Harumph
Weren’t we all waiting for a twist because the writer had said weeks back, no ones got it yet? I’ll try and find it...

Etino · 20/08/2018 12:58

Misdirection from the writer IMO

icelollycraving · 20/08/2018 13:40

I was a bit disappointed with the end. It was very good but I expected more of a twist.

CoolCarrie · 20/08/2018 13:41

The banality of evil sums him up. A total psycho unlike the murderers in the earlier series, maybe that was the twist They were all normal people who acted out of character, for revenge , where as he had power of life and death over his patients, in a position of trust. I think the second series was the best one, but this was very good, the writer is excellent.

Clawdy · 20/08/2018 13:44

I don't think there will be any follow-up to these crimes in the next series, they have never done that before. And any suspense on the "whodunnit" front would be non-existent. Hoping Nicola Walker returns, or I won't be half as keen to watch it!

magicroundabouts · 20/08/2018 13:45

What made it so chilling for me was that Tim was unpleasant from the start. He was hiding in plain sight.

The scene when he confessed and you see him look towards Cassie and he just looks intrigued by her emotion, as if he can't fathom why anyone would find what he did upsetting. And then when he said that Hayley didn't suffer when she was strangled as she would have been unconscious in 20 seconds. The fact that she had just been raped didn't even seem to enter his head. Utterly terrifying.

Guienne · 20/08/2018 13:52

If we're talking about roles Alex Jennings has been great in, don't let's forget his very recent performance as Peter Bessell in A Very English Scandal. He was excellent.

Also Albert's Uncle Leopold in Victoria.

Irrelevant factoid I heard about Kevin McNally: he's known for being one of those reliable actors who's always in work. Apparently actors get seriously worried about how bad things are in the profession if he's "resting".

diddl · 20/08/2018 14:37

Was the "twist" that he was a serial killer?

I still can't get over the pants!

They reminded me of girdle pants that my mum occasionally wore in the late 60s!

Wrre they supposed to denote a particular style/make/era??

southeastdweller · 20/08/2018 14:43

Yes I think it was about him being a serial killer but the twist left me feeling emotionless and I agree that it was bad writing that we saw no discussion about Tim’s crimes with his friends and family. This series was such a let down after the previous two.

RoseWhiteTips · 20/08/2018 14:53

Nicola Walker is indeed a very good actresss but barring when she played Ruth in Spooks, she tends to use a certain style of delivery in her roles. Still fantastic though.

RoseWhiteTips · 20/08/2018 14:54

Kevin McNally was so good in his role. Great actor.

magicroundabouts · 20/08/2018 15:00

I thought the pants were to show how young she was. As in the kind of pants your Mum would buy you
because they are comfortable.

Guienne · 20/08/2018 15:08

I don't think this series was a let-down at all. It's become so commonplace for series like this to have a twist at the end that it's no longer a twist, IYSWIM. This was much more subtle.

I wondered whether, at the end, Tim was looking to set up some sort of defence of insanity. When Sunny made the "Silence of the Lambs" comment he looked a bit disconcerted as if aware that it wasn't going to work.

HesterMacaulay · 20/08/2018 15:12

Why did he only have 'trophies' from one of the murders? Felt like it was just a rather lazy plot device to provide physical evidence.
Tracking down his Audi and linking the tyre and possible foresensics would have felt more satisfying. But that wouldn't have led to the discovery thst he was a serial killer psychopath...

Haquina · 20/08/2018 15:36

Re the flashbacks, this is from an interview with Chris Lang, which can be found on Den of Geek.

Tell me about the use of flashbacks in the show. Those little bursts of montage, you know that these days viewers are going to pause and screengrab them. Are there clues to find in them or is it more expressionist and symbolic?
Exactly, the latter. They’re extremely elliptical and deliberately so, because obviously I’m aware that people will pause to look at it and if there was anything revealed in them, then it wouldn’t stay in. They’re elliptical, they’re fragments, just fragments of memories all of which could be implicatory or could be quite innocent. The truth is most of the characters have got secrets, so they refer to their secrets rather than particularly the crime.

On the whole I enjoyed the series despite a few rankles e.g. the trophies only from one victim, Tim's implausible explanation, he's cleverer than that. I can also see how he got away with it for so long and why he was able to persuade people his first wife was lying about how he treated her. I'm still convinced his second wife kept her secrets.

diddl · 20/08/2018 16:35

" "and you can stop with all the Hannibal Lecter shit" "

I though it was schtick?

PrincessMargaret · 20/08/2018 17:09

I am so sad it has ended.

RoseWhiteTips · 20/08/2018 17:13

Tim wasn’t quite so emotionless at various points during the prison visit. He looked as if he was being roughed up regularly.

FawnDrench · 20/08/2018 17:24

Oops Diddl - yes I think you are right!
Either way it was a good line...

QueenOfTheAndals · 20/08/2018 17:28

I noticed that too @RoseWhiteTips, and fairly true to life as nonces apparently get a notoriously hard time in prison.

Theknacktoflying · 20/08/2018 17:40

I liked the fact that the series left the gore out of it - and was made the reactions more realistic.

CoolCarrie · 20/08/2018 17:48

A young curly haired Alex Jennings is in Morse on ITV3 at the moment!

freshstart24 · 20/08/2018 18:03

I loved this series.

I think maybe the blogger angle was to try to illustrate how quickly things can get out of hand when the internet and social media get their grips into a crime.....

Springersrock · 20/08/2018 18:07

I loved this series, although Nicola Walker was beginning to get on my wick. I do love her most of the time, but towards the end she was getting on my nerves

Did I miss something with Chris/Dr Tim and the credit card/downloading child abuse images?

I thought they’d said he was a victim of a mass card cloning, I can’t remember mention of Dr Tim being involved in it

QueenOfTheAndals · 20/08/2018 18:15

I think Chris's credit card genuinely was part of mass card fraud and nothing to do with Tim. It's just an assumption that's been made on this thread - along with "the copper did it" and "there was a twin swap"!
