Oh god hated hated the Young Ian casting! I'd always pictured him as dark and kind of edgy (although not grown into his looks yet) and tall! Not that wabbit wee streak they've cast.... Feel the casting has been off this season, liked LJG but Brianna is all wrong, so much of her character is tied up with her physicality and size (she's supposed to be v tall and strong with it)

Fantasticmissfoxy · 24/10/2017 12:49

My ultimate Brianna would be Karen Gillian, she's Scottish, red haired and v tall and a fabulous actress to boot - I reckon beefed up a wee bit she would be perfect

After Claire told Jamie about Brianna, I was a bit surprised that he didn't ask who would be "looking after" their child now that Claire had left her.
Then realised that in the 18th century a 20 year old woman would be expected to be married and have at least 3 children of her own...

LonelyOversharer · 24/10/2017 13:56

That girl in the photo looks a lot like SS as Bree. If she's taller it might have been a good call. I guess it was who was available and auditioned best.

With young Ian (having now watched ep6 4 times Blush ) I think it's his hair line. Like his wig is on too far back?? When we see him with Ian and Jenny I guess we'll see why he was cast, he looks like them both. I too had him tall and gangly, like a rangy teen yet to grow into his body.

So the guy in her room is going into the barrel? Can't for the life of me remember who kills him, is it Claire? I want to dip into Voyager, but that will make me nit pick even more!

quirkychick · 24/10/2017 13:57

Fantastic I so agree! I have been rewatching the Dr Whos with dd1 atm and keep thinking how great she would be. Especially the pirate Dr Who where Amy is in full pirate gear with tricorn hat. Perfect Brianna.

Lessstressedhemum · 24/10/2017 14:18

divergent, we get it from Jamie's point of view later, after it all blows up. It's desperately sad for both of them actually.
When Jamie comes back from Helwater, he is very mentally unwell. He has lost his friends, his wife and his three children. He's been through a terrible war, lived in a cave, been imprisoned, indentured, raped, blackmailed. He has PTSD and is very depressed. When he gets home, he has even lost his place there. Young Jamie is laird of lallybroch, Ian manages the estate and Jenny runs the house.
He is rootless, workless and desperately lonely. So, Jenny sets him up with Laoghaire. He drifts into the marriage because he can't summon the will to go against jenny's plans and upset folk.
Laoghaire, on the other hand, has spent all those years thinking that she was in love with Jamie. Everyone knew she was carrying a torch for him. Once they are married, she very quickly realises that he is still in love with Claire. He cries out for her in bed etc. And Laoghaire very quickly becomes bitter and hateful. She hates sex and makes Jamie feel like there is something very wrong with the way he treats her in bed. She is always crying and having tantrums until he can't bare to stay with her. He couldn't cope with hurting her any more, so he left and went to live in Edinburgh.
No one in the books knew she had tried to have Claire burnt at the stake. It's a very sad storyline, even if it is just a pretty rubbish plot device. It's another bit of conflict/trouble Jamie and Claire have to overcome.

Excellent summary Lessstressed

Fantasticmissfoxy · 24/10/2017 14:28

Lonely, yes I think it is his hairline that makes it worse, the actor himself looks alright on google images. Agree the actress for Bree is ok looks wise (v pretty) but is just tiny, they could have filmed it to make her look bigger even if they didn't want to use a tall actress - it's got shades of mini Tom Cruise playing notoriously towering Jack Reacher.... ah well, fingers crossed this series improves as I've been a bit disappointed with it so far 😟

quirkychick · 24/10/2017 16:26

Sophie Skelton seems to be playing Brianna as quite sweet, which is not really how I saw her at all. DG does write her as a bit irritating and spoilt, but she is supposed to be quite fierce and feisty.

AKAmyself · 24/10/2017 16:50

Don't you all think we are maybe being a bit, ahem, obsessive about things like hairlines and the exact nuancing of sams reaction to the photos of boring Brianna etc?

Because, really, really, we all love it!

LonelyOversharer · 24/10/2017 16:55

Do we think that DG likes any of her characters? If she wrote the first book as a "how to write a novel" type thing, it's no wonder its full of holes. But is there a single one of them that hasn't been battered, raped, abducted, chopped up/almost murdered and generally had a rubbushy time? She really can't be doing with anyone just being happy!

But once she had the money rolling in and high demand for the books, couldn't she just have piffled on with them leading a happy and contented life on Frasers Ridge? We'd all still have bought the bloody books! I don't even mind the lengthy descriptions, just less chopping up, raping and maiming please!

lessstressed thats a super recap. On just reading the books, it's hard to get all that from DG's words. But it makes total sense, again I have to wonder if DG did this deliberately or if just fits together afterwards as it were.

