Questions I have at the end of this are:
Why was he so good to Chris? He went out of his way to take care of him. Bizarre when he stated to the police that he wouldn't care if he never saw any of his friends every again.
How many young girls did he kill? He seemed to be drip-feeding information to the police whilst in prison as part of his control thing, but I would have liked to know how many unsolved cases his arrest solved.
Would liked to have seen his wife number 2 admitting that something wasn't right with him. Also the loyal daughter, what did she think?
And what made his older daughter have her doubts and go to interview her mother? Did I miss something there?
Would have liked to have had the case of him abusing the elderly patient re-opened. He obviously was vile to her.

All in all - a great series and I shall miss it. What next to watch?

Graphista · 19/08/2018 22:36

Re the address being broadcast - other serial killers addresses have been broadcast, I particularly remember Cromwell street being in news reports.

How the hell do the wives of these creeps feel? Either they know - and aren't much better! Or they have no clue (and I can well believe it with some of the more clever ones) and it must be a sickening shock!

Theonlylivingmum - that's actually to my mind the MOST unrealistic factor - that he didn't abuse his daughters. They would have fit his parameters for what children he was attracted to at the point they hit those ages. In real life cases it's often been revealed after they're caught, that they were abusing those that fit their preferences that were also available to them.

southeastdweller · 19/08/2018 22:36

I think Tim being nice to Chris was a lazy way to make us think that Tim has a good side when as we've seen tonight, he has no empathy.

MurunBuchstansagur · 19/08/2018 22:37

I’ve been rewatching Being Human on Netflix and Alex Jennings was good in that too (played a vampire called Griffin).

Funnily enough it was an episode of BH where I first saw Nicola Walker. I was immediately struck by how good she is. She’s just so mesmerisingly watchable.

ClandestineAdulation · 19/08/2018 22:38

Surely he was so kind to Chris because he was responsible for ruining his life, ultimately? The child pornography must’ve been down to Tim, and so he felt a responsibility to Chris to do his best by him after everything else crashed and burned?

WinterHoliday · 19/08/2018 22:38

I loved it. So glad there wasn't a twin swap plot.

I like the idea that after the twists in the first two series, in this one the killer was one of the original suspects.

I was pondering why Tim was nice to Chris. I guess he liked the fact that Chris looked up to him and would be grateful for his help and support. And it also fitted his persona of being a nice, caring doctor - the last person someone would suspect of being a serial killer.

Graphista · 19/08/2018 22:40

Re daughter who got suss - no smoke without fire plus not blinded by love/loyalty like the other daughter.

2 patient accusations (remember at the beginning things being said like "just like last time, there's no proof" etc)

Tangled up in Hayley's murder

Mum then makes accusations...

That's a lot that suggests he's not so nice!

NancyJoan · 19/08/2018 22:42

@Graphista, when then showed the outside of the prison, it came up with 3 Months Later on the screen, and the funeral was after that. So, even if Tim was arrested within a day or two of Pete’s death, it was at least 3 months before the funeral. I wonder if they got person who stabbed him.

QueenOfTheAndals · 19/08/2018 22:43

@MurunBuchstansagur I didn't realise it at the time, but I first saw Nicola W in Four Weddings. Along with James Fleet of course. She was one of the folk singers at the first wedding!

Clandestine - but he said he didn't care.

I think he may have been hoping Chris could become a fall guy, but when the link to the murdered girl and the medical conference came up he realised that wouldn't work, presumably he knew Chris had a strong alibi (possibly mh inpatient) for that murder.

As a dr, he shoulda known better than to keep trophies covered in bloody dna though! Although I guess the rebuttal is he arrogantly thought he'd never be caught.

marycontraryquite · 19/08/2018 22:46

Unforgotten is my absolute favourite of these type of programmes. I am feeling bereft now it's over.

I agree with those saying it was a much more straightforward reveal this series but none the worse for it in my opinion.

