Starts on Sunday on ITV1.

Mmmgoats- good theory. Yes feeding his psychopathy regularly seeing the power he has.

RapidlyGoingMad · 19/08/2018 23:16

The calmness was chilling, but very true to life. Recently the police released the 999 call of a man (possibly a UKIP councillor I think) who had murdered his wife minutes earlier. Completely calm, it was awful to listen to. And in Unforgotten he'd had years before he had to talk about it.

However, the sociopath/psychopath doesn't quite ring true for me either. They were very in touch and good friends for middle-aged men and he did so much for Chris - unless as pp have said, he just did it to appear caring?

RapidlyGoingMad · 19/08/2018 23:19

Also agree about not knowing what you did 20 years ago - I couldn't tell you what I ate or did last Sunday off the top of my head, never mind 20 years ago!

Graphista · 19/08/2018 23:22

Remember - they're highly intelligent and very good at "faking it" - faking being human, being caring. They're apparently often good mimics, I've something in the back of my mind about a serial killer who was a good impersonator can't think who it was.

Rebecca36 · 19/08/2018 23:23

He was a classic psychopath. It was very chilling, I hadn't a clue that it would turn out like that. Gave me the shudders.

However, good ending, people moving on with their lives and being happy again.

Graphista · 19/08/2018 23:30

People's ability to recall events varies. We never truly forget anything, but some things hold more meaning for us and that translates into how the memory is stored and recalled.

I have a stupidly accurate memory on some things and crap on others.

Things with a narrative I remember very easily, but 'dry' (to me) facts I struggle with.

I have very strong memories of Millenium Eve for personal reasons. Plus as a significant event most people will remember roughly where they were and what they were doing. Whereas for any other New Year's Eve, barring personal significance, most of us will struggle to remember much about them.

Eg if a policeman asks you what you were doing on X date X many years ago if it's a random date, you'll probably struggle. But if that date was your birthday, or anniversary, or a date someone you loved died...you'll likely remember more about it.

EachandEveryone · 20/08/2018 00:39

What did the mum mean when she said the dad could visit them and they could visit him?

Theres no stopping Nicola Walker now she's so brilliant.

sleepyhead · 20/08/2018 00:56

I thought the contrast between the psychopath who (literally) couldn't care and Cassie who was cracking up because she cared too much was really striking.

I assumed that the writers were basically removing the likelihood of a series 3 tbh and that Cassie would retire so I'm quite surprised that a fourth is planned.

buzz91 · 20/08/2018 01:03

I’m annoyed that there was no reveal on screen that it had been Tim that used Chris’s credit card, although maybe you’re supposed to be left with unease towards him, thinking that maybe he did have those perverse tendencies and that’s why him and Tim seemed the closest of the friends?

I assumed that showing Sunni with the other police officer speaking to Tim is testing the new dynamic of series 4 without Cassie? I do like Nicola Walker but the constant long breathy pauses were in annoying full swing this series.

People were sharing what they remember Alex Jennings in; for me it’s the Butler in Joseph and the technicolour dream coat! Very different role Grin

JackReacherReader · 20/08/2018 03:37

I feel a bit bereft! What do I do now I've binge watched this!?

If we've frigging loved this, and the loch? What else can we binge watch a lot of? Grin

Karting1967 · 20/08/2018 06:46

Anyone else not impressed about how Cassie was written in this series? Making a mistake that indirectly led to a murder, unable to cope and see the case through to conclusion...

Loopytiles · 20/08/2018 08:02

Thought Sanjeev Bhaskar nailed the disgusted but detached and professional face!

Loopytiles · 20/08/2018 08:03

Yes, a bit of a stereotypical “woman can’t cope and needs to be rescued by men”

hackmum · 20/08/2018 08:10

If we're talking about roles Alex Jennings has been great in, don't let's forget his very recent performance as Peter Bessell in A Very English Scandal. He was excellent.

Still can't make my mind up about that last episode. In the first episode, Tim was set up as being obviously a very nasty character who was good at hiding his nastiness - that was all shown in the GMC hearing. But the very fact that he was being set up in that way would normally be a good indication that that person isn't the murderer. So the twist in the final episode was that there was no twist. Having watched so many of these things now (The Killing, The Bridge, Broadchurch, Hinterland, Shetland etc etc) that's very unusual.

hackmum · 20/08/2018 08:11

Also I was a bit misled by the Radio Times previews, which talked about a revelation being "devastating" for Cassie. I'd assumed this meant the detective love interest was involved in some way. But he wasn't.

buttybuttybutthole · 20/08/2018 08:41

The endi g was satisfactory but the way Tim was played left me wanting more. The way he looked at Cassie was so believable- so condescending of women.

I think Tim Helped Chris because he feared Chris knew it was him who used his credit card, although pretty sure Chris in his willing to see the good in everyone just thought Tim was being a good friend.

The twist was that we were led to believe it wasn't Tim when actually the mementos were from another victim.

Loved how they wrapped it up for everyone. Shed some tears for James and Elliot and Chris .

Not sure about the flash backs though!

hackmum · 20/08/2018 09:31

JackReacherRead: "If we've frigging loved this, and the loch? What else can we binge watch a lot of?"

I watch a ton of this kind of stuff. One of my favourites is Shetland, which is just brilliant, and I think there have been three series so far, so it should keep you going for a while. Hinterland is also excellent, and got better as time went on.

Am also a fan of No Offence, a very different kind of police procedural with loads of dark humour, and which is about to start a third series in September.

RapidlyGoingMad · 20/08/2018 09:46

I thought the credit card bit was more of a mass thing - like multiple cards cloned affecting lots of people - or was it just a one-off? Maybe I missed something there.

fascicle · 20/08/2018 10:31

I thought it was absolute rubbish with far too much time devoted to Tim and his newly revealed crimes - fresh content that did not have to slot in with previously given information. Although there were plenty of tears, hugs and tactile moments, there was a near total absence of discussion about Tim amongst friends and family after he was charged. I thought the episode was flabbily written and mawkish. I was hoping for something more dynamic and clever.

EachandEveryone · 20/08/2018 10:39

I didnt understand where the flash backs came nto it

tribpot · 20/08/2018 11:00

I agree, fascicle - it didn't really make any sense. And there were way too many close-ups of faces (second wives, Hayley's mum) suggesting they were still hiding things. Plus the flashbacks - what?

It was never really explained why Cassie appeared to be forgetting things (and thinking it was her dad). Stress?

buttybuttybutthole · 20/08/2018 11:16

Have to say I felt like there was ambiguity, for example when James and Chris said they were 'lucky'. Some facial expressions suggesting that the Hayley murder WAS something to do with them or they did know something. But maybe that was underlying guilt at the happenings unrelated to the murder.

supercalifragilistic2 · 20/08/2018 12:05

Didn't think that the last episode was that great (nor this series).

The flashbacks throughout sort of went unanswered; so I think Chris's flashback included lots of blood, but he wasn't involved in anything Confused. I may have missed it, but who did Elliot actually run down in the end?

I wonder if the last episode is designed to set up the next series, so the other woman and sunny following the cases of the people that Tim murdered?

I'm guessing Cassie has been reprimanded etc, her dialog with sunny suggested that she had been away for the 3 months.

I sort of wanted it to be the bloke that Cassie liked who had done the murder Grin

FawnDrench · 20/08/2018 12:35

I loved Sunny's line to Tim in the prison - "and you can stop with all the Hannibal Lecter shit" after he was letching after the female detective.
