I enjoyed the first series (which is currently on iplayer) - some terrific performances, esp from Lesley Manville, Dorothy Atkinson and Lisa McGrillis. For any other fans, Series 2 starts 20 FebSmile

it was a nice article - it is a bit of a' marmite' show though i think - some people will not get it at all! I am glad i've found this thread as we all agree that its terrific.

CanIBuffalo · 26/03/2018 13:36

It's reminded me a bit of Victoria Wood's writing at times - the sad or bitter sweet parts of Dinner Ladies or the one where Julie Walters played her sister and was vile.

The80sweregreat · 26/03/2018 13:39

Pat and Margaret was very good, it was a one off Victoria Wood drama.

The ones VW did as little documentaries was also very bitter / sweet too. There was one with a girl about to swim the channel and it was all the things she didnt say which spoke volumes about her life. its nice when writers can do this without ' flagging' everything up for the viewer.
Alan Bennett is another one who can do this. very clever and i am in awe of such good writers and creativity.

How interesting that the writer is a relatively young man, and he wrote Him and Her, which I loved. I'm not 'up' on this sort of thing, I just know what I enjoy, without a clue as to writers and directors.

His is a name I will definitely be looking out for in the future though.

EnidButton · 26/03/2018 15:54

I didn't know he'd written Him and Her. I can see the similarities now. Although I was never sure about H&H. I think I found the main female character a bit smug but it was well written. The sister was my favourite character in that and I can see bits of her in Pauline.

Last episode tomorrow!

TheFirstMrsOsmond · 26/03/2018 17:54

Very interesting in the article when he says the title "Mum" will become more ironic with each series and it being about how Cathy is trying to free herself from that identity. I have always felt that although she is loving to Jason & Kelly she feels it really is time for them to move out! Though that could be because I am at that stage of life myself and enjoying being a free agent with kids all gone - the assumption that women are lonely with "empty nest syndrome" is quite common but not always the case.

leccybill · 26/03/2018 19:51

Loved that article.

southeastdweller · 27/03/2018 17:05

I expect they’ll tentatively get together tonight in the last episode.

snozzlemaid · 27/03/2018 17:39

I can't wait for this episode but I don't want it to end.

Belindabelle · 27/03/2018 17:50

I may watch this episode 'live' tonight. I cannot wait.

The80sweregreat · 27/03/2018 18:02

I wonder if the writer might throw us a 'curved ball ' tonight and it wont go to plan? i hope not, but if there is going to be a third series then it might. i will tape and watch tomorrow morning after work with a tea and fingers crossed, i'm wrong.

KellyMarieTunstall2 · 27/03/2018 18:09

I love this show, so funny and touching. I'm so glad there will be a third season.

Slartybartfast · 27/03/2018 19:43

might have to watch on catch up, to ensure complete attention.

WhatCanIDoNowPlease · 27/03/2018 20:36

Kelly's mum is just so bloody awful I really want her to have a great backstory to explain why.

All the details in this are fabulous. Did you notice when Kelly woke Cathy up at 5am the cup of tea she was holding wasn't even for Cathy!

swimchick1980 · 27/03/2018 22:24

"Why are you trying to steal his wife?" My heart is breaking for Michael Sad.

Slartybartfast · 27/03/2018 22:31

Aw ♥

TossDaily · 27/03/2018 22:32

Belindabelle · 27/03/2018 22:32

Aw that was amazing. I am so happy!

swimchick1980 · 27/03/2018 22:34

Yay, so happy!

Kernowgal · 27/03/2018 22:34

Ah, I needed that! Wonderful. Got the warm and fuzzies now.

longtompot · 27/03/2018 22:36

Lovely ending to this series. I want the next one to start now!

viques · 27/03/2018 22:37

Aw my eyes are leaking, must be pollen.

So many subtle little moments, I love the caring touches Grandad does for sweary Granny, and him bopping along to Cyndi Lauper made me laugh.

Poor Michael, he is hurting so much, but does anyone elsewhere think Kelley is pregnant? not eating her dinner, not like her,

Slartybartfast · 27/03/2018 22:38

Just perfect, although I hoped Derek would stand up for himself a bit but that would be a character change. Although I think Pauline was impressed by his thuggery

snozzlemaid · 27/03/2018 22:38

I thought Maureen was dead for a bit.
Great bit with grandad dancing to Girls just wanna have fun.
Lots of more heart wrenching dialogue and looks as always.
Just brilliant.