Being hard on DG here, but I'm trying very hard to read book 6, and poor old Claire is in prison for (not) murder, and getting touched up by women, while Jamie is getting packed off on Bonnets ship. Have skipped some bits, am a bit wtf, and I'm not sure I can be arsed to go back and read every word. And I always read every word, so am pissed off that it's beating me!

LonelyOversharer · 24/10/2017 16:59

Yes aka I think I need to just enjoy it for what it is! and swerve that stupid book for a bit

GreatWhites · 24/10/2017 17:17

Book 6 isn't even as bad as 7, which is tripe. I would have loved 10 books of Fraser's Ridge and their escapades.

The book marriage between Jamie and Leoghaire makes much more sense because he doesn't know about the witch trial. Jenny browbeats him into it really and he's not got the mental headspace to fight her off.

I think they might make her totally destitute and play on Jamie being her saviour. Will be interesting.

ToniMumsnet · 24/10/2017 17:23

@LonelyOversharer

So the guy in her room is going into the barrel? Can't for the life of me remember who kills him, is it Claire? I want to dip into Voyager, but that will make me nit pick even more!

I think its Mr Willoughby that shots him. But in the book they were on the stairs. Not sure why he would come across them in the room.

Jamie doesn't find out what Laoghaire did until near the end of book 5 when they ask Ned to find out if she is settled with another man. It really doesn't make any sense that he would consider marrying her knowing what she had done.

AKAmyself · 24/10/2017 17:42

Surely though it makes zero sense that in the book Claire doesn't think to tell Jamie about how Laoghaire's role in the burning thing... so yes the whole plot is ludicrous.

I however never felt so strongly about it and totally agree with Lessstrwssed excellent post. I always interpreted as a symptom of Jamie having given up on love and life; although paradoxically escaping from this sad marriage gives him the kick he needs to rebuild a life in Edinburgh. I hated Claire's jealousy but I love to hate Claire iyswim - as a character I find her more interesting for being flawed and irrational and at times utterly unlikeable. It makes me love her even more in later books.

If anything what I hated the most was DG ruining Jenny for me.

AKAmyself · 24/10/2017 17:42

Sorry my post made little sense. I'm knackered and writing on my phone

Whatthefoxgoingon · 24/10/2017 17:49

People make mistakes. Irrational stupid mistakes. Jenny and Jamie both made a mistake with L’whatsherface.

AKAmyself · 24/10/2017 17:59

Ok so I just finished my second viewing :)

Towards the end of the shagathon Jamie clearly tries to tell Claire about L (after uttering the truly ovary-shattering "... save as a beast, blind with need"). She tells him that all that nonsense can wait and all she wants to know is whether he ever loved anyone else and when can they shag again. So I hope that they play it as it more as Claire being heartbroken and upset than madly jealous and wild with fury

ASauvignonADay · 24/10/2017 18:19

I’ve binged the first 4 episodes today - love half term!

iamdivergent · 24/10/2017 18:37

Thank you so much lessstressed that makes it kind of easier to accept

Lessstressedhemum · 24/10/2017 18:40

Aye, he tried to tell Claire several times but chickened out until that last time when Claire stopped him. He is just so afraid that she will leave him again. He is only starting to rebuild some kind of life for himself, albeit a very dangerous one lived by a man with nothing to lose. When Claire comes back, she brings him hope and a reason to live, he can't bear the thought of losing her again. They are both very selfish at this point I think.
I always thought Claire completely over reacts in the books and backs herself into a corner. She has no idea what Jamie actually went through or how his life has been. She lived with Frank for twenty years and b yet she wants Jamie to have been alone.
I dint think DG likes many of her characters. She definitely doesn't like Roger. Although, to be fair, it was a pretty violent and turbulent time.

AKAmyself · 24/10/2017 19:05

Everything you say Lessstressed. I am confident that the screenwriters will handle the whole situation better than DG, as they have everything else so far.

NecrotisingDisaster · 24/10/2017 19:26

My first time dipping into a thread like this... I wasn't impressed with the episode Sad Maybe there was too much build up with waiting a week but I was underwhelmed. I was actually bored during the final sex scene and just wanted them to get on with the plot! I've never felt that way in an episode before. Hopefully it gets back on track next week.

CourtneyLoveIsMySpiritAnimal · 24/10/2017 19:29

I wasn't impressed with the episode

Expectations were too high, I think. I wasn’t bored with the sex as such but I could’ve done without 20 minutes of them undressing each other.

she definitely doesn't like Roger

The fact that DG obviously loathes Roger makes me love him even more Grin
