Hi all

Here is the next thread for those who are watching The Handmaid's Tale Season 2 on Channel 4. Please don't put any spoilers on this - the other thread (for those in other countries who are watching ahead of the UK) is:

Bit of Rihanna at the end there. Consideration Grin

If you feel it's too far fetched you could always stop watching it? It a TV series, it was never going to be true to life or exactly like the book.

I'm bloody loving it. Plenty of drama, always on the edge of my seat and the storylines are so deep and hard hitting. Also love reading the thread to see other people's insights on the storylines (and all the helpful watchers who point out small details)

Crinkle77 · 15/07/2018 22:18

awoman i agree. Series 1 was outstanding. This series doesn't seem too have the same tension and the writing is not as good. The only episode this series which has got me really excited was episode 7.

AWomanIsAnAdultHumanFemale · 15/07/2018 22:19

If you feel it's too far fetched you could always stop watching it?

We’re allowed to be critical of it. This isn’t gilead where we silence women Wink

Crinkle77 · 15/07/2018 22:22

I am not going to stop watching. I am so emotionally invested now I need to know what happens next.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 15/07/2018 22:29

Wow, brilliant episode.
Nick's got it coming. I was on the edge of my seat expecting things to go wrong for him in the last few minutes.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 15/07/2018 22:30

Unless all the things pointing to him are an elaborate bluff by the writers, of course

mizu · 15/07/2018 22:32

What an episode. I loved it. So it's a bit far fetched, it's brilliant.

morningtoncrescent62 · 15/07/2018 22:33

I agree it's getting far-fetched - but I'm still gripped by it.

Surely Nick's days are numbered now. It must be very obvious to Fred and Serena how those letters got out. I wonder if they'd stayed their full planned time in Canada if Serena would have had second thoughts about defecting.

OytheBumbler · 15/07/2018 22:35

In a way it would be better for June to escape without the baby and then try to get the children back once she's safe.

Gilhead must be on it's last legs now Canada has refused to entertain them.

TheThirdOfHerName · 15/07/2018 22:35

I found this episode really hopeful in many ways. Which possibly means that next week is going to be brutal.

1000piecepuzzle · 15/07/2018 22:44

I thought that Waterford seeing and recognising Moira was really important - not just for the emotional kick to him, but because it allows the possibility for him to think that she took the letters out, rather than suspecting someone in his entourage (were there more than just him, Serena and Nick?)

Poor Nick, he always tells June he loves her and she has never said it back I think. You could see how difficult he found it talking about her husband to her.

Hygge · 15/07/2018 22:45

I really want to know more about Aunt Lydia now.

We've learned she has a sister. We learned she was a godmother to her nephew. We learned he died at four days old. And she said "It wasn't my fault" which is an odd thing to say as it implies someone would think it was.

I want to know what happened? I want to know if what happened is the reason why she's now an Aunt or why she believes so strongly in even the worst brutalities of Gilead.

viques · 15/07/2018 22:50

Thank god Nick got the letters out. I was convinced that brainwashed creepy Eden was going to read them and pass them on to her new best jam eating friend.

I wish June had asked Martha what her real name .

A bit ironic this episode airs the week of Trumps visit to the UK

AWomanIsAnAdultHumanFemale · 15/07/2018 23:02

I wonder if aunt Lydia feels she failed in her duty as godmother to her nephew and so is trying to atone for that by protecting all the babies in gilead.

viques · 15/07/2018 23:03

Oh. dear, I am watching on catch up and am now wondering if Eden is aware of the result the letters have had............

ladybird69 · 15/07/2018 23:06

Sorry haven’t read tonight’s posts. But tonight seemed to remind me of Trumps visit to UK, the demonstrations and how his wife really doesn’t seem to want to be here!

TheHandmaidsTail · 15/07/2018 23:06

June had said men that hurt women hurt babies.

AL hurts women. I took her to say 'it wasn't my fault' as acceptance of her violence but assuring June she wouldn't hurt a baby.

EsmesBees · 15/07/2018 23:07

We know that 'Martha's' real name is Rita though don't we?

Still gripped here. I found the singing of the national anthem a bit corny though

AWomanIsAnAdultHumanFemale · 15/07/2018 23:12

I suppose the national anthem was the one thing that unites them that they could do in that moment for a bit of spirit lifting.

viques · 15/07/2018 23:18

EsmesBees , when did we find out Rita's name? Was it in series 1 - I think I need a synopsis of each episode to refer to each time, it's getting very complicated now!

Celticlassie · 15/07/2018 23:32

Surely Eden will never find out about the letters? I imagine news from the outside world is pretty restricted. I missed Isaac kiss her though - when did that happen?

Flaskfan · 15/07/2018 23:38

I wonder if AL was a nurse who was struck off. I know she says s :) e thought she might have been a teacher, but her manner seems old fashioned matron.

I found this episode most like season 1 in.terms of emotional impact.

iheartmichellemallon · 15/07/2018 23:39

Eden won't know about the letters or their impact as Waterford wouldn't let that news out within Gilead - he'll also need to save face somehow with the other Commanders as he's seriously fucked up the diplomatic mission.

I think next week will be horrendous given there seemed to be hope this week at the end - feel very nervous about what will happen when the baby comes.

mangowango · 15/07/2018 23:45

Where did the letters come from? I don't remember?

MrStarkIDontFeelSoGood · 15/07/2018 23:48

It wasn't the Star Spangled Banner it was America The Brave it's a different song not the anthem

I need to catch up all comments but what a brilliant episode but with slightly implausible elements

Liked June trying to secure protective figures for her baby

Couldn't believe the guard whacking Janine

The Canada stuff was great I was particularly agog at Serena being given a pictorial synopsis of her day. Those are mostly used for people with learning disabilities. How humiliating

That her whole life and personality had been reduced to "She's a gardener, who smokes and does a bit of knitting"

She had nothing she can't even converse with equals anymore

Also her shock at ordinary clothing and PDA

The Nick/Luke/Letters thing was contrived but I found the song moving

Fred recognised Moira I wonder if he'll tell June he wouldn't realise Nick could tell her
