Handmaids Tale, Season 2: SPOILERS / VIEWING AHEAD OF UK SREENING

I'm starting a thread for those of us watching Season 2 and who want to discuss ahead of its screening in the UK.

So far I've watched the first 3 episodes.

God the 1st episode was grim.

It’s all been pretty grim - but amazing - so powerful.

That opening ten minutes with no dialogue - terrifying.

So well acted. Everyone in it is amazing (with the possible exception of Nick? He’s a bit blah really).

Alexis Bledel in the second episode in the Colonies was amazing. And Elizabeth Moss is so expressive - the way she conveys emotions just with a facial expression.

opalescent · 03/05/2018 12:19

Only watched the first episode so far, and I'm straight away back where I was at the end of season 1- seriously disturbed by it!!

Agree that all the actors are just amazing. Elisabeth Moss has been flawless as offred.
I'm interested to find out that we see more about the colonies in the next couple of episodes?

Aridane · 03/05/2018 12:19

In the last episode, when June was in the abandoned office block (?) for some time, what were the newspaper articles she was cutting out and pinning on the wall? I was watching on my iPad and couldn't see them.

opalescent - that 1st episode was ISIS like in its brutality with the (mock) executions

HamAndTomato · 03/05/2018 12:25

The newspaper articles were all about various things that led up to the formation of Gilead - all the long little things that happened and in retrospect June can see how it came about - she says something like “The clues were all there for us to see”.

Aridane · 03/05/2018 12:27

Thanks.

Another question.

The family / community at the end - where the women were all wearing the same type of clothing - were they a particular category of women? So in Season 1 we had the handmaidens in the red dresses and wings, the wives of the commanders (?) in blue - so what are these women? Are they 'regular' women not otherwise handmaidens or commanders' wives? (Unfortunately I have a short recall between different seasons of the same programme)

OP posts:
HamAndTomato · 03/05/2018 12:33

They’re Econowives. They are mentioned in the book - wives of men with no great social status (unlike the Commanders). But women who toe the line and hadn’t “sinned” according to Gilead’s rules so didn’t become Handmaids. Basically families with a lower social status - the men would have done menial jobs and the women would be housewives.

I wonder if we will ever find out why the family who took her in didn’t come back? Had they been caught?

AcrossthePond55 · 03/05/2018 22:11

I've really enjoyed the season so far. The glimpse into the Colony and the bits of 'backstory' on June and 'Ofglen' (can't remember her 'real' name).
!!!!!!!!!SPOILER FOLLOWING!!!!!
BIG FAT EP 3 SPOILER. SKIP THE REST IF YOU HAVEN'T WATCHED!!!

I had myself convinced that June was going to make out and the season was going to be about a 'rescue mission'. Needless to say, I was thrown for a loop!

Catfacecats · 03/05/2018 22:17

I couldn’t believe the end of episode 3!!!!!!!!!

HamAndTomato · 03/05/2018 22:35

Part of me was thinking “She can’t escape, it’s only episode 3!” I didn’t think about a rescue mission.

It’s been confirmed there will be a series 3.

TheBadgersMadeMeDoIt · 03/05/2018 23:01

I'm dying to know why the family didn't come back, too. I don't think they got caught, or the guardians would have come straight to their home looking for Offred. The wife was against taking her in, though. Maybe she refused to go home until Offred was gone. Or maybe they thought it would be better to run than to get caught harbouring a fugitive handmaid?

AcrossthePond55 · 03/05/2018 23:10

I'm assuming they were caught. Remember the man got a text that said 'safe house no longer safe' so he reluctantly took June home with him. I'm assuming it was a chain reaction of confessions forced from safe house people leading to the couple who took June in leading to the pilot.

Praisebe · 03/05/2018 23:13

Just finished the 3rd episode of season 2 on kodi. Can't believe June was sooo close to escaping and the bastards caught her again ! Do you think Aunt Lydia will get a hold of her and chain her up like the other disobedient handmaid ? Beginning to think she'll never see Luke or Hannah again Sad

Aria2015 · 03/05/2018 23:14

I've just watched the first two. Agree - the first one was brutal! I'm already on the edge of my seat anticipating what will happen next! Sign of a good season I hope!!

Praisebe · 03/05/2018 23:15

Was also intresting to see June's mother get a mention but it was so heartbreaking when June saw the propaganda reel and saw her mother had been captured but what was she captured for ? I noticed they mentioned something about abortion records being burned ?

macnab · 03/05/2018 23:15

I am a bloody nervous wreck after episode 3 and can't sleep now! This is one thing I definitely couldn't binge-watch, it's just too intense. The reminiscing about her daughter is just heartbreaking. There's been little reference to her current pregnancy (and I wonder how the hell your pregnancy could survive under so much stress)

I couldn't believe the ending Shock and I'm dreading the next episode and what Aunt Lydia's punishment will be Sad

A third season?? This season bloody well better have some semblance of a happy ending or I'll crack up!

Praisebe · 03/05/2018 23:20

If she does go back to Aunt Lydia she'll get re tagged and punished somehow maybe a limb burned or cut off. They seem to like torture as long as it doesn't harm the unborn. I agree about June's pregnancy i reckon there's a chance she'll miscarry from all the abuse and then probably be abused even more for loosing "Serena's baby"

Praisebe · 03/05/2018 23:22

Didn't June work for the Boston news company ? I thought when she was in that building it looked familiar to the first season when they all lost their jobs and had to run out ? I know she said she was a Proof reader

HamAndTomato · 03/05/2018 23:30

Praisebe I think June’s mother was a doctor who worked at an abortion clinic.

June worked as a editor for a small publishing company.

I think she’ll be punished when she is taken back but surely they won’t do anything that will risk her miscarrying the baby. While she is still pregnant I don’t think they’ll harm her too much (physically). Once the baby’s born she’ll probably be sent off to the Colonies? So she really has to try to escape again before the baby’s born.

I wonder if her mother is still alive in the Colonies somewhere? I think we will see her again.

eloisesparkle · 03/05/2018 23:42

In episode 1 of Series 2 why did she cut herself when cutting her hair?

HamAndTomato · 03/05/2018 23:44

And I just have to say - I LOVED the line “Blessed be the Fruit Loops”. Brilliant!

HamAndTomato · 03/05/2018 23:45

She cut her tag out - it was implanted in her ear in series 1.

When is it starting on TV.

Praisebe · 04/05/2018 00:43

Don't think it's on UK tv till October you can just download kodi and watch it on there though its simple

OohMavis · 04/05/2018 07:22

I did think cutting part of her ear off was a bit much. It was a cattle ID ring wasn't it? Just cut that off!

Anyway I don't think they'll punish her. I think maybe she'll be placed back with the Waterfords and it'll completely throw her off.
