teen girls budding sexuality and victorian repression of such. It's beautifully and subtly done though.

I was at hanging rock last week. Such a beautiful place and very haunting in it's own way.

LadyRochfordsHoickedGusset · 11/08/2018 12:52

Lucky you Dragonlight! Would love to see it.

LighthouseSouth · 11/08/2018 12:56

oh wow, I would love to see that in real life! Was it very busy with tourists?

Dragonlight · 11/08/2018 13:02

Not when we went but it was raining. Perfect for peace and quiet. They have a visitor centre with statues of the girls and information about the book and movie too!

LighthouseSouth · 12/08/2018 11:26

ah, Dragonlight, sounds amazing!

CSIblonde · 12/08/2018 21:46

It's very like Lizzie Borden with Christina Ricci: Surreal, black humour, twisted: & very, very very dark. I'm sticking with it as dark & black humour is my thing. The film was fantastic.

Samb79 · 12/08/2018 22:09

Do you watch Orange is the New Black? The actress who plays Dora Lumley is in it, the hopeless romantic lesbian that was in a relationship with Nikki!

MrStarkIDontFeelSoGood · 13/08/2018 02:09

That's the same actress?!?? GET OUT! Shock
