Hi all

Here is the next thread for those who are watching The Handmaid's Tale Season 2 on Channel 4. Please don't put any spoilers on this - the other thread (for those in other countries who are watching ahead of the UK) is:

The letters were written by girls in Jezebel's

MrStarkIDontFeelSoGood · 15/07/2018 23:56

I have to know WHAT wasn't Aunt Lydia's fault, what's she wearing her hair shirt and trying to atone for

EmpressWeaponisedClitoris · 15/07/2018 23:57

Fred recognised Moira I wonder if he'll tell June

I don't think so, he wouldn't want to give her ideas about escaping again.

That moment when Luke confronted Fred & Serena saw the photo looked like it hit her hard. Suddenly having to face the reality of June being a person with a life & family, not just a vessel for Gilead's convenience. I'm not sure whether that would make her treat June more or less harshly though.

I was really intrigued by "It wasn't my fault" too. And she never got to hear her nephew call her "Aunt Lydia".

CruCru · 16/07/2018 00:12

I’m wondering whether Fred will suspect Serena of passing the letters on. She’s got a bit too cosy with June for his liking and has just been hanging out in a bar with a man from the US government.

@CruCru I thought that too. I really liked tonight's episode but I suspect next week's will be gruelling as Fred tries to get his shit together

KissMeLikeYouMissMe · 16/07/2018 00:28

OMG that episode was SO GOOD!!!!

I agree there were quite a few things which seemed really far fetched but I still loved it. I was willing luke to say something to waterford and then desperate for nick to find luke.
The bit in the bedroom was a bit silly.....how would they explain it of they got caught? That said I was so anxious for them not to get caught so I guess it adds tension.

I think Serena is hugely regretting her life j giliad. I think if June hadn't been pregnant there's a good chance she would have gone on that jet with the reporter!

LittleWingSoul · 16/07/2018 01:10

Another gripping episode...

This was a snippet of the back story we were hoping to get on Aunt Lydia

I also felt like June trying to set up godparents was a scheme of some sort... Not sure what

And yes, as pp have said the timing with the trump protests hits hard doesn't it? And protesters dressing like handmaids.

I think the bar Nick finding luke is being called 'the comrade' perhaps indicated that they are all equals on this space, it was filmed inn a red (communist/... Or maybe handmaid?!) shade of red too.

The letters going viral... Boom! I also loved when one of the dignitaries mentioned his boyfriend. I just wanted to go Ha Ha Ha! In Waterfords face. Parallels real life in the homophobia surrounding Russia and the world cup.

Such a good episode tonight

bathildab · 16/07/2018 01:16

In the book Offred was able to sneak into Nick's room and they slept together. So not completely a stretch for it to happen vice versa is it?
I found the Luke confronting Waterford a little contrived but good drama. The thing that didn't ring true was Waterford recognising Moira through the window. That sort of arsehole never would.

WitchSharkadder · 16/07/2018 01:20

We’ve just always known Rita’s name, there was no ‘reveal’ Martha is a job title but they all just have their own name.

Yy, I think Fred will make the assumption that Moira released the letters. He certainly won’t want to delve into it too much back in Gilead for fear of it being a huge embarrassment to him & his failure.

CurbsideProphet · 16/07/2018 07:09

I thought Fred recognised Moira from Jezebels because he knew that she and June are friends and he'll know what she did to get out of Jezebels. I might be miss-remembering?

EmpressWeaponisedClitoris · 16/07/2018 07:17

The plot with the neonatologist made me wonder about Rita's history.

And it was actually the quiet ex-handmaid who suggested the letters going kaboom wasn't it? Good for her. I'd wondered if something would happen between her & Luke but after last night it feels less likely.

RandomMess · 16/07/2018 07:19

Can you remind me how Moira escaped?

CurbsideProphet · 16/07/2018 07:27

Moira stashed a weapon (pretty sure it was a knife) and took the clothes and car key from a man at Jezebels. I think she knocked him out. Something like that.

extinctspecies · 16/07/2018 07:41

I thought that as Nick was able to smuggle the letters out of Gilead, surely he would have taken a letter or some sort of token from Luke back to June as well.

That seemed odd, that they didn't make more of that opportunity.

And the handmaids' letters were hidden for a long time so she'd have been able to hide something small too.

TheGoldenWolfFleece · 16/07/2018 07:58

Intetesting glance into Lydia's back story.

EmpressWeaponisedClitoris · 16/07/2018 08:06

Lack of time? Maybe Nick could only get away once. Or maybe he & Luke would have managed something else if they hadn't left Canada so soon.

NynaeveSedai · 16/07/2018 08:08

Watching last night's episode and place marking

Roussette · 16/07/2018 08:14

I think it made sense not to take anything back to June from Luke. No way would she read then destroy it. If it were found it puts Nick 100% in the frame for all the letters

ciderhouserules · 16/07/2018 09:58

i don't think Serena could even think about staying in canada - at the moment she is still in 'that would be betrayal' mode; of husband, country, faith etc. I think also she would have been def followed and watched, surreptitiously. Nick too. I'm surprised he could get out to find Luke, but then he is an Eye...

He's in trouble now tho, I think Eden will eventually tell someone (Isaac) about the letters, and Waterford will know it was Nick. He suspects already.

It's all so desperate and depressing - I hope ther is a bit more 'hope' at the end of this series. There is a series 3 I think?

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 16/07/2018 10:25

I think Serena was tempted, though.

EmpressWeaponisedClitoris · 16/07/2018 10:29

I think Serena would have been most tempted after seeing Luke with that photo & having to face what they'd done to June. But then it was too late.

I'm wonder if she'll offer to help June escape. The condition being that the baby stays.

eyycarumba · 16/07/2018 10:47

Waterford recognising Moira, didn't she say he had slept with her? She definitely suggested it in the book.

Has anybody else got a slight crush on good-guy Nick? I really hope nothing bad happens to him or he helps June/their baby escape. Also, he's not just a driver - he's an eye - I would have thought that gave him extra permissions such as walking around Canada without a guard/unwatched.

Loved Aunt Lydia's 'it wasn't my fault', it's so intriguing. I think she was possibly blamed for the death of her nephew or in someway inadvertently caused it? I agree with another PP though, she could have been a nurse in her previous life.

Hygge · 16/07/2018 10:54

I'm finding it hard to put into words what I mean, but whenever Serena is faced with a choice, she makes the choice to be evil (for want of a better word).

I don't think she's going to help June or turn her back on Gilead any time soon.

EmpressWeaponisedClitoris · 16/07/2018 10:54

Waterford recognising Moira, didn't she say he had slept with her? She definitely suggested it in the book.

And it was explicit in the TV version, but he could just have seen her as one more female body.

MrStarkIDontFeelSoGood · 16/07/2018 11:18

Totally agree with the idea that Fred is exactly the kind of arsehole not to recall the faces of prostitutes he's shagged

However

He delivered her to June as a gift at one time when they were in Jezebel's so he definitely knows their connection

Didn't he?