Alex Jenning's face filling the screen as he revealed his true self was really chilling. I saw him in London as Willy Wonka in Charlie and the Chocolate factory - his range is fairly impressive!

And I saw Kevin McNally (James) in a play years ago where he spent much of the time naked - his range is also impressive. Grin

Graphista · 19/08/2018 22:47

I missed that - might have been when my signal was glitching.

They caught the "right wing nutter" who stabbed Pete, still had the knife on him - also did the blogger presumably for something like inciting violence?

ClandestineAdulation · 19/08/2018 22:48

I guess so, Graphista, I suppose that I hoped he’d have some kind of remorse for doing that to a supposedly good friend. The way that Chris interacted with James at Pete’s funeral showed what good friends they were.

You’re probably right though, in Tim making Chris the fall guy - easy target, I suppose!

I did expect a major twist (a serial killer should be a big twist but it’s not by Unforgotten standards) but I really enjoyed this series nonetheless.

NancyJoan · 19/08/2018 22:50

I’d forgotten about the blogger.

Graphista · 19/08/2018 22:50

Range is a euphemism now? ConfusedGrin

It was the little smile amid the confession - like "yea you caught me but it took you 30+ years and only because I buried one that would be easily found"

southeastdweller · 19/08/2018 22:51

The blogger story felt like filler. Don't feel it served any purpose to the series.

Duckherding · 19/08/2018 22:53

Love unforgotten, I also would have liked there to be some kind of total to tie it up.

When is season 4 ?!

marycontraryquite · 19/08/2018 22:56

Graphista, I blame the wine. Wink

Graphista · 19/08/2018 22:56

My Shock moment came when he said "I am"

I really didn't expect him to confess. It was beautifully understated how it was written and played too.

'Get me a cuppa and I'll tell you all about how I've been a serial killer for 30 odd years' Confused

Yet of course that's quite realistic. I'm fascinated by forensic science and sometimes watch those programmes about real life serial offenders being caught out due to forensic evidence - often that they thought they'd destroyed or was too old to be of use - and it's chillingly matter of fact how they finally confess. Even the exchanges between police officers and suspects can be quite dull, when you consider the impact of what they're discussing.

Apparently Ted Bundy had quite a "pally" rapport with the officers he interacted with and (mistakenly) thought they were friends!

Smidge001 · 19/08/2018 22:58

I really feel there would have been more fall out from cassie leaving the file in the cafe that led to pete's stabbing.

As an accountant leaving a client's file is basically a stackable offence, surely the police would have to be seen to take major action. And even if not, you'd think the media would have hounded her for what happened.

5000FingersofDrT · 19/08/2018 22:58

Anyone now missing Nicola Walker on a Sunday can hear her on Radio 4 playing Oslo cop Annika Strandhed.....I heard a trail earlier reminding me that it started today at 19:45. Available on catch-up, luckily, because the trail still didn't make me remember to listen.

(Unfortunately it's got one of those cringey titles R4 seems so keen on, 'Annika Stranded', because....er, her name is Strandhed and she often goes out on the water on boats and...er...geddit?)

HannahnotAgnes · 19/08/2018 23:05

I really enjoyed it. Think the twist was more the impact it had on Cassie & her needing time off & struggling to deal with things.

Really hoping for season 4 (with NW still in it!).

BitOfFun · 19/08/2018 23:11

I thought that was superb. I was as tearful as Cassie by the end!

mmmgoats · 19/08/2018 23:12

I think re kindness to chris that it was his sadistic control streak.
I think tim was responsible for the charges on his card and ruining chris’s life and he got perverse satisfaction from seeing how far he had fallen and then coming in and being the saviour while knowing he was the one who caused it

He seemed to be really enjoying cassie’s upset during the interview

Graphista · 19/08/2018 23:13

Smidge - it was acknowledged that there'd be an investigation by ipcc, that this could lead to disciplinary action. Irl if she leaves it could look like she jumped before being pushed.
