The film is excellent but I'm not impressed with this series so far.

I know right!

Cannothtinkofaname · 13/08/2018 08:33

I've been watching this while doing my ironing and not that mad on it but sticking with it. I also find it a bit confusing.

Where did Mrs Appleyard get her money from? And some of it is so dark I can't see what is happening!

I'm on to episode 4 next, just hope it livens up a bit.

Samb79 · 15/08/2018 21:51

Gaaaahh!!!

SinisterBumFacedCat · 15/08/2018 22:02

Yep, no resolution. Fgs

Clawdy · 15/08/2018 22:07

After so many hours, we needed a bit more explanation. I assume the girls jumped - but what about the teacher? And how did little Sarah die? Out of all the grimness, couldn't they give her a happy ending? Sad

Bouledeneige · 15/08/2018 22:09

I've watched all the way through - not entirely sure what the heck happened in the final episode.

Arty, atmospheric, interesting. Not a clue what happened.

Rebecca36 · 15/08/2018 22:13

I am none the wiser either but I remember reading the book, years ago and saw a film of the same and was confused by those.

Apparently the writer did do a sequel which explained things but from what I have read of it, it's weirder than ever.

Well I can't say I'm sorry it's over, I was so determined to stick with it and I did but now I'm liberated.

LighthouseSouth · 15/08/2018 22:23

The writer didn't write a sequel

Her stupid publisher decided the book would be better without the final chapter but it was eventually released.

If you google you will find all the info.....I must go to bed as I was basically up all night but links should be easy to find. I loved it all, thought it very well done, though I'll never get over poor Miranda's hands Sad

Samb79 · 15/08/2018 22:37

This is the final chapter here:

carusopascoski.files.wordpress.com/2015/06/secret_hanging_rock.pdf

And I am still none the wiser!

LeafcutterAnt · 15/08/2018 22:54

I don't think the book and subsequent film would have been as successful as they were if Joan Lindsay hadn't agreed to remove the resolution before publication and make the ending mysterious. I think it was inspired, especially as the original ending (which you can find here en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Picnic_at_Hanging_Rock_(novel) was a bit of an anti climax IMO.
I think this series was a pretty good interpretation and i enjoyed it a lot.

CSIblonde · 16/08/2018 00:09

Just watched last episode. So Mrs Appleyard murdered the girls because they knew she was a fraud? The blonde teacher had sussed her even without the tin she got her fake name off - due to glaring social etiquette mistakes. So many flashback it was hard to to keep up/follow.

MipMipMip · 16/08/2018 00:14

Just watched the last episode. What the actual fuck!?

MipMipMip · 16/08/2018 00:19

OK, now read that Wikipedia entry. Can see why they didn't include it. I repeat : what the fuck?!

ellenanora5 · 16/08/2018 02:04

Well that's over, didn't enjoy but I was intrigued.

So if the girls had a vow to kill themselves how come Irma survived, did she change her mind.

Did Miss Appleyard kill Sarah, what did she mean by "I told the wrong lie"

What was the point of the fire.

What was the point of Fitzhubert following them.

I'm bloody confused.

Clawdy · 16/08/2018 09:25

Mrs Appleyard didn't kill the girls, surely? She wasn't on the picnic.Did she kill Sarah? If, so, why? Too many questions!

Tournesol · 16/08/2018 09:44

I loved it! I liked the way they left it ambiguous as it fitted with the spooky other worldly vibe.
My reading of the ending was that Marion, Ms Mcgraw and Miranda were all unconventional and wanted to be free from social conventions and so they escaped (either through suicide or just ran away). Irma however decided at last moment that she did want to conform (get married etc) so she went back on the vow but did not reveal the pact or what happened to protect them.
Sarah wanted to be part of vow but wasn't so killed herself.
Mrs Appleyard couldn't escape terrible past but realised who she had been running from was actually dead but still felt haunted so also killed herself.
Not very cheery but all analogies of escaping social convention.

Clawdy · 16/08/2018 10:38

Saw a interesting theory on an Australian website. One of the producers said maybe the girls are not real, they are all in Mrs A's head, different versions of what she could have been, brainy one, beautiful one, rebel, and little orphan girl rescued by rich benefactor!

LighthouseSouth · 16/08/2018 11:41

I can't believe anyone thought Mrs Appleyard killed the girls!

okay, having thought it through, if I hadn't read it, I might think that.

I was a bit worried I'd cry and cry and cry when Mrs A killed herself but I was probably too tired. And I thought how they did the girls' pact was beautiful.

and poor Mlle saying "she is MY child now" to that useless benefactor...

mumtothebabes123 · 16/08/2018 12:35

Well that was shit 😭
Feel so frustrated

DaisyChainsForever · 16/08/2018 13:49

I feel like i need more answers! i'm glad i'm not the only one that didn't understand the last episode Grin

MipMipMip · 16/08/2018 14:19

Ooh I like the different versions of Mrs Applegate. That would have been great!

Sarah's head is meant to be crushed as if she fell from the tower that wasn't near enough.

I thought the "wrong lie" bit was because she lied and said Sarah went with Mr Cosgrove, which got found out. She should have said a different lie to cover up Sarah's disappearance.

notaswarmtomorrow · 16/08/2018 17:26

I absolutely loved it, the weirdness was right up my street. Natalie Dormer was superb. The girls can't have jumped, they didn't find their bodies.

I was thinking of some sort of supernatural time shift, when she climbed up at the end that she would go back in time to when they were up there still alive?

Loved the score, scenery and atmosphere - will miss it.

LighthouseSouth · 16/08/2018 19:40

" The girls can't have jumped, they didn't find their bodies."

exactly.

the BBC page shows the actresses talking about the time space continuum.....all fascinating.

tbh I really only watched it for Natalie Dormer; I found the book disappointing but I'd watch her reading betting odds. I'm so glad I did because now the book makes sense, all the characters make sense...and so many small touches were just incredibly high quality.

and one day maybe I'll see Hanging Rock. I wonder if it's hard to climb? They made it look easy but of course it won't be like that!

cushioncovers · 18/08/2018 09:57

Well I didn't understand the last episode at all.

LadyRochfordsHoickedGusset · 18/08/2018 11:36

The ending was meant to be a mystery. You're left to gather your own conclusions. My favourite is that some ancient Aboriginal spirituality was at play - connected with the rock. To do with the confined roles young women had at that time.
