The film is excellent but I'm not impressed with this series so far.

Going to watch it later but just remembered the book reminded me a lot of The Virgin Suicides (without the colonial Australian stuff).

AnyFucker · 13/07/2018 07:38

I enjoyed it

HRTpatch · 13/07/2018 07:39

Looking forward to catching up with this.
The film was so languid

Starlight345 · 13/07/2018 07:41

I saw it was on and thought it was the film and had missed most of it

Hygge · 13/07/2018 11:03

@maxthemartian - steampunk, that's the word I was looking for.

It did have something of that look about it.

skinnysyrup · 13/07/2018 13:01

I thought it was brilliant. I vaguely remember watching the film when I was younger and finding it very unnerving.
This new version is sooooo much better, Natalie Dormer's acting is fantastic and I love the whole look of the film, music included.
Wonder if Sara is Miss Appleyard's child who she had to place in an orphanage temporarily? She was so horrible to her 😢 and when she said she knew her father and went on to describe the devil. Miss Appleyard obviously has a seedy past.
Also, who was the man staring at her when she 'woke' from her nap only to realise she was still asleep....someone from her past?
Can't wait for the next episode......

skinnysyrup · 13/07/2018 13:02

It's on bbc iPlayer btw 👍

beanaseireann · 14/07/2018 07:06

I saw the film years ago.
I thought it was a true story ShockHmm
But it's not.
I didn't really like the first episode but will persevere.
Why was Sarah made stay back ?
What was in the tin ?

Killybashangel · 14/07/2018 12:36

I think what was in the tin revealed Mrs Appleyard's past life.
Sara was made to stay back to punish Miranda for the stable incident. Mrs A felt it would punish her more than keeping her back herself. (I don't know why - don't think it's been revealed yet)

Wishfulmakeupping · 14/07/2018 17:31

Just watched the first episode one iPlayer am hooked already

Polarbearflavour · 14/07/2018 21:29

Hmmm it’s very odd! And yes, it’s very steampunk esque!

Clawdy · 14/07/2018 22:18

Strange but atmospheric. Not really got who is who amongst the girls yet. Wish it was only in three or four episodes.

LadyRochfordsHoickedGusset · 16/07/2018 08:11

I loved it. They've injected more humour and weirdness into it. Agree about Natalie Dormer Skinny.

beanaseireann · 16/07/2018 08:20

Thank you Killybashangel

StarbucksSmarterSister · 16/07/2018 11:39

Read the book and watched the film of course, years ago.

Don't rate this at all so far but will give it one more episode. The film is so atmospheric from the get-go but to me this is just weird, and not in a good way. I don't find it remotely chilling.

beanaseireann · 16/07/2018 16:52

It's trying to be achingly cool.

headinhands · 17/07/2018 04:36

Love it's spacey haziness. Don't think clannad was any more in keeping with the Victorian era was it? Think they did the music to the original.

beanaseireann · 17/07/2018 09:38

'Spacey haziness'
Smile

headinhands · 17/07/2018 10:26

Sometimes it's okay to be cool isn't it? I'd probable watch soaps if they were filmed so darkly Grin

Gheorge Zamfir did the theme music.

headinhands · 17/07/2018 22:48

Ooh. That music sends shivers through me even now. Not sure why I thought it was Clannad

cushioncovers · 18/07/2018 09:58

I enjoyed it.

Ikeameatballs · 18/07/2018 22:50

So.....

The cake was laced with a sedative?
The nephew is gay
Is Albert Sara’s brother?
Hester and her husband were a criminal duo?

Clawdy · 19/07/2018 10:09

I'm not sure how the little girl was able to shout "Shut up, you evil goblin" at the sadistic teacher without being punished.

JuliaSevern · 19/07/2018 16:26

I think the evil goblin was so overcome with emotion at her own dramatic description of Jesus on the cross that she went down the "forgive the little child" route rather than punish her.
