I enjoyed the first series (which is currently on iplayer) - some terrific performances, esp from Lesley Manville, Dorothy Atkinson and Lisa McGrillis. For any other fans, Series 2 starts 20 FebSmile

I found it really annoying.

Don't remember the son being that irritating in the last series?

Everyone just takes the piss.

Annoying that Michael wouldn't tell her about the presents either.

The80sweregreat · 22/02/2018 10:54

I think michael doesn’t want to push himself forwards as the dad died and they were friends. ( I called him peter !) he isn’t sure how to play it. Son and gf need to move out - most people would put the bags at the door by now!

SM2132 · 22/02/2018 11:52

Haven't heard of this but glad I saw this thread! Need something new to watch.

WhatCanIDoNowPlease · 22/02/2018 11:56

Kate Middleton's spelling aged 4 was a fucking car crash!

The80sweregreat · 22/02/2018 11:59

Thst sil is a nightmare! I do know people like her though.

Tigresswoods · 22/02/2018 12:04

SIL is like someone I know. It's very therapeutic to watch her on mum! I loved that she didn't know what a carvery was & that she'd have to queue!!!!!

MuffinMad · 22/02/2018 12:09

I can't remember what episode it was of the first series, but it was the part were they are all outside in front of the garage and Kelly is talking to her mum and telling her what an idiot she (Kelly) was. Her mum replied saying that Kelly (as a baby) was the most beautiful thing she had ever seen.
This was after Cathy had had words with Kelly's mum saying that she's always ridiculing Kelly.
That scene brought a tear to my eye.

The acting is brilliant.

Love it.

viques · 22/02/2018 12:10

Lesley Manville is one of the nations unsung treasures. Saw her in Phantom Thread a few weeks ago and hard to realise it is the same person.

southeastdweller · 22/02/2018 12:13

She is terrific, always different in everything. Anyone see her playing a very sad and lonely character in a Mike Leigh film called Another Year? She was amazing in that.

Tigresswoods · 22/02/2018 12:19

Muffin mad I know that scene, it really choked me up. I love Kelly, she wouldn't hurt anyone.

AnyFucker · 22/02/2018 12:20

.

diddl · 22/02/2018 12:45

"he isn’t sure how to play it."

True-there's a middle ground between a bottle of wine & a laundry basket full though!

The80sweregreat · 22/02/2018 12:57

Hmm. I think he didn’t want the son to think they were all for her. He is scared to step on toes. He is also aware that the son is an idiot!

Slartybartfast · 22/02/2018 13:03

Agree she was amazing in Another Year, so accurate

longtompot · 22/02/2018 13:13

I love this series and the characters are so well written. So infuriating, but great fun to watch. I do find the pace a little slow, but its all part of it I guess.

LaLaLolly · 22/02/2018 15:05

OP thank you for posting this - I didn't know this series and having watched three episodes so far, absolutely love it!

MuffinMad that scene with Kelly's mum really brought tears to my eyes too.

RainbowdropsandUnicorns · 28/02/2018 14:26

I love the grandparents. I want Derek yo get with someone else who appreciates him.

southeastdweller · 28/02/2018 14:33

Jason is pissing me off! So what if Michael’s round on Easter Day? I wish Cathy was more assertive.

youngestisapsycho · 28/02/2018 16:02

Jason wasn’t so dopey in series one! Maybe It’s being around Kelly?😂

fusushumi · 28/02/2018 16:33

I love "Mum" - I am a huge fan of Lesley Manville and agree she was wonderful in "Phantom Thread" and "Another Year". She frequently collaborates with Mike Leigh - she was quite extraordinary in a stage play of his at the National Theatre called "Grief" a few years ago.

Slartybartfast · 28/02/2018 17:14

Of course Jason would no be too keen on his mum dating anyone, that's why

southeastdweller · 28/02/2018 17:19

They’re not dating, though.

The80sweregreat · 28/02/2018 17:53

cathy is too nice. She should tell son and g/ f to just go - she should tell sil to f off and tell Micheal he is lovely and she does want his help with things. Easy for me to say i know!
Why they always round there?

It is good though,,better than that rubbish with john cleese thats on sunday night.

goingtotown · 28/02/2018 19:37

Anyone remember Lesley Manville in MIke Leigh’s Secrets & Lies?

The80sweregreat · 28/02/2018 20:10

Lesley manville is very good - shes another one that can convay things without saying much. Mike leigh films are fab - he hasnt made one in a while. Secrets and lies is one of my favouites
