I enjoyed the first series (which is currently on iplayer) - some terrific performances, esp from Lesley Manville, Dorothy Atkinson and Lisa McGrillis. For any other fans, Series 2 starts 20 FebSmile

Gem of a series, reminds me of the Peter Kay Carpool a lot. Am totally in love with Peter Mullan and ship those guys so much!

YoohooDorothy · 21/03/2018 22:18

Avoided this thread until I could catch up. I am so pleased i found this show! Reg on the phone talking about Maureen haunting him, you could just tell he was almost hoping it'd be true so they'd never really be parted.

I like that Jason is sensitive about his mum despite the dopey personality. He doesn't want her to be lonely.

Also thought it was interesting how Pauline didn't snap back at Derek when he said he didn't like her texting Geoff. Maybe Geoff never cared about her in that way.

Kernowgal · 22/03/2018 20:40

Just caught up on Tuesday's episode. That hug! I too am massively overinvested in this programme - I don't want it to end!

I think they'll develop Pauline's character in series 3. She's fabulously awful.

The80sweregreat · 22/03/2018 20:44

It was stew - not cereal.
As we were!

The80sweregreat · 22/03/2018 20:44

Sorry! 😃

SimonBridges · 22/03/2018 20:52

I don’t understand why Derek and Pauline were coming over for dinner but they didn’t all sit down together to eat.
We saw a much more interesting side of the son last night too.

EnidButton · 22/03/2018 21:36

Pauline's my favourite. There's all kinds of hurt and insecurity hiding beneath the snobbery. They're all really layered characters. I love that.

Actually Michael's my absolute favourite. Obviously. ❤️

Cary2012 · 22/03/2018 22:27

Perfect episode.
The ending got me. Her at the fridge, him serving his dinner, then her side ways glance...subtle, but just right. She's thinking, 'yep, you look just right at home in my kitchen.'
My prediction, he arranges to move in, they look forward to being a couple, then Jason says he and Kelly are staying...
A pregnant Kelly!? Can you imagine her eating for two? Grin

Courtesy of someone on Twitter btw. I didn't screenshot it. I missed that they looked at each other just as the other looked away.

The80sweregreat · 23/03/2018 09:33

Bless them.
Kelly would just eat and eat even more if she does become pregnant, poor child having her mum as a grand parent though.

Not sure how series three will pan out, i cant see Derek being too happy about Cathy and Michael somehow, he seems the jealous sort.Pauline will just sniff about him being Scottish or something and the inlaws might be a bit annoyed too maybe? i can't see it being easy for them.

purplelass · 23/03/2018 09:39

That hug though! Smile

dorothyparka · 23/03/2018 13:09

Yes! And when they were standing in front of the house and a car went past and they both turned towards it and C was watching M watching the car ... so subtle and yet so powerful.

The80sweregreat · 23/03/2018 13:35

I laughed when Cathy said to Kelly ( in response to her shabby chic comment) ' there's lots in the shed' ..

WhatCanIDoNowPlease · 23/03/2018 13:46

I loved the way in the kitchen scene that he was happy and relaxed enough to help himself to what he needed. And she let him, and they just looked like a couple who had been married for years. So comfortable.

FellOutOfBed2wice · 23/03/2018 21:22

I think that this is one of the finest written and acted things that’s been on television for years. And how anyone can say that Michael is creepy I don’t know.... he’s lovely! He’s loved Cathy for 40 odd years and you can tell that with every word and every action. It’s beautiful.

The grandparents really remind me of my late Nan, who was fucking dreadful to know but would have been very funny in a sitcom Grin

And Dereks glasses this week had me in stitches.

dorothyparka · 23/03/2018 21:56

The impossible-to-please Reg: 'Shallots? Suddenly she's too good for an onion!'Grin
Kelly following Derek on TwitterGrin
Pauline's face: 'It's a dead woman's toaster!'Grin
Just brilliant

thenightsky · 23/03/2018 22:11

DH is desperate to see this after I've gone on and on about how wonderful if its. I cannot find series one at all on iplayer now. Does anyone know if its available anywhere else?

southeastdweller · 23/03/2018 22:21

Yes, it's on Amazon and iTunes.

leccybill · 23/03/2018 22:26

On Amazon? You mean the DVD to buy? I'm not spending actual money.

southeastdweller · 23/03/2018 22:27

DVD and download. Yes you have to pay for it.

Cleebope2 · 24/03/2018 00:27

I love the way it explores the differenit sides of every day family love plus of course all sorts of relationships. Loved Pauline’s step daughter hating all humanity whilst obviously being a lovely girl and knitting. And the small connection with Pauline helping her with the knitting. I find Lesley and Peter’s performances totally mesmeric. And convincing. Especially as my mum is currently visiting a lot of garden centres with her dead friend’s husband. That longing for companionship in older age is so real. But also scary...no one wants to be judged or talked about.
