I enjoyed the first series (which is currently on iplayer) - some terrific performances, esp from Lesley Manville, Dorothy Atkinson and Lisa McGrillis. For any other fans, Series 2 starts 20 FebSmile

Not many people could pull off that scene with the burger.
Best few seconds of TV I've seen in years.
Peter Mullen is a good actor too.

I found last night's episode strangely moving. So much of it was about "dead Dave" - he really was the spectre at the feast.
Everyone is emotionally vulnerable in their different ways. Pauline normally makes me cringe but then she goes and is kind to the awkward teenager. But yes, please Michael and Cathy - their relationship needs to move on.

I guess i'm the only one who loved series 1 and have found series 2 steadily more disappointing. Which is embarrassing, as i've told so many people it was great. I just think it's run out of steam.

matey, its something that happens a lot in books and dramas, the one that isnt around or ever seen is the most interesting character.

I just have a vision of Dave as a bit loud, passing round the beers, very much in charge of things and had everyone hanging on his every word.

Such excellent acting, had me laughing out loud at the PIL's swearing rants and then I was in tears over them eating their burgers thinking of their dead son and Pauline helping Derek's daughter with the knitting, beautifully done.

I loved this week's episode.

Pauline is a fantastic character. The knitting scene was so very touching.

Love Michael. Can see why he's creepy to some but he really doesn't want to screw up his friendship by rushing things or making a wrong move.

I've met men like Michael.

It's so gentle, yet very funny and really makes me smile. Smile

I hope someone to do with the show finds this thread.

the old couple do make me laugh. Very cutting but truthful. Not very PC.

and Pauline was in Call the Midwife,
the actors must love their roles in this, particularly Pauline

There's a third series, but tonight's episode really got to me. I felt my heart flutter and then drop like a stone. Just brilliant acting between Cathy and Michael.

I did laugh when Pauline was talking about going to the theatre.
But I find it painful to watch Kathy being basically catatonic and the other characters being grotesque.

When Cathy let Micheal down his face just fell apart. Stunning acting from both of them.

Yes, they were brilliant. When Michael said his Mum died broke my heart. Excellent acting.

I shed a tear tonight when Cathy let down Michael. The writing is so well-observed and Peter Mullan and Lesley Manville are sublime.

Very moving the scenes between Cathy and Michael. Grandad and grandma were very funny and sweet. And poor Kelly Sad

Just watched this week's. Yes my heart dropped too, just awful after such a long "what if?" I love this series so much, so many little moments that make every character both horrible and lovely. Last week's scene with Pauline helping the goth child with her knitting ❤️ and grandad going on about Cheryl Cole all the while making grandma comfortable. They all love each other so much (well, apart from Kelly's awful mum).

Last night's was just devastating - 'What if I just miss Dave?' I think she just didn't want it to be a reaction to his mum dying: that she wanted it to happen in its own right, if you see what I mean. It's not the last in this series, is it?

southeastdweller · 14/03/2018 10:33

No, two more to go.

so sad- i am sitting here crying - that was the most Michael has ever said and kathy on the drive as they went off was heartbreaking.

Kelly's mum is an absolute cow who makes Pauline look sort of human.
she played a similar character in Eastenders.
such good acting all round.
lets hope Kathy comes to her senses soon.

Peter Mullan was absolutely outstanding in that. How one person can move through so many emotions without saying a word is incredible. Our paper said in the preview for last night's episode that it was one for a BAFTA nomination, and I wholeheartedly agree.

As usual, so many beautifully subtle things in last night’s episode.

The way Michael, after decades of silent admiring, was bursting to declare his feelings to the extent that he was doing it with Dave’s parents in the room. And Cathy not ready for it to be real yet, and so seemingly for the first time prioritising her own feelings - but what a time to do that - absolutely brilliant.

I don’t want this series to end Sad

The juxtaposition between Cathy & Michael & then kelly & Jason makes it all the more powerful.

I need next weeks episode now.
