I enjoyed the first series (which is currently on iplayer) - some terrific performances, esp from Lesley Manville, Dorothy Atkinson and Lisa McGrillis. For any other fans, Series 2 starts 20 FebSmile

i remember the lead character in Secrets and Lies, fantastic, but it wasnt Lesley Manville, what part did she play?

She played the social worker who helped the daughter find her biological mother. I’m a big Mike Leigh fan and read that Lesley stepped in at the last minute to replace an actor Mike Leigh fired for being crap. She did a fab job I thought.

I want her and Michael to get together. Trouble is her family are all horrible.

I love Mum. Really love it. The SIL is inspired and the way the brother worships her is very keenly observed and subtlety acted.

I don't understand how someone as nice as Cathy could have such a clueless son but I guess someone has to.

And Michael. Lovely, lovely Michael.

Hoping Cathy and Michael sail off into the sunset together and leave all those horrible relatives behind.
The sil is vile

I have a feeling of doom.
If the old couple are Dave's parents what was Dave like?
So did Dave treat Michael like a numpty, hence Jason and Kelly's attitude to him.
Will J and K actually move out?
Would J accept Michael as a new partner for his mum.

The old couple are her in laws.

And the old couple are back. Brilliant!

A couple of touching moments this week. The old couple reflecting on how their son loved a BBQ & pauline helping the teenager with her knitting. All very subtle but so well acted.

This episode was the best yet. Poignant without being shaltmzy - her frustration at Michaels inability to talk to her - the old man reflecting on his son- just fab!

I loved seeing some softness from Pauline towards Danielle. Smile

The80sweregreat · 07/03/2018 14:24

Danielle isn’t her child is she? They mention Derek’s kids but she isn’t the mum? Is that right?

That’s right 80’s, she’s not her mother.

Derek sounds a bit of a playboy in the past!

Pauline and Derek aren't married, they're partners and she's still very vocal about 'my husband' and the life she used to have.

I liked seeing her softer side with the knitting too, after all her awful put downs, though they're simply to make herself feel better all the time. It was kind of poignant when she was there in her Waitrose uniform all the time denying that Waitrose is an actual supermarket Grin Poignant isn't quite the right word really, but something like that.

I really like Lesley Manville. Shame she missed out on the Oscar, although I haven't seen any of the nominated performances. Both Cathy and Michael are so good at the quiet closeness while everyone else's madness goes on around them. They're two well crafted characters. I'm willing them on to happiness.

Michael needs to just ‘man up’ a bit! Whisk her off her feet!

Who is Derek?
I thought he was Cathy's brother but I think I got that wrong.

Report
The80sweregreat · 07/03/2018 16:41

He is her brother - Pauline is her sil.

Report
EnriqueTheRingBearingLizard · 07/03/2018 16:41

You're right, he is Cathy's brother, the one partnered with acid tongued Pauline.

Sorry - she isn’t as sil as she isn’t married to him !

I was just about to post about this program. I stumbled upon it on iPlayer a week or two ago and am completely hooked.

I found the awkwardness a bit difficult at first but it's so well acted. Michael & Cathy are brilliant. So quiet and understated. So patient!

The guy who plays Michael does a great job. He could so easily come across as a bit creepy with all of the hovering about and quietness but he really nails the character. I love the hesitant but also comfortable relationship between him and Cathy.

All of the others characters, though not necessarily palatable, are brilliantly acted. The bit where the dead husband's parents talk about how their son loved a barbecue; that pause was so poignant. It gave me a lump in my throat.

There are so many great moments, phenomenal writing and delivery of lines. I agree the bit where Kelly's mum realises how awful she is to Kelly after her chat with Cathy.

I really want to like Jason but oh my goodness he's annoying!

I was so pleased to see there's a second series.

Who else is betting that Cathy’s DDH was actually an abusive twat?

Report
southeastdweller · 07/03/2018 22:26

Why on earth would you think that?
